Addresses And Speeches By Alabamians: Finding Aid, Bethany Latham
Finding Aids
This collection is comprised of printed copies of speeches and addresses given by Alabamians. The collection was put together by Dr. Alta Millican, Dean of Library Science, Communication and Instructional Media (retired 1986), most probably at the behest of Dr. Ernest Stone, University President at the time, and contains speeches sent to her by Dr. Stone as well as those she collected herself. She labeled them “Important Speeches of Alabamians” and stored them in a vertical file. Dr. Stone referred to them as “Great Speeches by Great Alabamians” and noted in correspondence that the original idea was to laminate or …

Sounds Of The Reich: Nazi Party Radio And Speeches, Katelyn Hanners
Sounds Of The Reich: Nazi Party Radio And Speeches, Katelyn Hanners
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Radio broadcasts and speeches were key aspects of Nazi regime propaganda. From March 1927 to when the Nazi party won power in March 1933, Hitler made 455 public appearances, reaching close to 4.5 million people. Radio was the leading medium during the Great Depression and during all of WWII. Nazi propaganda focused on the effectiveness of the message, not the means through which it was relayed. Nazis liked simplistic and straightforward ideas with no underlying interpretations. Studies have shown that campaigns do not change the opinions of the masses. Rather, they confirm what the people already believe. In the case …

Re-Evaluating Gender Reforms In Non-Western Nations: A Case Study Of Women’S Empowerment In Japan, Maryam Alkubati
Re-Evaluating Gender Reforms In Non-Western Nations: A Case Study Of Women’S Empowerment In Japan, Maryam Alkubati
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper focuses on Japan, a socioeconomically advanced, developed democracy which has relatively low women’s representation within the national parliament. This case demonstrates the lack of systematic relationships between human development and women’s political participation. Prime Minister Shinzō Abe, since resuming office in 2012, has recognized the under-representation of women in the labor market and has subsequently promoted “Womenomics” as one of the three structural reform policies for reviving the Japanese economy. This study will examine the impact that the prime minister’s Womenomics strategies have had on the representation of women in the national parliament. The author collected and compared …

Václav Havel At The End Of The Cold War: The Invention Of Post-Communist Transition In The Address To U.S. Congress, February 21, 1990, Timothy Barney
Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
A mere three months after the peaceful Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, and less than a year after his last imprisonment under the communist regime, playwright-turned-president Václav Havel stood before a joint session of U.S. Congress in February of 1990. In his address, Havel marked, for his American audience, the new freedoms being established at home. More than just a victory lap, however, Havel’s visit articulated the importance of the invention of post-communism, as the end of the Cold War had to be constructed for his global audience. Havel’s version of invention in the speech used temporality and embodiment as key …

Coolidge Against The World: Peace, Prosperity, And Foreign Policy In The 1920s, Joel Webster
Coolidge Against The World: Peace, Prosperity, And Foreign Policy In The 1920s, Joel Webster
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The common narrative of the 1920s is either to largely ignore the nation during this time and the men who presided over it or to simply dismiss the decade as a time of isolationism and Republican failure and the three presidents as corrupt, lazy, silent, or incompetent. The problems of the more typical narratives are most starkly shown in the realm of foreign policy. A more thorough examination of the role of President Calvin Coolidge and the American nation in that area reveals something very different. Because, if we approach those years as a “historical way station on the road …

An Analysis Of Kelly Mcgonigal's Ted Talk: How To Make Stress Your Friend, Ransey Joiner
An Analysis Of Kelly Mcgonigal's Ted Talk: How To Make Stress Your Friend, Ransey Joiner
Scholars Day
No matter what type of difficult things that we have going on in our lives, or how many things that we have to do, or which people we’re around day-to-day, it always seems like one thing is present in our lives, to some degree: and that’s stress. It eats at our well being, it clouds our consciousness and we rack our brains in effort to get rid of it to experience relief. But what if there was another side to stress that most people are missing? -and what if this ‘other side’ of stress that people are missing is closely …
Candidacy Rhetoric In The Rise Of The Donald And Its Relation To Populist And Fascist Ideology, Robert A. Moore
Candidacy Rhetoric In The Rise Of The Donald And Its Relation To Populist And Fascist Ideology, Robert A. Moore
CMC Senior Theses
This essay provides a comparison of Trump’s rhetoric to fascist and populist ideology through an analysis and politolinguistic framing of the usage of apophasis, mesarchia, and pathos in Trump content spanning the first six months of his candidacy for the 2016 U.S. presidency seat. This account finds that Trump is decidedly Ur-Fascist or populist, and cannot be neither of the two, is likely both Ur-Fascist and populist, and leans more in favor of populist ideology given the analyses undertaken. This account ultimately aims to have supported critical discourse analysis (CDA) and politiolinguistics in support of these approaches as rigorous political …

The Exoneration Of Job: A Discussion Of The Joban And Yahwistic Speeches, Robert Edwin "Mack" Mcgehee Iii
The Exoneration Of Job: A Discussion Of The Joban And Yahwistic Speeches, Robert Edwin "Mack" Mcgehee Iii
Honors Theses
This study aims to determine whether Job, staunchly established as innocent in the prosaic introduction of the book, maintains his blamelessness throughout the lengthy poetic corpus. The speeches of the dominant characters, Job and Yahweh, will be examined in order to determine whether Job is in the end exonerated by Yahweh's poetic words despite the harsh statements made in the man's own speeches.
