A recollection of Bridgewater State College Coach Edward Swenson’s efforts to bring varsity-level football back into a Massachusetts state college and the stories of the trials and tribulations of his first eight years as head coach. The book is a Bridgewater State University Football Alumni project inspired by many of Coach Swenson’s former players, commemorating the coach and several of their former teammates.

Nicholas Tillinghast (1804-1856) was the founding principal of the State Normal School at Bridgewater, Massachusetts. While his accomplishments as an educator and administrator are well-known, his earlier U.S. Army career is less-well documented. This article examines both Tillinghast’s experiences at West Point as a student and instructor and his career as an Army officer serving at Fort Gibson in the Indian Territory.

Thomas J. “Ozzie” Conners enlisted in the U.S. Army after his graduation from Bridgewater State College in 1965. After basic training, Conners joined the 196th Light Infantry Brigade and was transported to Vietnam. As a member of Company C, 27th Regiment (the Wolfhounds), Conners was wounded within a month of his deployment, during the Operation Attleboro campaign.

The pamphlet records the memorial service held for Isabella Whitten Clarke Boyden (1825-1895) at the June 24, 1896 meeting of the Bridgewater Normal Association. A native of Maine, Isabella Whitten Clarke was a member of the 26th class to enter the Bridgewater Normal School in August 1848. After graduating she taught in Rhode Island and Massachusetts until her marriage to classmate Albert G. Boyden in 1851. Boyden, who was then teaching at his alma mater, would soon become its longest-serving principal.
