The Healing Power Of Creative Storytelling: Utilizing Fiction As A Means Of Therapy In The Writer/Reader Relationship, Alicia Rose Klepper
The Healing Power Of Creative Storytelling: Utilizing Fiction As A Means Of Therapy In The Writer/Reader Relationship, Alicia Rose Klepper
Masters Theses
What if we wrote the challenging portions of our lives as comedies or the boring parts as grand adventures? What if we recast painful experiences into creative stories that allow us to live in proximity to our circumstances and not be overwhelmed? Storytelling is how we bridge our lives with creativity as a way to heal from the past, process the present, and hope for the future. This thesis explores how the tradition of creative storytelling has evolved to enable writers and readers to uncover and connect elements of life that would otherwise be too painful to process. By bridging …

Literacy Identity And Motherhood: Implications Of Hermans' Dialogical Self Theory, Chelsea J. Ames
Literacy Identity And Motherhood: Implications Of Hermans' Dialogical Self Theory, Chelsea J. Ames
Theses and Dissertations
This multiple case study shows how motherhood works with and against two women's literacy identities, as interpreted through the theoretical lens of Herman's Dialogical Self Theory. The evidence of this is shown in the tension between their roles as mothers and their personal roles as readers and writers. In many ways, taking on a reader or writer role meant to deny other roles for these women, showing the clash between efforts to consolidate multiple I-positions. While their meta-positions helped them recognize the discrepancies in their I-positions, there was little evidence of mediating third positions to negotiate their roles. This descriptive …

One Writer, Two Genres: Composing And Analyzing Creative Nonfiction And Fantasy, Kara Herrera
One Writer, Two Genres: Composing And Analyzing Creative Nonfiction And Fantasy, Kara Herrera
Honors Theses
Creative writers face a wide range of options when they sit down to craft art out of words. Available to them are many genres, each with their own characteristics or traits. Additionally, many writers have accomplished self-reflection in interviews, Q&A sessions, and in print. It is not unusual to find writers taking their craft and turning it into their subject matter. This project aims for the same. In order to analyze the similarities and differences in the writing process across genres, a “writing about writing” essay is included along with four creative nonfiction essays and a young adult fantasy novel …

Law And Authors: A Legal Handbook For Writers (Introduction), Jacqueline D. Lipton
Law And Authors: A Legal Handbook For Writers (Introduction), Jacqueline D. Lipton
Book Chapters
Drawing on a wealth of experience in legal scholarship and publishing, Professor Jacqueline D. Lipton provides a useful legal guide for writers whatever their levels of expertise or categories of work (fiction, nonfiction, academic, journalism, freelance content development). This introductory chapter outlines the key legal and business issues authors are likely to face during the course of their careers, and emphasizes that most legal problems have solutions so law should never be an excuse to avoid writing something that an author feels strongly about creating. The larger work draws from case studies and hypothetical examples to address issues of copyright …

My Amiable Uncle: Recollections About Booth Tarkington, Susanah University Mayberry
Purdue University Press Books
He was twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize in fiction: in 1919 for The Magnificent Ambersons and in 1922 for Alice Adams. His play, Clarence, launched Alfred Lunt on his distinguished career and provided Helen Hays with an early successful role. His Penrod books continued the American boy story tradition that started with the works of Mark Twain. In the early 1900s, through his novel The Turmoil, he warned of sacrificing the environment to industrial growth. Yet, since his death in 1946, Booth Tarkington—this writer from the Midwest who accomplished so much—has faded from the memory of …

What's In A Genre?: The Relationship Between Reader And Text, Anabelle Mahoney
What's In A Genre?: The Relationship Between Reader And Text, Anabelle Mahoney
Senior Honors Projects
The way in which literary genres are understood shapes how one reads and interacts with different texts. Genre expectations affect both how individuals choose texts to read, and then how those texts are understood. Therefore, labeling literature as a certain genre affects the relationship between writer and reader. Literary nonfiction is unlike most genres as it promises a certain truth to its readers. One cannot deviate too far from “the truth” in nonfiction writing and still fulfill the genre; the relationship a reader has with a text changes if it is not considered “true enough.” Author James Frey, who marketed …

Professionalism In The Writing Center: Combining Compassion And Composition, Carrigan Price
Tutor's Column
Much is demanded from peer tutors if they are to be perceived as professionals; they must be a listening ear, a helping hand, and an expert writer in order to effectively help students. However, tutors’ behavior must adapt to each individual student, paper, and session. Truly professional tutors ignore traditional definitions of professionalism in favor of providing students the help and advice they most need. Tutors need to pay attention to students’ initial behavior, students’ body language throughout the session, and their own feelings of comfort or discomfort in order to appropriately react to the private and personal content of …

