Seventh-Day Adventists And Original Sin: A Study Of The Early Development Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Understanding Of The Effect Of Adam's Sin On His Posterity, Edwin Harry Zackrison

Dissertations

Problem. In Seventh-day Adventist theology, the doctrine of original sin has received ambivalent treatment. Periodically voices within the church and outside of it have asserted that the doctrine has no part in SDA theology, yet other Christians have insisted that it is a Scriptural doctrine. It was the purpose of the present study to examine the theological roots of Adventism to determine the reasons for and the content of its treatment of the doctrine.

Method. Since Biblical and historical perspectives are indispensable to the critical process of theology, a brief developmental survey was done to reveal trends and models relevant …

An Interpersonal Relationship Workshop Designed For Seventh-Day Adventist Congregational Use, David Emery Greenlaw Jan 1984

An Interpersonal Relationship Workshop Designed For Seventh-Day Adventist Congregational Use, David Emery Greenlaw

Professional Dissertations DMin

The Seventh-day Adventist church has entered the field of human relations to help members within its communities function more harmoniously. As problem areas have arisen the church has endeavored to meet them. Somehow, the area of interpersonal relations has not been broached on the congregational level. Due to this lack of involvement materials have not been readily available. These are essential so that fellowship and growth might be constant.

To develop materials for presentation in a workshop for congregational use, five areas were explored:

1. Self-worth. This subject is examined from a biblical perspective. Self-worth effects our ability to interact …

An Evaluation Of Current Procedures Of Local Conference Constituency Sessions With Recommendations For Possible Improvement, Jere D. Patzer

Professional Dissertations DMin

Problem

There is a growing dissatisfaction being openly expressed toward the current procedures pertaining to constituency sessions. The perception o f many constituents is that these meetings are held for the purpose of "rubber stamping" what has already been decided.

Method

In cooperation with my major professor and the Andrews University In s titu te o f Church Ministry, I decided that an evaluation instrument in the form of a survey would be sent to a sample of the delegates present at the 1980 Upper Columbia and Idaho conferences and the 1983 Upper Columbia conference constituency sessions. Towards A Theology Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Meeting Place, With A Study Of Practical Implications And Applications Thereof, Eduardo Zurita Jan 1984

Towards A Theology Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Meeting Place, With A Study Of Practical Implications And Applications Thereof, Eduardo Zurita

Professional Dissertations DMin

From the beginning mankind has selected places for adoration in which to worship the Creator. There is little information as to the kinds of facilities used by true worshipers of God in Old Testament times, until the wilderness sanctuary was built. On the other hand there is no indication in the Scriptures that the sanctuary and, later, Solomon's temple were established as model places of worship for future generations. The New Testament mentions three major kinds of places of worship: the temple, the synagogue, and the house church.

This study discusses the characteristics of places of worship during selected periods …

Role Conflict And Role Ambiguity Applicable To The Local Pastor In The North Pacific Union Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Michael G. Mcbride Jan 1984

Role Conflict And Role Ambiguity Applicable To The Local Pastor In The North Pacific Union Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Michael G. Mcbride

Professional Dissertations DMin

In recent years much has been written in non-Adventist and non-clergy literature concerning role conflict and role ambiguity. Adventist perceptions of role and the importance Adventists attribute to such roles in ministry may differ from the perceptions of non- Adventist clergy and writers. Hence, a specific study of Adventist clergy was necessary to determine if such a problem exists in Adventism and if the conclusions of other studies are applicable in an Adventist context.

It was proposed that an evaluation of the current status of Adventist clergy in the North Pacific Union Conference (NPUC) regarding role function and performance would …

Developing And Implementing A Program Of Instruction For Church Administrators And Ministers Of The Antillian Union Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists To Enlarge Their Understanding Of The Doctrine Of Spiritual Gifts As It Relates To Their Roles And Functions, C. Dionisio Christian Jan 1984

Dionisio Christian

Professional Dissertations DMin

Problem

Due to the lack of opportunity of administrators and ministers of the Antillian Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists to take full advantage of the materials that can be found in the English language on the doctrine of spiritual gifts, there is not a clear understanding of spiritual gifts among the majority of the church administrators and ministers. There is a need for them to understand how spiritual gifts relate to their roles and functions.

