Uncovered Truths Of The Inequalities Encountered By Female Educators, Rachel Katoll
Uncovered Truths Of The Inequalities Encountered By Female Educators, Rachel Katoll
Undergraduate Voices
This paper was conducted to illustrate the paradox of a female dominated field praising male educators over their female counterparts. This is proven to be the case through workplace mistreatment, professional growth opportunities, and struggles encountered through recruitment. Through this paper, I evaluate the tear down of female educators as men become the prioritized employee. The information drawn together throughout this paper came from a collection of online sources, personal interviews, and articles.
Finding And Making Home: Poems And Reflections Of Undergraduate Children Of Immigrants, Gladys Perez
Finding And Making Home: Poems And Reflections Of Undergraduate Children Of Immigrants, Gladys Perez
Master's Theses
The number of children of immigrants within the United States has grown over the past few decades and more so we are seeing a greater number of these children pursuing a higher education. With a growing number of undergraduate children of immigrants growing, there is a need to understand how they see themselves as a part of the United States. Previous studies take into consideration how these students navigate higher education, however, there is a lack of research on these students’ larger understanding of belonging within the overall nation. Poetry as data and a process was the grounding methodology that …
Poor Queer Studies: Class, Race, And The Field, Matt Brim
Poor Queer Studies: Class, Race, And The Field, Matt Brim
Publications and Research
This study asks, What are the material conditions under which queer studies is done in the academy? It finds a longstanding association of queer studies with the well-resourced, selective colleges and flagship campuses that are the drivers of class and race stratification in higher education in the U.S. That is, the field of queer studies, as a recognizable academic formation, has been structured by the material and intellectual resources of precisely those institutions that most steadfastly refuse to adequately serve poor and minority students, including poor and minority queer students. In response, “poor queer studies” calls for a critical reorientation …

Gendered Identity And Investment In Language Learning: A Case Study Of Heritage Spanish Speakers, Farah Ali
Gendered Identity And Investment In Language Learning: A Case Study Of Heritage Spanish Speakers, Farah Ali
Friday Forum
Much of the existing research in second and heritage language acquisition (S/HLA) takes a traditional approach of focusing on the cognitive processes involved in S/HLA, as well as the resulting outcomes. A relatively recent approach that has emerged in S/HLA scholarship, however, relates the learner to the social world in terms of how sociocultural contexts may shape an individual’s language learning experiences and their personal investment in the process. This emergent approach also challenges traditional categorical conceptions of identity, positing that it is dynamic, fluid, constructed, and negotiated in social contexts. Following this approach, my objective is to demonstrate how …

“Partnering To Understand Undergraduate Research And Writing Longitudinally”, Donna Scheidt, Cara Kozma, Holly Middleton, Kathy Shields
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
In her longitudinal case study of a single undergraduate, College Writing and Beyond (2007), Anne Beaufort investigates several knowledge domains contributing to students’ development as writers. As a team of librarians and writing faculty in research and teaching partnership, we hope to build on Beaufort’s work by examining and elaborating the role of research with respect to writing development by sharing findings from our own longitudinal study of undergraduates’ development as writer-researchers. Specifically, we are interested in the ways in which undergraduates’ research interfaces with their writing practices as they advance through their general education coursework and various disciplines. How …
Scholarly Publishing In Korea: Language, Perception, Practice Of Korean University Faculty, Eun-Young Julia Kim
Scholarly Publishing In Korea: Language, Perception, Practice Of Korean University Faculty, Eun-Young Julia Kim
Faculty Publications
This study reports how internationalization of academic knowledge is reflected in the language choice of Korean academic journals across disciplines and examines perceptions and practices of eighty two faculty from various disciplines at three Korean universities concerning publishing in English journals. The results indicate that natural science has the highest percentage of English-medium journals whereas those in humanities and social science predominantly use Korean as a medium of publication. Similar disciplinary patterns are observed in the responses to survey questions about frequency of publication as well as desire and preference for publishing papers in English. The biggest motivation for Korean …
College Dropout To College Professor, Deborah L. Gochenaur, Rose I. Verbos
College Dropout To College Professor, Deborah L. Gochenaur, Rose I. Verbos
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Being a college dropout wasn’t something to be proud of; it just happened. Life doesn’t always turn out the way we want or expect. Yet, it is often how we deal with defeat that defines us – figuring out when to lick our wounds and when to come back fighting. It took a few years to redefine my dream, start a family, and seem to move forward, but the ache for more was always in the back of my mind. Could I succeed at something at which I had already failed? Going back to school at a community college at …
Contemporary Philosophical Proposals For The University: Toward A Philosophy Of Higher Education By Aaron Stoller & Eli Kramer, Editors, Laura E. Smithers
Contemporary Philosophical Proposals For The University: Toward A Philosophy Of Higher Education By Aaron Stoller & Eli Kramer, Editors, Laura E. Smithers
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Aaron Stoller and Eli Kramer’s (2018) edited volume Contemporary Philosophical Proposals for the University: Toward a Philosophy of Higher Education is a thought provoking addition to the literature between philosophy and higher education. The editors argue for the possibilities of philosophical thinking, particularly a reconstructive philosophy as read through the work of John Dewey, to ameliorate the problems of our neoliberal times. The contributed chapters extend this work to particular sites in higher education as well as through additional philosophers and philosophical schools of thought. This volume will be of interest to philosophers engaged with problems of higher education, university …

