Co-Design Towards Positive Change, Gubing Wang, Haiou Zhu
Co-Design Towards Positive Change, Gubing Wang, Haiou Zhu
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Founded in 2014, the Design for Behavior Change Group (now the Designing Change Group) has been promoting knowledge, understanding and actions on how to initiate and maintain positive societal change for the wellbeing of mankind and the planet. Its research focuses on leveraging design to facilitate ethical and responsible behavioral, organisational and societal changes in pursuit of these objectives. Co-design, by actively engaging end-users and other key stakeholders in the design process, offers a promising approach to creating more effective and responsible change interventions. The current strand for DRS2024 explores theories and empirical cases that adopt or reflect co-design on …
Goin' Down Swinging: Queer Fury, Mad Green
Goin' Down Swinging: Queer Fury, Mad Green
Graduate School of Art Theses
How can kickboxing uplift a community? How can Queer rage be utilized in community building and artmaking?
As a Queer artist, my work is inspired by my own experiences. Through drawing, printmaking, photography, video, performance, sculpture, and social practice, I dissect my violent upbringing and its lingering threads in my adult life. In this essay, I discuss the two most prominent features of my art practice: Fight and Community. I navigate these ideas through past works, such as a performance piece of me destroying a news article, a short film about institutional homophobia through aliens and immaculate conception, and most …
X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis Of Historic Art Paint Pigments, Sofia A. Stirpe, Juergen Thieme
X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis Of Historic Art Paint Pigments, Sofia A. Stirpe, Juergen Thieme
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
Utilizing synchrotron radiation, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) microscopy enables researchers to deduce the elemental composition of paint pigments with a higher sensitivity and resolution than that of lab-based XRF instruments. With this information, art historians can date paintings by examining the elemental makeup of paint pigments and the time periods in which they were used. One painting, Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery, has been duplicated by Pieter Brueghel the Younger and other artists, leading to confusion over which artworks are Brueghel masterpieces or copies by other artists. Art historian Maurizio Seracini, retaining a painting that could be assigned …
The Interdisciplinary Music Degree: Music Education, Music Performance, And Music And Fine Arts Administration, Edwin R. Williams
The Interdisciplinary Music Degree: Music Education, Music Performance, And Music And Fine Arts Administration, Edwin R. Williams
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite numerous available careers and degrees in music education, music performance, and music administration, perspectives of many music educators and students desiring an interdisciplinary music degree program inclusive of music education, music performance, and music administration have yet to be expressed or examined publicly. The notion of 21st-century skills presents a demand for flexibility across most facets of K-12 and higher education. These skills necessitate fluency in problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration, thus, music education must move toward more flexible and rigorous preparatory music training programs to remain consistent with current trends. Most undergraduate and graduate degree programs in music …

You’Re Invited! Collaborating With Faculty And Students To Create A Successful Library Event, Laura Semrau
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the printing of Shakespeare’s First Folio, the Baylor University Libraries hosted a three-day celebration; “Shakespeare 400” drew faculty members from six academic departments and leveraged the talents of both graduate and undergraduate students. The four main events drew a cumulative crowd of over 200 people. Graduate students contributed to the events through music performance, a dramatic reading, enthusiastic promotion, and engaged participation. This presentation will explore key take-aways for including graduate students in library events.
The success of Shakespeare 400 was largely due to collaborations between the library, faculty members, and graduate …
Beyond The Score: Interdisciplinary Connections In The High School Choral Ensemble, Kellie Clark
Beyond The Score: Interdisciplinary Connections In The High School Choral Ensemble, Kellie Clark
Theses and Dissertations--Music
An interest in interdisciplinary instruction, generally and within the arts, can be traced through numerous progressive educational movements extending back to the earliest philosophers. There has, however, been limited discussion regarding an interdisciplinary approach in high school ensemble classrooms. If a holistic teaching approach, one which examines a musical work from multiple angles while inviting and encouraging student curiosity and agency, can benefit music students in profound ways, why are secondary choral educators hesitant to employ such methods?
This monograph presents a concrete and practical application for the inclusion of interdisciplinary instruction in the high school choral classroom developed through …
Anticipating Combustion: Suffering's Potential For Finding Meaning, Perseverance, And Transcendence, Alexander Alvarez
Anticipating Combustion: Suffering's Potential For Finding Meaning, Perseverance, And Transcendence, Alexander Alvarez
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Arising from the complications of an underprivileged and impoverished background this thesis focuses on exposing the grotesque consequences of conflicting ideologies through personal and societal suffering while in search of universal connections to showcase the need for compassion and understanding. My artistic practice is utilized as an entry point to have difficult discussions, a tool for teaching themes of injustice, inequality, and mistreatment. The traumatizing experience of poverty or corruption has the potential to be transmuted into something beneficial. I utilize discarded, low valued, unwanted, and damaged materials in my artmaking to symbolize transfiguration, an advanced state of former self. …