Method

The steps utilized in the project were: (1) a theological presentation of the doctrine of spiritual gifts; (2) studies presented by means of sermons, …

Toward The Development Of A Conscious Spirit Dependence In The Decision-Making Processes Of The Church, Stephen Gene Chinn Jan 1984

Toward The Development Of A Conscious Spirit Dependence In The Decision-Making Processes Of The Church, Stephen Gene Chinn

Professional Dissertations DMin

The church is a divinely called, divinely directed, and divinely destined institution. Yet the church is composed of human beings who are accustomed to human institutions. These humans tend to lead the church as any other institution, unless reminded frequently of the divine aspects of the church. To emphasize these divine aspects involves focusing attention on the Holy Spirit. The Spirit links Christ, the Head, with the church body. Certain factors facilitate the Spirit's ability to communicate the desires of the Head to the church body. Foremost among these is a conscious dependence of human decision makers upon the Spirit …

Despite his considerable contribution to Adventist education, there has been no comprehensive investigation of his life.

Method. This study has investigated Grigg's life from the perspective of his work as an educational administrator. A historical-documentary method of research has been used. Major sources have been collections of official correspondence; minutes of committees, boards, and faculties; …

Religious Value Transmission Among Seventh-Day Adventist White American Families : A Cognitive Approach To Parental Values And Relationship As Perceived By Youth, Claude M. Villeneuve

Dissertations

Three research questions were examined: (1) What role does cognitive-attribution play in religious value transmission? (2) Is there a generation gap in the religious values of Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) families? (3) What is the influence of parental support on value transmission?

The Religious Value Transmission Study (RVTS) questionnaire was developed. The internal reliabilities of the fundamental belief, attitude, and behavior scales was, for each scale, above .80. A factor analysis with a rotation of factors confirmed the construct validity of the scales. A nation-wide random selection of SDA college freshmen and sophomores, and their parents returned 1089 questionnaires representing an …

Liturgy And Ritual As Religious Education: Implications For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, James Bingham Jan 1984

Liturgy And Ritual As Religious Education: Implications For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, James Bingham

Dissertations

Problem. The act of worship has not been the central focus of the Seventh-day Adventist church. An evangelistic priority has reduced its worship periods to mostly didactic acts, often leaving believers unsatisfied in their desires to worship. Structural deficiencies are evident in the neglect of liturgical and ritualistic matters. The problem is compounded in that the educative forces inherent in liturgical, ritualistic expressions are not well understood.

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to analyze the nature of liturgy and ritual in order to better understand their contribution and potential as religious education and their impact upon worship. It …

Relationship Between Four Temperament Types And Nineteen Spiritual Gifts, Roland L. Joachim Jan 1984

Relationship Between Four Temperament Types And Nineteen Spiritual Gifts, Roland L. Joachim

Dissertations

Problem. No studies have been found that examine empirically the possible relationship between temperament and spiritual gifts. Traditionally they have been seen as offspring of discrete disciplines, the former belonging to the realm of psychology and the latter to theology. When some writers recently hypothesized a possible correlation between temperament and spiritual gifts, others discredited the notion.

This study was undertaken to investigate the possible correlation between the traditional four temperament types and a selection of nineteen spiritual gifts of the New Testament.

Method. The data base for this study consisted of 1,067 Christian graduate students and church members from …

A Comparative Study Of The Psychological Profiles Of A Selective Sample Of Incarcerated Females Versus Non-Incarcerated Females, Karen Ladd

Dissertations

Problem. Psychological testing is used in penal institutions at the initial time of incarceration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of developing distinct psychological profiles for incarcerated females.

