Honors Program Theses and Projects

Clara Schumann's Piano Sonata In G Minor: A Preview Of Things To Come, Jiaying Zhu
Clara Schumann's Piano Sonata In G Minor: A Preview Of Things To Come, Jiaying Zhu
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The purpose of this study is to examine, analyze, and perform a recently published edition of a nearly forgotten piece, the Piano Sonata in G minor, by Clara Schumann. This is her first attempt at writing in this form. The piece is in a larger form and of a much longer length, which makes it unique among her works. Since it is unique and little has been written about the piece, it offers a wealth of opportunities to the researcher. The study includes a complete formal and structural analysis of the sonata, as well as a comparison of this sonata …
Melodic Metaphors For Dreams In Three Classic Songs From The Disney Catalog, James Bohn
Melodic Metaphors For Dreams In Three Classic Songs From The Disney Catalog, James Bohn
Bridgewater Review
Three of the most-valued songs from the Disney catalog are “Some Day My Prince Will Come,” “When You Wish Upon a Star,” and “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes.” All three songs come from animated feature films created during Walt Disney’s lifetime (1901-1966). Furthermore, all three invoke the idea of dreams or wishing. The melodies of these songs feature delayed resolution or a lack of resolution. Such approaches to resolution are symbolic of the intrinsically unresolved nature of dreams.

Effects Of An Interdisciplinary Method For Training Conductors, Donald J. Running

This study investigated effects of a method designed to enhance novice conductors’ musical expressiveness, specificity, and comfort through incorporation of acting exercises. Participants (N = 33) were divided into an experimental group receiving instruction in physical acting exercises and a control group receiving traditional conducting instruction. Pretest/posttest questionnaires and pretest/posttest video excerpts assessed by a panel of experts were employed to assess changes in participants’ abilities and attitudes. Results indicate that both the experimental method and traditional method have positive effects on the ability of the conductors to utilize and perform expressive conducting gestures (p < .01). No significant interactions were found between the control and experimental groups; both experimental and traditional methods seemed to allow for student growth equally.
Creativity Research In Music Education: A Review (1980-2005), Donald J. Running
Creativity Research In Music Education: A Review (1980-2005), Donald J. Running
Music Faculty Publications
This article lays a foundational groundwork of what is currently known regarding creativity and music education to encourage future research. It explores principal research avenues within various scholarly journals related to creativity and music education, including definitions of creativity, empirical measures of creativity, and effects of music instruction on general creativity scores. Definitions (and, consequently, assessments) of creativity fall into three general categories: product based, process based, and performance based. These definitions have generated a number of new theories and tests designed to assess the creativity of products and individuals.

Cultural Commentary: Real Music About Things That Matter - The Survival Of Folk, Gil Bliss
Bridgewater Review
Following a decade-long slump, folk music is enjoying a return to popularity. The term “folk” should refer to music made by common people, not to the media definition of folk music that elicits visions of hay bales, hootenannies and country hicks. Although many younger music aficionados may not understand this, there once was a time when American musical tastes were not dictated by MTV, force-fed radio programming at even the money-hungry corporate record business. Musicians were able to entertain the public even if they had not made videos. Before electric guitars, Walkman units, microphones, stereo television, or even electricity, people …

Cultural Commentary: Louis Moreau Gottschalk - America's Dashing Musical Ambassador, Henry Santos
Bridgewater Review
Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869), the first American pianist and composer to achieve international fame, can truly be described as a musical ambassador. He toured France, Switzerland, Spain, the U.S., Canada, the West Indies and South America. But ironically, although Gottschalk’s compositions and piano virtuosity made a great impact abroad, his work received an unenthusiastic and in some cases hostile reception from the musical establishment in his native country.