Gladys Godínez, Gladys Godínez
Coming to the Plains Oral Histories/ Llenando las Llanuras Historias Orales
Gladys Godínez was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala. In 1989 the Guatemalan Civil War and the desire to be together as a family drove the Godínez family to immigrate to the United States. Godínez lived in Inglewood, CA when she first immigrated to the USA. Godínez attended school and learned English. The large Latino population of Inglewood blunted the cultural shock. As part of the early wave of Latino immigrants to Lexington, NE, Godínez and her family faced cultural shock, language challenges, and discrimination. Godínez graduated from UNK with a degree in political science. Godínez currently runs her own non-profit …

Congolese Refugee Students In Higher Education: Equity And Opportunity, Refik Sadiković
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore Congolese refugee students’ experiences in higher education in the United States. In order to understand the challenges Congolese students face in higher education, this study used narrative inquiry methodology to investigate Congolese students’ lived experiences that affected their educational endeavors before and after resettlement to the United States. The study examined personal stories of 10 Congolese students in the Pacific Northwest using semi-structured in-depth interviews, one-on-one follow-up interviews, field notes and two focus group interviews. Using narrative analysis five reoccurring themes were identified and discussed in the findings. The study findings indicate …
Self-Perceived Success Of First-Generation College-Going Latinx Students, Sarah Mongillo
Self-Perceived Success Of First-Generation College-Going Latinx Students, Sarah Mongillo
Honors Scholar Theses
This exploratory study aims to address the unique experiences of Latinx first-generation college-going students during their undergraduate careers. Literature has emphasized the obstacles Latinx students face during admission phase to college; this research examines the experiences of students attending a predominantly white institution (PWI) in the northeast. Latinx individuals are the most underrepresented ethnic group on college campuses, and those whose parents lack knowledge of the US education system must overcome additional struggles. Through qualitative data analysis of 20 undergraduate students’ survey responses, this study finds that first-generation college-going Latinx students feel isolated in their college experience and prioritize non-traditional …

Incivility As A Barrier To Embeddedness Among Engineering Students: Does Gender Matter?, Katelyn R. Reynoldson
Incivility As A Barrier To Embeddedness Among Engineering Students: Does Gender Matter?, Katelyn R. Reynoldson
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
To meet the current demand for engineers, research has focused on how to attract and retain qualified candidates in the field, especially those that are underrepresented (e.g., women; NSB, 2016). The present study investigates incivility and embeddedness, which have been found to be antecedents of retention in both the workplace (Cortina, Magley, Williams, & Langhout, 2001; Mitchell, Holtom, Lee, Sablynski, & Erez, 2001) and the collegiate setting (Caza & Cortina, 2007; Major et al., 2015). To extend previous research, both constructs were examined simultaneously among undergraduate engineering students. Undergraduate, first-year engineers completed an online survey indicating the extent to which …

Teaching College Writing To High School Students: A Mixed Methods Investigation Of Dual Enrollment Composition Students' Writing Curriculum And Writing Self-Efficacy, Erin Dena Scott-Stewart
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to use a quantitative survey to assess the relationships between the credit pathways students choose to earn first-year, first-semester (FYFS) university writing credit (i.e. dual enrollment, Advanced Placement, university courses, and ACT/SAT exemptions) and several writing experiences and outcomes, including writing curriculum, self-efficacy, self-regulatory strategy use, and course performance. The same survey was also used to explore relationships between these writing experiences and outcomes and preexisting student characteristics (i.e. race/ethnicity, gender, and parents’ education). For dual enrollment (DE) students only, the following aspects of the participants’ writing experiences were also investigated using …

