This is the program for the Fall 2012 Brass and Percussion Ensembles concert, held on October 22, 2012, in the McBeth Recital Hall. The following groups performed: Trumpet Ensemble directed by Dr. Heather Thayer; the Trombone Ensemble directed by Dr. Justin Isenhour; the Percussion Ensemble directed by Dr. Ryan Lewis; and the Horn Ensemble directed by Dr. Heather Thayer.

In observing bands or orchestras at all levels of performance proficiency, very often it becomes apparent to the onlooker that certain sections of instruments tend to be made up of a greater number of either male or female performers. For instance, the percussion and trumpet sections of ensembles often tend to be predominately male (Steinberg, 2001). An Introductory Guide To Vibraphone: Four Idiomatic Practices And A Survey Of Pedagogical Material And Solo Literature, Brian Scott Cheesman

The Vibraphone is the most recent addition to the mallet percussion family. In the last sixty to seventy years, the vibraphone has emerged as a legitimate jazz, concert, and solo percussion instrument. The wealth of literature, both solo and pedagogical, is a testament to the instrument’s gain in popularity whether in a solo or ensemble setting. Since its creation in the early 1920s, composers, performers, and pedagogues within the jazz, classical, and percussion genres have contributed to the instrument’s rapid gain in popularity.

Bach On Marimba : A Case Study Using The Violin Sonata In A Minor (Bwv 1003), James Chong

Transcribing works from the violin repertoire for marimba presents a series of technical issues, which must be addressed before the work can be successfully performed on marimba. This dissertation focuses on addressing the main issues that arise in this transcription process, using Bach’s A minor violin sonata (BWV 1003) as a case study. The main areas of investigation are (i) articulation, (ii) arpeggiation, (iii) possibilities for harmonic expansion, and (iv) sustain. Within each of these four topics, discussion is made into a selection of techniques available to the marimbist in the search for a performance style that is both historically …