Attitudes Of Experiential Designers Across Design Disciplines, Danielle Degarmo
Attitudes Of Experiential Designers Across Design Disciplines, Danielle Degarmo
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
The expanded use of the term scenography is widening its understanding of the word to encompass many experiential design disciplines beyond its origin in theatre. At its essence, scenography is the culmination of a designer’s collaborative efforts to take a prompt, whether it be a client program, a script, or other, and produce a holistic assemblage of experiential design elements to spatially engage an end user. Many experts in across design fields have acknowledged that there is disciplinary cross over among those practicing in experiential design fields in terms of design output or intention. By means of designer surveys and …

Personhood: Defined, Collected, And Integrated, Amber De Coen
Personhood: Defined, Collected, And Integrated, Amber De Coen
IASDR Conference Series
Person-centred care (PCC) has been a prominent topic in the healthcare industry for several decades. Although there are various conceptualizations and definitions of PCC, the fundamental idea is that the focus of care should be on the 'person' rather than the 'patient' (Entwistle & Watt, 2013). This means that to practice true PCC, it is essential to understand who a person is, what they value in life, and acknowledge their personhood. However, for non-verbal persons receiving care, recognizing their personhood can be challenging for formal and informal carers. Most current tools and methods rely on cognitive and verbal abilities that …

Interdisciplinary Studies In General Music Education: Enhancing Learning Across Content Areas, Tara Kathleen Roof Stradley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Some perspectives of educators and community members in small rural school districts fail to see the academic benefits of music education and the importance of integrated forms of study, despite the many clear connections that can be seen between the general music curriculum and other content areas such as math and language arts. Interdisciplinary studies in general music education are essential for student growth across content areas. This study reveals the importance of music integration and interdisciplinary music studies in small rural elementary schools. It gives example lessons of mathematics and language arts in the elementary music curricula. Guided by …
Family Dining: Food And Drink In The Sopranos – A Gastrocritical Approach, Lisa Davies
Family Dining: Food And Drink In The Sopranos – A Gastrocritical Approach, Lisa Davies
Dissertations
This thesis uses gastrocriticism to explore food and drink in the 86 episodes of the long-form narrative HBO television series The Sopranos. Gastrocriticism is an emerging branch of literary criticism that draws on scholarship from a range of disciplines such as sociology, anthropology and cultural studies. A deeper understanding of the series was gained by using a structured framework of enquiry to explore narrative, setting, characterisation and genre through the lens of food and foodways. The Sopranos is a story of an Italian-American crime family and food is abundant in the series and bound up with the identity of …

New Paradigms In Band Performance: An Analysis Of Three Prototypes, Scott Walker-Parker
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance
This document seeks to propose new paradigms in band performance through inter-, multi-, and transdisciplinarity. Initial inspirations were drawn from performance innovations shaped by the new music theater which became popular in the 20th century. Key concepts which were used throughout the creative, planning, logistic, rehearsal, and performance processes are analyzed in three recitals through prototypes of new paradigms in band performance. These concepts include accessibility and community, nonverbal/multimodal performance and instruction versus time, and nonverbal/multimodal communication.
The document has been organized in a manner which highlights successes and breakdowns of each process so future refinement can be made. …
Purpose In Place: Discerning And Forefronting Forgotten Landscapes Using The Methodological Lens Of Augmented Reality, Lindy Westenhoff
Purpose In Place: Discerning And Forefronting Forgotten Landscapes Using The Methodological Lens Of Augmented Reality, Lindy Westenhoff
Doctoral Dissertations
Augmented reality (AR) is an under-studied tool that deserves more academic attention and gaze. By using the built landscape as its point of orientation, but providing a virtual interface with which to engage, the augmented landscape serves as a departure of the traditional digital-physical divide. This realm raises questions regarding purpose and intention, but also has its own limitations and issues with dynamic, complex spaces that change frequently. Each chapter of this dissertation stands alone as a “part” – they connect, however, through the use of this technology to answer questions unique to their spaces.
Part 1 explores the relationship …