Mlearning: Powerful Learning Tools For Eap In Higher Education, Rania M Rafik Khalil
English Language and Literature
In many of today’s private higher education institutions, it is difficult to find students without a mobile phone, a PC tablet, or an ipad. At the same time, it is even more difficult to find students in higher education who use their mobile devices for academic purposes. Research indicates that English language instructors in higher education are not necessarily advocates of mobile use in the teaching classroom (Dashtesatani, 2016; Ally, 2013; Stockwell, 2012). However, in recent, years, higher education institutions are advocating the use of mobile learning for English language learning and promoting it as a “powerful learning aid” (Chen …
Cal Poly’S Role In Globalization, Ava Fry
Cal Poly’S Role In Globalization, Ava Fry
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper discusses the effects of an uneasy position for America in the 1980s business markets on the university’s decision to internationalize the curriculum, specifically the responses of Cal Poly’s administration and its student body. The rhetoric used for the proposal of an International Education Office in 1988 by the Academic Senate, revealed an unexpected motivation behind its creation that intrigued me to look further. It seemed that the education system was rapidly globalizing in schools across the nation. A dramatic increase of studies on programs abroad support this claim, however, research failed to show the same international action at …
History Of California Polytechnic Foundation, 1940s – 1950s: A Power Struggle Of Private Management Of Higher Education And State Management, Jon Reinemann
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper is an examination of the history of California Polytechnic Foundation during the 1940s – 1950s. A power struggle of private management of higher education and state management existed between the administration of California Polytechnic State University and the Department of Education of California. Julian A. McPhee made his personal mission to extend the financial stability for the University after the massive cuts it suffered in the Great Depression. He would ultimately fail as the other California College Presidents brought back the legal incorporation and revised it to make it under direct supervision of CPSU San Luis Obispo and …
Improving Access To Ministerial Training Through The Use Of Electronic Devices: A Qualitative Study Of Educators In Developing Nations, Andrew John Beaty
Improving Access To Ministerial Training Through The Use Of Electronic Devices: A Qualitative Study Of Educators In Developing Nations, Andrew John Beaty
Theses and Dissertations
This study was based on the concern that in developing nations, the vast majority of pastors in local churches have no training to prepare them for the duties they are expected to carry out as ministers. With the increase of technology being available around the world, the questions have arisen as to whether or not technology can be utilized to help improve access to this training.
A qualitative approach was employed to interview thirteen people involved in global theological education in developing nations and to learn from them as to the trends that they see being utilized in regards to …

The History Books Tell It? Collective Bargaining In Higher Education In The 1940s, William A. Herbert
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
This article presents a history of unionization and collective bargaining in higher education during and just after World War II, decades before the establishment of statutory frameworks for labor representation. It examines the collective bargaining program adopted by the University of Illinois in 1945, along with contracts negotiated at other institutions, which demonstrated support for employee self-organization. It will also presents counter-examples of institutions using the courts and congressional investigators to defeat unionization efforts. . Lastly, the article will examine the role of United Public Workers of America (UPWA) and its predecessor unions in organizing and negotiating on behalf of …

Higher Education In Tajikistan: Institutional Landscape And Key Policy Developments, Alan J. Deyoung, Zumrad Kataeva, Dilrabo Jonbekova
Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation Faculty Publications
Higher education in Tajikistan has undergone substantial changes over the past 25 years as a result of both its internal crises and those social and economic transition challenges seen throughout the Newly Independent States (NIS). HEIs in the country have also shown eagerness to change and grow as they move toward world education space. In this chapter, we examine the evolution of the Tajik system of higher education from the Soviet time through independence (1991–2015) in terms of growth, emerging landscape and diversification, and key policy developments and issues. We analyze these changes in the context of relevant economic, social …

The “Americanization” Of Global Education: A Comparative Study Of American And Italian Students At John Cabot University In Rome, Italy, Chiara Evelti
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
With the turn of the century, the rise of globalization has greatly impacted, and continues to impact, the development of nation-states’ economies and native cultures. This international phenomenon generates the idea that countries are now on a similar playing field, whether that be culturally, economically, or politically. While it is hard to defend the latter, globalization has seemingly “flattened” the world by way of bringing individuals of different cultures, ethnicities, races, genders, and nationalities closer together. Moreover, as citizens of this internationalized community, we see a specific type of cultural globalization through increased opportunities in travel, the rise in number …
For Such A Time And Place As This: Christian Higher Education For The Common Good, Cynthia Wells
For Such A Time And Place As This: Christian Higher Education For The Common Good, Cynthia Wells
Higher Education Faculty Scholarship
One might argue that this is not a wise time to raise queries of the common good for Christian higher education. Our in-boxes and newsfeeds provide persistent reminders of the crises facing higher education today, many of which uniquely impact Christian colleges and universities. A crisis of the humanities, as students turn away from areas of study traditionally associated with the liberal arts. A crisis of cost, as independent colleges wrestle with an unsustainable financial model and an increasingly skeptical constituency. An enrollment crisis amid declines in the number of high school graduates, especially in the northeast and midwest. Colleges …

Challenges And Motivations Experienced By 1st Generation Latina/O Students In Higher Education, Ereisa G. Morales
2018 Symposium
As of 2014, Latinx have accounted for more than half of the United States population. Additionally, the number of Latinx students pursuing higher education is increasing across the country, yet these students have also shown to be the highest in not completing their degrees. Currently, there is much research on the challenges that Latinx first-generation students face in pursuing higher education but limited on the motivation to pursue and stay in college. This work explores what keeps Latinx driven to continue their education despite the challenges experienced. Factors such as college knowledge and adjustment to college will be addressed in …
Latinos: Breaking The Barrier Of College Education Completion, Wendolyn J. Martinez
Latinos: Breaking The Barrier Of College Education Completion, Wendolyn J. Martinez
2018 Symposium
After being met with disadvantage for years Latinos have begun to break away from stereotypes and reaching new highs in college enrollment as the group experiences reduced high school dropout rates. Despite the high rate of Latino college enrollment, low completion rates of bachelor’s and associate degree programs persist. The goal of this project is to identify the barriers Latinos experience while attending higher education, prompting them to drop out and suggest solutions to these problems. Through the analysis of data from scholarly sources and the U.S Census Bureau, conclusions are drawn on the reasons Latinos have such a low …
