Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Sarah Louise Ferguson
Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Sarah Louise Ferguson
LSU Master's Theses
Darkness on the Edge of Town focuses on a series of dioramas I created accompanied by audio and video. This thesis exhibition is based on a series of interviews I conducted with a friend who is a recovering opioid addict who has spent the majority of his life incarcerated for drug offenses. The American opioid epidemic currently looms large mostly because of the influx of drug abuse in middle class white communities. My subject is of Puerto Rican descent and represents the much harsher treatment of minority addicts by the criminal justice system. His personal story represents a deep yearning …
The Rhetoric Of The Opioid Crisis And Addiction To Prescription Pain Medicine, Rachel Kaplan
The Rhetoric Of The Opioid Crisis And Addiction To Prescription Pain Medicine, Rachel Kaplan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this historical moment, the United States is amidst an opioid crisis killing the young and the old; at least seventy-eight people die every day from an opioid-related overdose (Enomoto in Murthy III). Changing mindsets of the doctors who prescribe opioids is just as important as asking the patients who are prescribed them to demand an alternative medication. The different parties involved in the crisis all have a different agenda and their rhetorical bias is explored throughout this project. The pharmaceutical companies have launched aggressive marketing campaigns expressing the benefits of opioids and encouraged physicians to prescribe, the CDC has …

Becoming Your Broken Cisterns: F. Scott Fitzgerald's Short-Fiction Treatment Of Religion, Richard W. Halkyard
Becoming Your Broken Cisterns: F. Scott Fitzgerald's Short-Fiction Treatment Of Religion, Richard W. Halkyard
Graduate Theses
The intention of my thesis is to reorient the popular vantage points whereby the masses view — and pigeonhole — author F. Scott Fitzgerald. Literary critics and cursory readers alike oftentimes fail to see how the writer’s foundational Catholic upbringing, and therefore, a religious inclination informed his craft. While Fitzgerald was raised Catholic, few literary critics acknowledge the pattern of religious thematics and imagery Fitzgerald implemented throughout the course of his career. Among those select critics — including Joan Allen, Alice Hall Petry, and Edward Gillin — none argue for a positive relationship between Fitzgerald and the Christian God. I …
Policy Implications And Perceptions Of African American Men Who Used Ritalin As Children, Divine Ayivor
Policy Implications And Perceptions Of African American Men Who Used Ritalin As Children, Divine Ayivor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Even though there are high diagnosis rates of ADHD among young African American
men, policy makers and parents have largely viewed the use of Ritalin as a psychotrop
ic
drug that raises public health concerns. African American parents may be reluctant to
treat their children pharmacologically. Very few studies have fully explored the
perceptions of African American men
about the consequences of their
Ritalin
use
as

ldren. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of African
American men who used Ritalin as children
so that
policy makers

Ghetto Birds And Other Things That Lurk, Mary Frances Henn
Ghetto Birds And Other Things That Lurk, Mary Frances Henn
MSU Graduate Theses
This collection is comprised of poetry critically introduced by a narrative essay. The pieces included explore place, trauma, and the female experience: what modern domestic life looks like, what life looks like in the urban core, how substance abuse impacts familial relations, and especially, what it means to be female in relation to these things. Often, the intersection of these themes becomes central to a poem; the borders of these subjects blur, leading to overlap in the record of personal experiences and observations.