Perspectives On (In)Human(E) Displacement And Migration, Jordan Carey
Perspectives On (In)Human(E) Displacement And Migration, Jordan Carey
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This interdisciplinary, multimedia document gathers various media pertaining to human displacement and migration. The collected perspectives take the form of poetry, academic research, books, photography, as well as un-sortable multimedia projects. Depending on the source, they are cited, introduced, quoted, summarized and/or analyzed. These sources are connected by their enactment of creative resistance, authenticity, proximity to lived experience with displacement and migration, and dedication to uplift the very truths silenced by colonialism and every intersecting mode of oppression that seeks to control and dominate. These truths are that every single human seeking asylum is a capable, resilient, intelligent, self-reliant, creative, …
Mistletoe Blooms: A Proposal Of Method, Petra Ellerby
Mistletoe Blooms: A Proposal Of Method, Petra Ellerby
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
The intellectual product housed within this two-part document is the result of an attempt both to engage with unaccustomed formats—fine art, design—and to do justice by a set of idiosyncratic methodological tenets that have played a pivotal role in my personal trajectory, my own internal history of ideas. In spite of its compound nature, the project remains faithful to a fundamentally humanistic spirit: it is an allusive study in cross-disciplinary thinking, an affective attempt to summarize, define, communicate, and defend one specific way of seeing and understanding. At its core, my capstone serves as a venue (even an excuse) for …

Creativity, Craftsmanship, And Connection: Large-Format Sculpture Design, Jacqueline L. Puga, Gordon Hoople
The STEAM Journal
Artistry is a concept that is not usually explored in engineering yet is an invaluable skill that touches everything from product design to systems thinking. This past summer I developed conceptual designs for a large format sculpture that required connecting engineering knowledge with artistic vision. The initial phase required constant inspiration and creativity. The first step was to look at previous sculptures showcased throughout the world, such as at venues like “Burning Man,” to understand the possibilities or limitations of the space provided. Sketching varied and numerous ideas was essential in our design process. Next, we took our favorite ideas …

Critical Exhibition Methods In Museums, Jaimie Davis Ms
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Art and anthropology are intimately intertwined as art is an extension of culture which falls under the purview of anthropology. Utilizing interdisciplinary methodology that incorporates both anthropology's considerations for culture and art's consideration of aesthetic creates the best possible methodology for exhibition in museums. Art museums have enough aesthetic and could benefit from the considerations an anthropology's school of thought.

The Building Of Astronomical Observatories On Native American Sacred Sites, Jennie Lacomb
The Building Of Astronomical Observatories On Native American Sacred Sites, Jennie Lacomb
Inside-Out: Interdisciplinary Studies
In the past few years, there has been controversy about the use of the Hawaiian mountain Mauna Kea as a location for observatories. Astronomers are planning for a new telescope to be built while some native Hawaiian people are protesting it. This is one of the examples that will be used in discussing the general conflict between astronomy projects and Native Americans. Astronomers see mountains as prime locations for observing the sky; Native people can see them as extremely sacred places that, in some cases, are central to their traditional religion. Their differing worldviews are at the core of disputes …

Entities: A Field Of Imaginary Games, Thrasyvoulos Ioannis Kalaitzidis
LSU Master's Theses
With this body of work, I am looking for visual symbols that help communicate unuttered meanings through storytelling and stimulate an affectual response to the viewer. This exploration is presented in two different forms: a surreal sculptural installation and a board game. The installation consists of large-scale sculptures made from light and soft materials (polyurethane foam, plastic waste, paper) that are available to move inside the gallery, while the board game is presented as a set of 3D prints with instructions on how the participants can play it. The materials used in the installation suggest a way to transform waste …
