Thomas Reid On Language And Mind, Alastair L.V. Crosby
Thomas Reid On Language And Mind, Alastair L.V. Crosby
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The dissertation concerns Thomas Reid’s philosophy of language. In the first three chapters, I discuss his philosophy of language in relation to his developmental psychology. More specifically, I discuss his answers to two questions: (i) what does the ability to understand artificial linguistic signs make possible? and (ii) what makes the ability to understand artificial linguistic signs possible? The focus is on Reid’s claim that the mind’s ability to understand artificial linguistic signs makes it possible for it to acquire a number of distinct mental abilities, such as to conceive universals, to judge, and to reason. I argue this claim …
Student-Perceived Inclusivity In The Fyc Classroom: Embracing Multilingualism, Melinda Grant
Student-Perceived Inclusivity In The Fyc Classroom: Embracing Multilingualism, Melinda Grant
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
The purpose of this study was to compare student perspectives on inclusivity in the first-year English composition classroom viewed explicitly through two distinct lenses: 1. a pre-post survey design that measures students’ perceptions of classroom inclusivity and 2. instructor-perceived observations that reflect upon methods of pedagogical delivery within a multimodal framework. The results provide a further understanding of how curriculum is being received in a diverse academic environment utilizing blended instructional modalities. While all students did not embrace purposeful means of translanguaging via code-meshing in classroom formative and summative writing opportunities, 100% of students surveyed indicated experiencing inclusivity in the …
Heidegger On The “Futural” Poet Rilke Poetizing The Essential Truth Of Being?, James Magrini
Heidegger On The “Futural” Poet Rilke Poetizing The Essential Truth Of Being?, James Magrini
Philosophy Scholarship
This essay poses and responds uniquely to the following crucial questions: Does Rilke’s poetry poetize the event of Being for Dasein? Does Rilke indicate that the human being can yet achieve such a mode of “historical” existence in relation to the Earth or the holy? Heidegger responds to the first query in the affirmative; Rilke does poetize this event, albeit through a “tempered” and somewhat traditional view of Western metaphysics. To the second query, it appears that Heidegger responds in a slightly cryptic and ambiguous manner, and to clarify this response, I turn to Heidegger’s interpretation of Rilke’s “Angel” as …

An Analysis Of Class In Composition From 1970-2010, Holland R. Cutrell
An Analysis Of Class In Composition From 1970-2010, Holland R. Cutrell
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Class and socioeconomic status in composition and rhetoric remains a topic that is felt, yet not often discussed. The language students use is highly indicative of their class background, and everyone has a slightly altered form of discourse they prefer (Zebroski, 2006). My thesis examines the issues working-class students have faced with literacy acquisition and discourse assimilation from 1970s–mid 2000s. My analysis illustrates how composition and rhetoric has evolved from the error-centered and hyper-correct culture of the 1970s to the technologically dominated, media driven production powerhouse that affects every aspect of college and beyond. To most effectively address how working-class …
The Meaning Of Movement: Using Motion Design To Enrich Words For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Hannah Elyse Colasurdo
The Meaning Of Movement: Using Motion Design To Enrich Words For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Hannah Elyse Colasurdo
Masters Theses
This thesis aims to address challenging areas of vocabulary for deaf and hard of hearing children by developing an open resource for students, parents, teachers, and content creators that utilizes motion to enhance written words for deaf and hard of hearing children. This research seeks to study the means of nonverbal communication such as body language expression and paralinguistic prosody (i.e., tone, intonation, volume, and pitch) qualities within the framework of graphic design through motion design. Body movement and expression are essential during face-to-face communication, but written language lacks such context clues. Additionally, the hard of hearing may not fully …
Grammars Of Identity: Political Languages Of Activism In Argentina And The United States, Ana M. Ospina Pedraza
Grammars Of Identity: Political Languages Of Activism In Argentina And The United States, Ana M. Ospina Pedraza
Doctoral Dissertations
In recent history, democratic popular assemblies have played a significant role in political organizing worldwide. Contemporary theorists and social movement scholars see a global ethos of collective action in the growth of the assembly form. This dissertation studies the language of collective action in two movements that illustrate the global significance of assemblies: the neighborhood assemblies of Buenos Aires in 2002 and the New York General Assembly of Occupy Wall Street in 2011. These movements were connected by transnational networks of activism and a commitment to internal democracy now prevalent in the global left. This research asks two questions: what …
English For Tourism: Towards A Topical-Interactional English Course For Undergraduates Specializing In The Area Of Travel & Tourism, Hassan Bouzidi
English For Tourism: Towards A Topical-Interactional English Course For Undergraduates Specializing In The Area Of Travel & Tourism, Hassan Bouzidi
Dirassat
The focus of this study is the development of a topical-interactional course for Moroccan undergraduates specializing in the area of travel and tourism. The existing global courses have not been designed for this particular market and are therefore alien to the local needs. A survey was conducted in the region of Agadir to establish the needs of employers and employees in the travel and tourism industry. Employers point out that most candidates lacked the communicative/pragmatic skill necessary for the jobs they were applying for. The employers cite the 'general' aspect of the English language syllabus taken at university as the …

