An Experimental Theatre Approach To A Mormon Theme Using The Work Of The Open Theatre As Prototype, Dionis C. Spitzer

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to discover those experimental theatre techniques which can best express a Mormon theme: that one must become as a child to enter the kingdom of God. This thesis concludes from the resultant production, An Afternoon's Work, that certain theatrical techniques are powerful tools for the expression of any theme; that the work of the Open Theatre can be used for Mormon ends as long as the actor and director know exactly what they want to say and refine the techniques for that purpose.

The ideology behind experimental theatres such as the Open Theatre …

Causes Of The Mormon Boycott Against Gentile Merchants In 1866 And 1868, Peter Neil Garff

Theses and Dissertations

In the 1850s and 1860s Gentiles monopolized the mercantile profession in Salt Lake valley. Conflict arose between the Mormons and anti-Mormon merchants for essentially five reasons: Mormon Church leaders believed merchants charged exorbitant prices, encouraged the coming of Johnston's army, falsely accused them for the "assassination" of two Salt Lake City Gentiles, supported Gentiles who were "jumping" Mormon land claims, and supported an adamantly anti-Mormon newspaper. Church leaders maintained that the motive behind these actions was essentially the destruction of their church; therefore, they levied a boycott against the anti-Mormon merchants in 1866.

Because Church leaders felt the coming of …

A History Of Utah's Territorial Capitol Building At Fillmore, 1851-1969, Richard W. Payne

Theses and Dissertations

The history of Utah's Territorial Capitol Building at Fillmore began in 1851 when Brigham Young desired a central location for the capital of the newly created Territory. Only one wing of the four wing plan was completed, because misunderstandings had arisen between Mormon and Federal officials that prevented further finances from being sent to Utah, and only one complete session of the Legislature met at Fillmore, in December 1855. Two one-day sessions were held there in December 1856 and December 1858. The 1856 session adjourned to Salt Lake until the Federal Government would send funds for the completion of the …

Critical Analysis Of Certain Apocryphal Reports In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints As Related By Members Of The Church, Don L. Penrod Jan 1971

Critical Analysis Of Certain Apocryphal Reports In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints As Related By Members Of The Church, Don L. Penrod

Theses and Dissertations

From time to time some members of the Church knowingly or ignorantly circulate fallacious stories, rumors, or unsubstantiated reports of a sensational nature, which become more injurious than constructive. Also problems arise when the record of a person's spiritual experiences is published about by others. Often such material becomes garbled as it is passed from person to person.

This study investigates some of these rumors and stories in an attempt to discern if there is any truth in them and to present statements of General Authorities as to the position the Church takes, if any, concerning the stories embraced in …