Method. The psychological assessment instrument employed to develop these profiles is the Sixteen Factor Personality Questionnaire (16PF). The data which were computed and analyzed to test the eight null hypotheses were provided by a selective sample group of 622 subjects in two penal institutions in Indiana.

Findings. (1) There is no significant difference between personality profiles of incarcerated white females who are property offenders and personality profiles of …

Indonesia Union College : A Historical Study Of A Seventh-Day Adventist Institution, Rajoaman Nainggolan Jan 1984

Indonesia Union College : A Historical Study Of A Seventh-Day Adventist Institution, Rajoaman Nainggolan

Dissertations

Problem

The first Seventh-day Adventist training school established in Indonesia was the Netherlands East Indies Training School (Indonesia Union College after 1962) founded in 1929. The school has since grown considerably and achieved university status, but no comprehensive history of it has been written. This lack points to a need for a systematic examination of the development of Seventh-day Adventist higher education in Indonesia. This study reconstructs the history of this institution from 1929 to 1970.

Method

The documentary-historical method, based on published and unpublished materials, was used. Materials included books, periodicals, school bulletins, minutes of the Indonesia Union Mission, …

An Empirical Study Of The Relationship Between Religious Orthodoxy (Defined As Religious Rigidity And Religious Closed-Mindedness) And Marital Sexual Functioning, Stephen Lennard Purcell Jan 1984

An Empirical Study Of The Relationship Between Religious Orthodoxy (Defined As Religious Rigidity And Religious Closed-Mindedness) And Marital Sexual Functioning, Stephen Lennard Purcell

Dissertations

Problem

This study attempted to explore whether or not a significant relationship exists between religious orthodoxy (defined as religious rigidity and religious closed-mindedness) and marital sexual functioning.

Methodology

Two Likert-type scales were developed to measure religious orthodoxy and marital sexual functioning, respectively, in a sample of 217 subjects representing Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish faiths. The relationship between the eleven indices of marital sexual functioning (overall marital sexual functioning, sexual interest, responsivity, foreplay, frequency, pleasure, inhibition, anxiety, guilt, shame, and disgust) and religious regidity, religious closed-mindedness, and four moderator variables (sex, age, education, and duration of marriage of subjects) were investigated …

Development Of West Indies College, 1907-1960: A Historical Study, Anthon C. Francis Jan 1984

Development Of West Indies College, 1907-1960: A Historical Study, Anthon C. Francis

Dissertations

Problem

There is no written history of West Indies College (WIC). What little is cited in periodicals, magazines, Palm Leaves, and other sources about this institution is insignificant, incomplete, and sometimes incorrect. For over half a century, WIC has been preparing workers for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Until 1984, however, no comprehensive history was written on the development of this important institution of higher learning.

Method

The documentary-historical method was employed in this research. Books, periodicals, school bulletins, unpublished manuscripts, board minutes, school reports and agendas, school calendars, private files, correspondence, and other relevant documents as well as oral interviews …

Aspects Of The Remnant Concept In The Gospel Of Matthew, Edgar A. Johnson Jan 1984

Aspects Of The Remnant Concept In The Gospel Of Matthew, Edgar A. Johnson

Dissertations

Only some aspects of the remnant concept in the christology and ecclesiology of Matthew are dealt with in this dissertation. Special attention is given to the evangelist's distinctive interpretation of Jesus as the remnant and the conceptual structures (e.g., μαθητἠς, ὲκκλησἰα, μικροἰ, πτωχοἰ, ὲκλεκτοἰ, ὸλἰγοι, and others) that cohere with the remnant concept.

A brief survey of the recent debate on the ecclesiology of Matthew and a statement on the purpose, scope, method, and plan of the dissertation are set forth in the Introduction. The need for a careful analysis which would necessitate a much more inclusive review of the …