Review: Between Rhyme And Reason: Vladimir Nabokov, Translation, And Dialogue, Brendan Nieubuurt
Review: Between Rhyme And Reason: Vladimir Nabokov, Translation, And Dialogue, Brendan Nieubuurt
Russian Language Journal
An ambitious study, Between Rhyme and Reason endeavors to synthesize two lines of inquiry concerning Nabokov’s long and prodigious career as translator. First, how can we best characterize Nabokov’s method of translation, especially since most of his translations do not follow the same “literalist” approach with which the author and his notorious Eugene Onegin (1964) are so closely associated? Second, how did the act of translating other writers contribute to Nabokov’s own creative work? Stanislav Shvabrin locates the nexus of these concerns in Bakhtin’s concept of dialogism. Against the performative author’s posturing as an absolutely independent creative consciousness free of …
The Curious Case Of Dr. Writer And Mr. Verbalizer, Libbey Hanson
The Curious Case Of Dr. Writer And Mr. Verbalizer, Libbey Hanson
Tutor's Column
The writer and verbalizer can cause major communication issues within a piece of writing. At the writing center, many students don’t mean what they write; they mean what they verbally say. The writer tries to sound smart while the verbalizer tries to make sense. Many times, students will say “But I know what I want to say!” However, they simply cannot write it down. Communication between the writer and the verbalizer fails because of the attempt to sound smart, and the fear of the written word and its permanence. Freshmen struggle in learning an essay format different than what they …
The Creative, The Critic, & The Tutor: Tutoring The Creative Process, Nate Hardy
The Creative, The Critic, & The Tutor: Tutoring The Creative Process, Nate Hardy
Tutor's Column
The creative writing session presents tutors with the unique opportunity to become an integrated part of the writer’s creative process, a system balanced between both the writer’s creative and critical voice. The former spontaneously invents material while the latter crafts it into a final product. While the creative session can be daunting for general tutors as it requires stepping away from the familiarity of the traditional academic setting, embracing the uncertainty of the session allows the tutor to play imperative roles as a student of the writer, audience to their work, and creative voice for their creative process.

Conte Romanesque, Chant-Roman: Postures De La Figure Auctoriale Chez Maurice Bandaman Et Werewere Liking, Adama Coulibaly
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
What is the connection between the author figure and the genre? Contrary to a widespread idea, the generic mention is not a petrified venue. Indeed, from the mention of "song-novel" in Elle sera de jaspe et de corail and La mémoire amputée by Werewere Liking to that of "novelistic tale" in Le fi/s de-la-femme-male or that of the "novel" in L'État Z'héros by Maurice Bandaman, this study shows that, by a play of permanent negotiation of the limits of their fictional status, the writer and the storyteller, figures of the author, produce hybrid genres. The practice summons a kind …

La Leçon De Ouologuem Ou Le Portrait De L'Artiste En « Pisse-Copie, Nègre D'Écrivains Célèbres », Désiré Nyela
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The transformation of the African griot/storyteller into a writer was built on the sacredness of his mission, animated by the flame of engagement, inspired by blackness. However, the irruption of Ouologuem into the literary scene brought about a Copernican revolution of sorts by paving the way for a parodic reversal in the conception of the writer. Indeed, Ouologuem's knowledge of the asperities of the literary system surrounding the African novelist leads him to deconstruct the sacred character of the writer's figure; a desecration that places the figure of the writer and the fictional characters of his novel on the same …

Métamorphoses De L'Écrivain Dans Le Roman Francophone Subsaharien, Christian Uwe
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
In his very first novel - La vie et demie - the question was put forward: wherefrom shall Sony Labou Tansi write so as to be? With a stunning lucidity, the author observed the irreducible gap that separates him from (and yet links him to) his writing: "I who speak of the absurdity of the absurd [ ... ] wherefrom do you think I speak if not from the outside?" (1979: 9). Starting from that novel, this paper explores the way the figure of the author is revealed by the writing. To that end, it explores five takes on such …

The Writer: An Endangered Species, Hayley Dykman
Tutor's Column
The ability to write is a necessity in every stage of education and the career field beyond; however, few people are willing to label themselves as “writers.” It is especially important that students adopt the mindset that they are “writers” because writing is something they are required to do frequently. Believing you are a “writer” makes writing seem easier and a more innate part of your abilities. However, students often have an incorrect idea of what it means to be a “writer,” thinking that to be a “writer” is to be a published author or someone who always enjoys the …

Figure De L'Écrivain Chez Sami Tchak. Déterminisrne, Fantasme Et Mythe, Vincent Simédoh
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
This article examines how the figure of the writer manifests himself in the postcolonial novel and the issues associated with all determinisms. Does a representation of oneself in a fictional space give one the possibility of being other than that which one is or is destined to be? Clearly a literary question, in the sense that it makes possibilities exist that are yet unavailable, it comes with few answers. It calls for further investigation to highlight the novelist's consciousness of the present, the writer's image that manifests itself in the novel in various forms by means of fantasies, the creation …

Voix Narratives Et Transfigurations De L'Écrivain Dans Le Roman Francophone, Cheikh M. Diop
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
In biblical language, transfiguration refers to the "change in bodily appearance" of the crucified Christ revealing his "divine nature". In the same way, it can be said that the writer is metamorphosed through the process of writing by the creation either of an alter ego or of an imaginary double, be it, animal or inanimate. The first case proposes original figures of the "social status" of the writer. In the second, the latter borrows the voice of a cat or makes a piece of furniture or an intimate object to speak. Therefore, we wonder if the transfiguration of the narrative …

John McGahern is rightly renowned for his carefully crafted prose, his skill at describing characters and situations that have a universal resonance and his uncannily accurate representation of the people and places associated with his native Roscommon and Leitrim. Author of six novels, two short story collections (many of which were brought together in The Collected Stories and the posthumously published Creatures of the Earth, which contains significant new material) and a highly successful memoir, McGahern won several literary prizes and warm critical acclaim. Faber has now brought out a collection of his dramatic writings, a genre in which, …

Artesana De Sí Misma: Gabriela Mistral, Una Intelectual En Cuerpo Y Palabra, Claudia Cabello Hutt
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Artesana de sí misma by Claudia Cabello Hutt reevaluates the place of Nobel laureate Gabriela Mistral in the literary and intellectual history of Latin America, illuminating and filling a number of lingering voids in the study of this canonical figure. Cabello Hutt introduces readers to Mistral’s vast but scarcely studied journalistic prose as well as her unpublished manuscripts, letters, and images held in the United States and in newly opened Chilean archives. Moving beyond her amply discussed poetry, Cabello Hutt demonstrates that Mistral’s essays, visual representations, and gender performance are key to understanding Mistral’s self-construction as a Latin American female …
