Creating Musical Scores Inspired By The Intersection Of Human Speech And Music Through Model-Based Cross Synthesis, William Alexander Thompson Iv May 2022

Creating Musical Scores Inspired By The Intersection Of Human Speech And Music Through Model-Based Cross Synthesis, William Alexander Thompson Iv

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research addresses the development of machine learning techniques used to create musical scores and performances that are inspired by the intersection of speech and music. Machine learning models are created from MIDI files that are transcribed from datasets of musical audio recordings and human speech audio recordings. Through the creation of succinct models, model based cross synthesis is possible. Models trained on musical MIDI data are asked to replicate MIDI data that approximate human speech. Alternatively, models that have been trained on MIDI data that approximate speech are asked to replicate musical MIDI data. The product of these developed …

The Art Of Listening: A Conversational Approach To Lecture Recitals, Javor Bracic Jun 2021

The Art Of Listening: A Conversational Approach To Lecture Recitals, Javor Bracic

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Lecture recitals as the practice of pairing live music performance with verbal explication have been around since at least the end of the eighteenth century, but research on them is surprisingly scarce despite how ubiquitous they have become. What exactly are lecture recitals? Where did they originate? How are they conducted? Is there anything we could do to improve upon them?

In this dissertation I not only consider these questions but also propose a new kind of lecture recital I call a conversation concert. After a brief historical overview of lecture-recitalists from Johann Nikolaus Forkel to Rob Kapilow, I showcase …

Cancion Y Danza, Fetes Lointaines, Paisajes By Federico Mompou: A Stylistic Analysis, Qiaoni Liu Apr 2021

Cancion Y Danza, Fetes Lointaines, Paisajes By Federico Mompou: A Stylistic Analysis, Qiaoni Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Spanish composer Frederic Mompou (1893-1987) created his music in an amazingly simple and mysterious way. His works are sometimes referred to as “music that has fallen silent.” Mompou’s piano works are not extremely popular on pianists’ repertoire list, partially due to a lack of familiarity with the composer and his works for piano. This study aims to provide more familiarity to readers about Mompou’s piano works with a goal of helping bring them to the attention of more pianists.

This study provides Mompou’s biography, as well as background information about the Spanish composer and his piano music. Some students may …

Connection Between Visual Arts And Music: The Painting And Music Of I-Uen Wang Hwang, Yining Jenny Jiang

Dissertations, 2014-2019

This document explores the connection between the visual arts and music, particularly focusing on the similarity between visual and aural artistic expression by analyzing two sets of piano pieces composed by I-Uen Wang Hwang, a contemporary Taiwanese-American composer and artist. The piano pieces are Dream Garden, Series I and II (2000-2004) and Preludes for Piano (2016). Series I of Dream Garden contains two piano solo compositions based on a series of Hwang’s own watercolor works. Each composition has an analogous painting: “The Horn of the Plenty” and “Butterfly Orchid”. Series II includes two compositions written for two pianos: “Red and …

Louden Hugely: The Piano Music Of Percy Grainger, Jackson Carruthers Jan 2017

Louden Hugely: The Piano Music Of Percy Grainger, Jackson Carruthers

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961) was an Australian pianist and composer. While highly esteemed during his lifetime, Grainger's music has largely fallen into neglect outside the world of the wind band. However, Grainger left a vast quantity of highly idiomatic and meritorious piano music which deserves greater acceptance. To this end, this paper makes a survey of Grainger's output for piano, to show the merit of his music and prove that it remains relevant even today.

Claude Debussy’S Children’S Corner – A Pedagogical Guide, Nolan O. Pribnow

Undergraduate Research Journal

A student learning Debussy’s Children’s Corner must be properly trained to handle a wide range of physical and musical demands. An experienced teacher, who is able to analyze and anticipate musical and technical challenges, demonstrate specific musical passages, and develop an organized plan of sequential learning steps, will successfully guide the student-learning process. As a teaching guide, this project addressed each piece individually, highlighting various technical and musical challenges, followed by pedagogical recommendations for addressing these challenges.

Chinese Piano Music: An Approach To Performance, Xi Chen Jan 2012

Chinese Piano Music: An Approach To Performance, Xi Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since the piano was introduced in China, in the nineteenth century, many Chinese composers have composed specifically for it. As a result of greater communication and cultural exchange between East and West, Western pianists have begun including Chinese piano pieces in their repertoire. This paper will suggest approaches for the pianist to gain a greater understanding of Chinese piano music. These approaches will include a detailed analysis of each piece, addressing cultural aspects pertinent to an understanding of the music, as well as compositional background, harmony, texture, and piano technique. In addition, each piece will be provided with suggestions intended …

Tombeau (In Memory Of Donald Stenberg): For Violin And Piano, Ronald Bruce Smith Feb 2011

Tombeau (In Memory Of Donald Stenberg): For Violin And Piano, Ronald Bruce Smith

Ronald Bruce Smith

Tombeau (2006) was written in memory of Donald Stenberg who passed away July 10, 2004. Don was a tenor, a professor of voice and, for a good number of years, chair of the voice department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His genuine warmth and gentleness affected everyone who knew him, as did his profound love and knowledge of music and the joy that it gave him. This piece employs certain features associated with tombeaus from previous centuries. Such features include a descending stepwise figure, first presented in this piece diatonically and then later in a more chromatic context, …

The set of five miniatures Op. 31 consists of tuneful short pieces. Played slowly, the four bars from m. 6 to m. 9 in the left hand of the first number, are the theme of the lullaby I composed at Susie's suggestion, soon after our first daughter was born. Years later, I built the present pieces on this idea and this piano set is dedicated to our daughters Natalie and Brigitte. The title -- The Pyrenees -- refers to the mountains that I contemplated …

The Formation Of A Style: Selected Early Works By Hugo Wolf, Jure Rozman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Hugo Wolf’s (1860–1903) most pronounced talent was in marrying music and poetry in novel ways, which is clearly demonstrated by his more than 240 art songs. In his early years Wolf composed a series of works for piano solo, published for the first time in 1974 by the Musikwissenschaftlicher Verlag in Vienna. This paper explores these and other formative works in detail, focusing on music-theoretical issues, but also placing them in historical context by means of a brief biography which includes recent discoveries regarding Wolf’s Slovene lineage.