Lexical-Semantic Group Of Ornithonyms In Language And Their Use, Nargiza Maxmudova
Lexical-Semantic Group Of Ornithonyms In Language And Their Use, Nargiza Maxmudova
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
This article discusses the lexical-semantic or linguoculturological aspects of phrases and units related to ornithonyms (bird names) in language, particularly Uzbek and English, and provides some examples. Some of the birds of prey and non-birds of prey are cited as the main object of study. The metaphorical transfer of ornithonyms with a transparent internal form is based on three types of differential semantics: showing the classification feature of denotation; showing the external characteristic of denotation and describing the denotation by the actions it produces.Terms that have a transparent internal form are of particular interest for this study, as are terms that …

Man V.S. Wild: An Analysis Of Language Used Regarding Human-Wildlife Conflict In The Kibale National Park Community, Western Region, Uganda, Sophie Perfetto
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
If humans are to live sustainably and in harmony with wildlife in the vicinity of Protected Areas, policy makers, and government authorities need to make informed decisions with consideration to the needs of local communities. For this to happen, policy makers must understand the perceptions of local communities and take local perspectives into account. As language is at the root of perception, language was studied in the context of its role in shaping local perceptions of human-wildlife conflict and consequential conflict mitigation strategies. Six communities around the Northern region of Kibale National Park, Uganda, were studied, with sites located in …
Some Notes On Birds: Language And Attention In The Age Of Social Media, Aimee Lamoureux
Some Notes On Birds: Language And Attention In The Age Of Social Media, Aimee Lamoureux
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Technology, social media, and its affiliated distractions are now an ever-present part of our daily lives. Attention is a commodity, one which tech companies value because it delivers them bigger and bigger profits. Their products are intentionally designed to be additive, to demand more and more of our time and attention throughout our day. However, attention is not simply a commodity, but the way in which we connect with the external world and attend to our everyday experience. The world that we create in the mind is the world that ends up forming the reality of our everyday lives. Complex …

Linguostatistic Features Of English And Uzbek Proverbs, Nurbek Juraev
Linguostatistic Features Of English And Uzbek Proverbs, Nurbek Juraev
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
The following article provides some findings about linguostatistic features of English and Uzbek proverbs. Proverbs, which are one of the genres of folklore, combine the life experiences, dreams and aspirations of ancestors, their attitude to the state and society, historical and spiritual state, philosophical, ethnic and aesthetic feelings. They have been polished over the millennium to form a concise poetic form. Linguistic statistics is a branch of linguistics that is used to study, analyze, and classify language sources using a statistical method. Among proverbs which we have discussed, we have found not only universal proverbs of both nations, but also …
The Role Of Language In Building Abstract, Generalized Conceptual Representations Of One-And Two-Place Predicates: A Comparison Between Adults And Infants, Jill De Villiers
The Role Of Language In Building Abstract, Generalized Conceptual Representations Of One-And Two-Place Predicates: A Comparison Between Adults And Infants, Jill De Villiers
Philosophy: Faculty Publications
Theories of relations between language and conceptual development benefit from empirical evidence for concepts available in infancy, but such evidence is comparatively scarce. Here, we examine early representations of specific concepts, namely, sets of dynamic events corresponding either to predicates involving two variables with a reversible, asymmetric relation between them (such as the set of all events that correspond to a linguistic phrase like “a dog is pushing a car,”) or to comparatively simpler, one-variable predicates (such as the set of events corresponding to a phrase like “a dog is jumping.”). We develop a non-linguistic, anticipatory eye-tracking task that can …
The Tempest From Colonial And Postcolonial Lens, Amirmohammad Mohammadi
The Tempest From Colonial And Postcolonial Lens, Amirmohammad Mohammadi
International Review of Humanities Studies
The paper focuses on how the colonizers who in this play are Prospero and Miranda in particular, endeavor to inflict their own socio-cultural precept including their language to make the colonized fully unprotected in The Tempest as a colonial play, but eventually fail to fulfill this attempt. In addition, the high importance of learning the language of the colonizer by the colonized gets illuminated which finally contributes to Caliban so as to undermine the roots of the colonizer in the colony. This article fully evaluates affected literary works by The Tempest, the importance of transferring the colonizer’s language to the …

This project aims to assess the relative success of revitalization efforts for seven languages: Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Irish, Hopi, Navajo, Breton, and Occitan. The success of linguistic revitalization is determined through comparative analysis of minority languages in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and France as seen through each country’s history, melting pot experiences, traditions, language protection laws, education system, in addition to the differing levels of diffusion via the Internet. A key point of analysis is the strength of language protection laws in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, and France. Language is the most primordial expression of …

