In 1847, Philip De La Mare's father contracted to build the Albert Pier on Jersey Island. Philip was associated with his father on the contract. A Comparative Study And Evaluation Of The Latter-Day Saint And "Fundamentalist" Views Pertaining To The Practice Of Plural Marriage, Dean C. Jessee
A Comparative Study And Evaluation Of The Latter-Day Saint And "Fundamentalist" Views Pertaining To The Practice Of Plural Marriage, Dean C. Jessee
Theses and Dissertations
Since the issuance of the Manifesto by President Wilford Woodruff on September 25, 1890, discontinuing the practice of plural marriage by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, intensive efforts have been made by dissenters to show that authority to practice polygamy has secretly continued to the present day. Claiming that the Church departed from its original teachings when it discontinued the practice of plural marriage and that the Manifesto was adopted merely as an act of appeasement, "fundamentalists" have attempted to show that the doctrine of plural marriage was revealed to the Latter-day Saints as an irrevocable decree, …
Mormon Indian Missions - 1855, Wesley R. Law
Mormon Indian Missions - 1855, Wesley R. Law
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the L.D.S. philosophy concerning the origin and destiny of the American Indians, Brigham Young felt the gospel should be taught to the various Indian tribes. Thus, at the spring semi-annual conference of the Church in 1855, a number of men were called as missionaries and assigned to establish five Indian missions. Four of these, Elk Mountain, Las Vegas, White Mountain, and Salmon River, were in or near the Utah-Idaho region and the fifth was in the Indian Territory.
A History Of Murray To 1905, Clinton R. Ahlberg
A History Of Murray To 1905, Clinton R. Ahlberg
Theses and Dissertations
The valley and region in which Murray is located was well known to the trappers and exploreres before the Mormon Pioneers entered the area. The Escalante expedition visited the general area as early as September of 1776, and left a description of Utah Valley and its inhabitants. While in the Utah Valley, the Indians gave the Spaniards information about the valley to the north and the lake there.
Come fifty years later, the region became well known to the fur trappers of the great fur companies. Peter Skene Ogden, Jedediah Smith, and Provost with their companies of men traversed the …
Factors Associated With Attendance At Church Related Activities Of Lds Male Household Heads In Selected Utah Rural Areas, C. Leroy Anderson
Factors Associated With Attendance At Church Related Activities Of Lds Male Household Heads In Selected Utah Rural Areas, C. Leroy Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
This study has two main purposes. First, to develop from theory hypotheses concerning the association between attendance of L.D.S., male household heads at church related activities and certain specific variables; and to test these hypotheses. The second purpose was to test certain other variables, (not related to theory) for association with church attendance of L.D.S., male household heads.
The chi-square test was used to determine whether or not the variables were significantly associated and the coefficient of contingency test to determine to what extent they were related. The .05 level of probability was chosen as the criterion for significance.

A History Of Iosepa, The Utah Polynesian Colony, Dennis H. Atkin
A History Of Iosepa, The Utah Polynesian Colony, Dennis H. Atkin
Theses and Dissertations
The first missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints went to Hawaii in 1850. As native converts joined the Church, many desired to gather in Utah with converts from other parts of the world, in order to perform Church ordinances in the temples located there. Until about 1870, Hawaiians were prohibited by their government from leaving the Islands permanently. As the laws were relaxed they came to Utah a few at a time with returning missionaries until by 1889 about seventy-five were living in Salt Lake City.
Cultural and social problems arose causing the Church officials to …

Representative examples of Mormon art were examined to determine their primary purposes and themes. Each work considered was classified according to the following primary categories developed in a preliminary survey: (1) History Glorification, (2) Depiction of Moral Models, (3) Scriptural Teaching, and (4) Aesthetic Purpose.

A Historical Study Of The Congressional Career, John T. Caine, Judith Ann Roderick

Brigham Young's Philosophy Of History, H. Carleton Marlow
Brigham Young's Philosophy Of History, H. Carleton Marlow
Theses and Dissertations
"Brigham Young's Philosophy of History" attempts to describe how Brigham Young gave order and unity to the hubbub and confusion in which man lived. The laws which gave form and pattern to the baffling, diverse phenomena of and around man receive major attention. This thesis is an expository type of writing rather than an evaluation of Brigham Young's ideas and principles or laws in reference to other philosophies of history, Latter-day Saint theology, the modern natural exact sciences, or in reference to the current views of his times. This thesis is limited to a digestion of Brigham Young's works in …

Similarities And Differences In The Anabaptist Restitution And The Mormon Restoration, Robert J. Mccue
