Developing A Serious Game To Explore Joint All Domain Command And Control, Nathaniel W. Flack
Developing A Serious Game To Explore Joint All Domain Command And Control, Nathaniel W. Flack
Theses and Dissertations
Changes in the geopolitical landscape and increasing technological complexity have prompted the U.S. Military to coin Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) and Joint All-Domain Command and Control as terms to describe an over-arching strategy that frames the complexity of warfare across both traditional and emerging warfighting domains. Teaching new and advanced concepts associated with these terms requires both innovation as well as distinct education and training tools in order to realize the cultural change advocated by senior military leaders. BSN, a Collectible Card Game, was developed to teach concepts integral to MDO and initiate discussion on military strategy.
Introducing The Game Design Matrix: A Step-By-Step Process For Creating Serious Games, Aaron J. Pendleton
Introducing The Game Design Matrix: A Step-By-Step Process For Creating Serious Games, Aaron J. Pendleton
Theses and Dissertations
The Game Design Matrix makes effective game design accessible to novice game designers. Serious Games are a powerful tool for educators seeking to boost the level of student engagement and application in academic environments, but the can be difficult to incorporate into existing courses due to availability and the cost of quality game design. The Game Design Matrix was used by two educators, novice game designers, to create a serious game. The games were assessed in an academic setting and observed to be effective in engagement, interaction, and achieving higher levels of learning.
Matrix Determination Of Reflectivity Of Hidden Object Via Indirect Photography, Simon S. Ferrel
Matrix Determination Of Reflectivity Of Hidden Object Via Indirect Photography, Simon S. Ferrel
Theses and Dissertations
Indirect photography is a recently demonstrated technique which expands on the principles of dual photography and allows for the imaging of hidden objects. A camera and light source are collocated with neither having line-of-sight access to the hidden object. Light from the source, a laser, is reflected off a visible non-specular surface onto the hidden object, where it is reflected back to the initial non-specular surface and collected by the camera. This process may be repeated numerous times for various laser spot positions to yield slightly different camera images due to a variation in the illumination of the object. These …
Statistical Machine Translation Of Japanese, Erik A. Chapla
Statistical Machine Translation Of Japanese, Erik A. Chapla
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to find ways to improve the performance of a statistical machine translation system that translates text from Japanese to English. Methods included altering the training and test data by adding a prior linguistic knowledge, altering sentence structures, and looking for better ways to statistically alter the way words align between the two languages. In addition, methods for properly segmenting words in Japanese text through statistical methods were examined. Finally, experiments were conducted on Japanese speech to produce the best text transcription of the speech. The best statistical machine translation methods implemented resulted in improvements …
Multilingual Phoneme Models For Rapid Speech Processing System Development, Eric G. Hansen
Multilingual Phoneme Models For Rapid Speech Processing System Development, Eric G. Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
Current speech recognition systems tend to be developed only for commercially viable languages. The resources needed for a typical speech recognition system include hundreds of hours of transcribed speech for acoustic models and 10 to 100 million words of text for language models; both of these requirements can be costly in time and money. The goal of this research is to facilitate rapid development of speech systems to new languages by using multilingual phoneme models to alleviate requirements for large amounts of transcribed speech. The Global Phone database, winch contains transcribed speech from 15 languages, is used as source data …
Speech Recognition Using The Mellin Transform, Jesse R. Hornback
Speech Recognition Using The Mellin Transform, Jesse R. Hornback
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to improve performance in speech recognition. Specifically, a new approach was investigating by applying an integral transform known as the Mellin transform (MT) on the output of an auditory model to improve the recognition rate of phonemes through the scale-invariance property of the Mellin transform. Scale-invariance means that as a time-domain signal is subjected to dilations, the distribution of the signal in the MT domain remains unaffected. An auditory model was used to transform speech waveforms into images representing how the brain "sees" a sound. The MT was applied and features were extracted. The …
Visitor Evaluation: An Exploratory Study For The Usaf Museum, William J. Wosilius
Visitor Evaluation: An Exploratory Study For The Usaf Museum, William J. Wosilius
Theses and Dissertations
Research was conducted to determine a viable museum visitor evaluation method for use at the USAF Museum, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. A 44 item questionnaire was developed, tested, and administered to 288 visitors to measure attitudes and collect information regarding the USAF Museum visitor base. Constructs in the questionnaire included: motivation for visiting, evaluation of the museum experience, transportation issues, general awareness of museum services, and demographic information. Analysis of the data indicated that enthusiasm for aviation and aviation history were the primary motivating factors and that advertising had little or no effect on visitation. In addition, the USAF Museum was …
The Logistics Of Mobilizing And Supplying The Union Army During The Initial Stages Of The American Civil War, Trey G. Burrows
The Logistics Of Mobilizing And Supplying The Union Army During The Initial Stages Of The American Civil War, Trey G. Burrows
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis studies the logistics involved in mobilizing and supplying the Union Army at the onset of the Civil War. The main elements discussed are the sources, procedures, and items needed for the mobilization and supply efforts. Initially, the Union relied on the States to mobilize the military with the majority of the military being militia members or volunteers. The number of volunteers declined later in the war and the Union used both the bounty system and the draft for recruitment. Eventually, the Federal Government replaced the States as the primary mobilizing entity. The military needed supplies of weapons, clothing, …
An Analysis Of Tactical Military Airlift, James H. Donoho
An Analysis Of Tactical Military Airlift, James H. Donoho
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines tactical military airlift operations conducted during three historical battles - Stalingrad, Dien Bien Phu, and Khe Sanh. Aspects of tactical military airlift operations are identified from these scenarios. The list of important issues that results can be considered when employing tactical military airlift in the future. Using inductive reasoning, tactical military airlift operations in each scenario, and their success or failure, are examined to develop a pattern for recognizing and describing similar situations in the future. Experiences at Stalingrad, Dien Bien Phu, and Khe Sanh indicated that there are nine elements that should be considered when employing …

Military Assistance Policies During The Eisenhower Administration, Robert J. Schutt
Military Assistance Policies During The Eisenhower Administration, Robert J. Schutt
Theses and Dissertations
When World War II ended, the U.S. was left as one of the remaining superpowers. Although the Soviets were also very strong militarily, the U.S. found itself as the one nation with the most stable political and economic conditions, as well as being one of the two remaining military superpowers. With the U.S. home soil untouched by war, the economic and manufacturing infrastructures of the U.S. were stronger than ever. This situation set the stage for the start of U.S. assistance programs. In the late 194Os and throughout the Eisenhower Administration, world events shaped the U.S. military aid policies for …