The Mental Spaces And The Construction Of Meaning: Metaphor And Metaphor Is A Model, غسان الشمري
The Mental Spaces And The Construction Of Meaning: Metaphor And Metaphor Is A Model, غسان الشمري
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
This research is devoted to one of the most important theories of cognitive significance: the theory of mental spaces, as developed by G. Fauconnier [1984] (1994) and (1997) in particular. It is a theory that language is concerned with the building of meaning directly in context; that is, sentences can not be analyzed in isolation from speech. The semantics, traditionally considered to be concerned with the meaning of sentences in context, can not Separated from pragmatics, which means the contextual sense of sentences, and the building of meaning is context-driven and therefore subject to the information of a particular situation. …

Dissonant Forms: Landscape, Nature-Love, And Art, Taylor F. Benoit
Dissonant Forms: Landscape, Nature-Love, And Art, Taylor F. Benoit
Masters Theses
As artists continue the long and storied lineage of Landscape, are there aesthetic responsibilities that come with representing the forces that afford you the capacity to do so? As we delineate spaces into places, endless interconnectivity into knowable “systems”, and living matter into thing based taxonomies, who do these delineations serve and with what intentions do we proceed? My studio art practice explores what it means to give form to our Former—the Former being that from which we came, the here and now, our explicit ecological reality, the stuff of what we call nature. …

Does Language Affect Trust In Global Professional Contexts? Perceptions Of International Business Professionals, Jane Kassis Henderson, Leena Louhiala-Salminen
Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization
A characteristic of trust is that it is more easily built in close-knit communities where common ground and a common language are already established. Building trust is, therefore, a challenge for business professionals who use English as a shared working language in the multilingual environment of multinational companies. In this exploratory article, concepts from trust research and principles from the field of interactional sociolinguistics are used to throw light on the interplay of language and trust. Based on an analysis of survey and interview data from business professionals in globally operating companies in several countries, findings indicate that language related …
Aménagement Sociolinguistique De L'Espace Urbain Au Maroc, Amina Saoussany
Aménagement Sociolinguistique De L'Espace Urbain Au Maroc, Amina Saoussany
Dirassat
The sociolinguistic configuration of Morocco reveals that Morocco is a multi-lingual country. Many languages coexist in it. They are of unequal importance, though, the language-field prevailing in Morocco is characterized by the prevalence of an array of languages and dialects (cf Abbassi, 1977; Boukous, 1979; Gravel, 1979; Bentahila, 1983; Ennaji, 1991...). This field remains highly distinct from the multi-racial mosaic finding form in some countries like(...) Cameroon or Tanzania (El Gherbi 1993:13). It produces an area where the confrontation of historical and language factors results into the coexistence of certain dialects. It also contributes to the evolution of some languages …

Is It Real?, Hana Al-Saadi
Masters Theses
The architecture of Doha, Qatar is defined by skins of glass. When the sun shines upon the layers of glass, it creates a shimmery reflective grid across the surface of the city. These reflections, while visually intriguing, conceal many private realities behind the surface.
As a multidisciplinary artist, I attempt to maneuver in the space between the opacity of the facade and stories that lie behind. Specifically, I use this space to directly expose the contradictions that I encounter here.
The Poetry Of Revolution: The Legacy Of A Written Rebellion, Eva Erickson
The Poetry Of Revolution: The Legacy Of A Written Rebellion, Eva Erickson
Honors Theses
In Solmaz Sharif’s debut poetry collection Look, she incorporates United States Department of Defense terminology in order to simultaneously revolt against forced erasure and reclaim words that were once used for violent and oppressive purposes. This thesis argues that poetry is an inherently politicized, revolutionary tool that possesses the ability to radicalize and incite rebellion against silencing, dismissive power structures. Sharif’s identity, as an Iranian-American immigrant woman, is omnipresent in her own interpretation of familial trauma at the hands of American imperialist forces. In addition, the events of the late twentieth-century Iranian revolution that resulted in the deaths of many …

Language As The Medium: A Literature Review. Harnessing The Prolific Power Of Dramatic Language As A Therapeutic Tool In Drama Therapy, Edward Freeman
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Language in and of the theatre, with its palate of variegated writing styles and playwrights from throughout time, has the potential to be harnessed, focused, and systematized for use as a therapeutic tool within drama therapy – the field’s artistic medium. Drama therapy could benefit from having a specific medium germane to its artform which has the potential to provide practitioners with a common resource and means of communication, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, as well as align the field with other creative arts therapies. Language encompasses all forms of human communication – speaking, writing, signing, gesturing, expressing facially – …

Lacunae In A Modern Linguistics, Dilorom Khaydarova
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
Following work is dedicated to a property of the entire lexical system of the language. The phenomenon of lacunae is associated with the systemic nature of language, which is expressed and conditioned by the nonverbal nature of our thinking, as well as the whole variety of mental forms of reflection of reality, and the fundamental difference between thinking and language processes. The intra-linguistic lacunae as a linguistic phenomenon, analyzes various types of intra lingual lacunae in the lexical system of the Uzbek language. Special attention is paid to the study of systemic (potential) lacunae as to the largest group. The …
