Dickens' Interest In The Theatre, Alberta M. Speicher Jan 1938

Dickens' Interest In The Theatre, Alberta M. Speicher

Graduate Thesis Collection

In this study I have not been concerned with Charles Dickens as the man, or humorist, or novelist; but I have confined my investigation to Charles Dickens' interest in the theatre. I shall show how he tried to express his theatrical ambitions by acting, producing, and directing plays though he was really a novelist; and how his entire career was colored by his interest in these various aspects of the theatre.

Chase And Lincoln In The Election Of 1864, Ellis H. Ewing Jan 1938

Chase And Lincoln In The Election Of 1864, Ellis H. Ewing

Graduate Thesis Collection

The election of 1864 is one of importance to students of American history because it was fraught with many dangers to the Union. It might have been otherwise and had it been so the nation most certainly would have seen troublous times. Just how much truth is in the expression of Lincoln's that the country chose him so as not to "swap horses in the middle of the stream" can perhaps be better understood if we have a clearer understanding of the opposition he had in 1864.

A Critical Investigation Of The Textual Variances Of The Book Of Jonah, Grace C. Henry Jan 1938

A Critical Investigation Of The Textual Variances Of The Book Of Jonah, Grace C. Henry

Graduate Thesis Collection

The subject for this thesis was chosen as a result of a deep interest, on the part of the writer, in the languages of the past and present. This interest has been increased while engaged in the study of the Hebrew language in the classes of Dr. T.W.Nakarai of the college of Religion at Butler University. He has made possible a comprehension of the different values and meanings of words as they have passed down through the ages, as well as a realization of the impossibility to express exactly the connoted meanings of words in a language other than that …

The History Of The Christian Churches In Marion County, Indiana, Perry W. Swann

Graduate Thesis Collection

The significance of a written History of The Christian Churches or Churches in Marion County, Indiana has been stated on different occasions by many church members. Dr. F.D. Kershner, Dean of the College of Religion in Butler University, expressed his desire in May 1936 that some student in the College of Religion might write such a history. The importance of the work, and Dr. Kershner's suggestion have prompted me to write this dissertation.

The Chivalric Ideal In The Work Of Sir Walter Scott, Margaret E. Remy Jan 1938

The Chivalric Ideal In The Work Of Sir Walter Scott, Margaret E. Remy

Graduate Thesis Collection

During the school year of 1936-1937 I became intensely interested in the study of the Chivalry as brought out in Dr. Harrison's graduate course on The Arthurian Legend. I was curious to know how Sir Walter Scott, with some of whose novels and poems I was acquainted, had used the chivalric ideal in his work. Out of that curiosity grew the desire to study further the chivalric ideal and its relation to Scott. The result of my study of the past year is the survey following.

Jewish Proselyte Baptism And Its Relation To Christian Baptism, Glen W. Mell Jan 1938

Jewish Proselyte Baptism And Its Relation To Christian Baptism, Glen W. Mell

Graduate Thesis Collection

With a Disciple background, the writer of this thesis has quite naturally been very much interested in the subject of Christian baptism. Any study of the value and meaning of Christian baptism will, of course, lead one back to a consideration of its origin. It seems that one is usually content with the conviction that Jesus instituted baptism and lets it go at that.

An Investigation Of The Various Interpretations Of The Song Of Songs, Gilbert L. Weidman Jan 1938

An Investigation Of The Various Interpretations Of The Song Of Songs, Gilbert L. Weidman

Graduate Thesis Collection

The study of the higher criticism of the Bible has always held great interest to the author of this thesis. This critical approach to an understanding of each book of the Bible has caused many facts, outside of the book itself, to be found. Armed with these facts the book itself becomes clearer and clearer as the purpose and the background of the author becomes more and more apparent.
