La RepresentacióN Del Indio En La NovelíStica De José MaríA Arguedas, Teresa Gizzi Aug 2006

La RepresentacióN Del Indio En La NovelíStica De José MaríA Arguedas, Teresa Gizzi

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Mary Shelley And The Early Goddess, Anne Schreuder Aug 2006

Mary Shelley And The Early Goddess, Anne Schreuder

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

For my thesis, I intend to focus on elements of Greek idealism in Mary Shelley’s Valperga, Frankenstein, and The Last Man. I will define “classicism” and seek to understand the ideals of the ancients that are concerned with the assertion of a masculine identity and fear the interference of the female voice in the quest for that assertion. I will show how Mary Shelley’s revisionist history undermines the classical ideals of masculinity in the search for the lost feminine. I will use Shelley’s two plays, Proserpine and Midas to support my claim that Shelley is interested in revisionist history of …

"MíO Cid" Revisited From Middle Ages To Postmodernity : Freedom And Transgression In Medieval Structures Of Servitude, Alina Bengochea

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

“Writing Cricket Bats” : The Unsettling Intersections Of Art And Life In Tom Stoppard’S Travesties And The Real Thing, Bonnie Kinsey Dowd May 2006

“Writing Cricket Bats” : The Unsettling Intersections Of Art And Life In Tom Stoppard’S Travesties And The Real Thing, Bonnie Kinsey Dowd

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In both Travesties and The Real Thing, Tom Stoppard investigates the role of the artist in society and the connection of art to history, politics, reality, and emotion. Through his characters, Stoppard voices conflicting, but often equally credible, arguments regarding the various intersections of art with life to illustrate his contention that “there is no static viewpoint” of events (Chetta 133), in Stoppard’s own words: “There is no observer. There is no safe point around which everything takes its proper place, so that you see things flat and see how they relate to each other” (Hayman, Tom Stoppard 141).

Stoppard …

La Mujer Mirada : Una AproximacióN A La Mujer Vestida De Hombre En La Comedia Del Siglo De Oro EspañOl, Betty Sermeno

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

"A Word Can Make All The Differences" : Translating Caribbean Feminist Discourse And Simone Schwarz-Bart's Pluie Et Vent Sur TéLuméE Miracle, Stacey Lynn Diliberto

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

How is a literary text—and the culture it represents—translated? Is the translated text a hindrance to the unique voice of an author, or is it beneficial for the circulation of the text in a culture that is not the author’s own? Must the translator be an insider to the author’s culture, or can any translator take up the task of interpretation? This thesis seeks to investigate these questions by examining the English translation of Simone Schwarz - Bart’s Pluie et Vent Sur Télumée Miracle. Barbara Bray, the translator of Pluie et Vent, renames the book in English as The Bridge …

Music Therapy And Dynamics In Families Of Terminally Ill Mothers, Kimberly Light Febres May 2006

Music Therapy And Dynamics In Families Of Terminally Ill Mothers, Kimberly Light Febres

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis focuses on aspects and interactions related to communication and music therapy in family units with a terminally ill mother. Post-treatment analysis of music therapy with four terminally ill female patients and their families was used to study patterns in communication and explore how music therapy may serve to facilitate interaction amongst family members. All patients were mothers and familial issues pertaining to this role were explored.

In order to better support this population, it is important for music therapists to understand the various needs and dynamics of terminally ill patients and their families. In this thesis, physical and …

The Music Therapy Intern Working In End-Of-Life Care : A Study Of Personal Experience, Mary Delacy Kidwell May 2006

The Music Therapy Intern Working In End-Of-Life Care : A Study Of Personal Experience, Mary Delacy Kidwell

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

There is very little literature available on the personal experience of the music therapy intern, and not any specifically on the experience of the music therapy intern working in End-of-Life Care. Music therapy interns working with dying patients develop quite differently, as compared to those working with other populations. To provide music at the bedside of a dying patient is an extraordinary experience, one that seems to go beyond any level of preparedness. A survey examining the experiences of music therapy interns at the End-Of-Life Care was used to help participants share their experience about areas including: self-awareness, supervision, counseling …

El Juego Del Lenguaje : La ConfiguracióN Del "Yo" En La Narrativa De Norah Lange Y Rosa Chacel, Berta C. Roldan May 2006

El Juego Del Lenguaje : La ConfiguracióN Del "Yo" En La Narrativa De Norah Lange Y Rosa Chacel, Berta C. Roldan

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Labyrinths of the Language: Shaping the "I" in Norah Lange and Rosa Chacel's Narrative

Although the Avant-Garde movement spread internationally in the early 1900's, very few women in Spain and Latin America were recognized for their contributions to a new style of prose. The purpose of this thesis is to study the representation of the subject and the fragmentation of the "I" in the narrative of Norah Lange and Rosa Chacel. Both writers were iconoclastic in the use of new forms and influenced the way literature and the arts were perceived in their era. They marked a new beginning to …

Cartas Y Memorias Como RepresentacióN Humana Y Literaria De Federico GarcíA Lorca Y Pablo Neruda, Dalia Milagros Santiago

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Every writer has a history behind his work. Most of the time, his personal life becomes part of his literature. His life becomes transparent through his literary work as well as through his personal writings, in this case, in his personal letters to family members and friends and also in his memories. It is through these letters that we get to know the person, his life related to history as well as their worries of his literary performance towards society. Due to this, I have found imperative the need of the study of the letters of Federico García Lorca and …

Duchamp And Pragmatics, Kiam Loong Daniel Lai Jan 2006

Duchamp And Pragmatics, Kiam Loong Daniel Lai

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

There is a correspondence between the mechanism of visual communication in Duchamp’s art and the principles of pragmatics in linguistics. The process from Duchamp’s intended meaning encoded in his art to the correct interpretation on the part of the addressee is similar to the process in which intended meaning encoded in speech being accurately decoded by the addressee. This is because the correct interpretation in both processes involves inferences. Be it language or art, to fully understand the intended meaning of a statement, an addressee must first understand the natural meaning known as entailment; and subsequently uncover the unnatural, but …

Lillian Smith's Strange Fruit : An Examination Of The Alterical Dimensions, Racial Consciousness, And Silence Of The Southern Woman, Syrena Bothe Jan 2006

Lillian Smith's Strange Fruit : An Examination Of The Alterical Dimensions, Racial Consciousness, And Silence Of The Southern Woman, Syrena Bothe

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In the 1944 publication of Strange Fruit. Lillian Smith attempts to identify the contradictions between external racial hierarchy, social class, and female whiteness by identifying them first as internal struggles that affected a southerner’s external existence. This is, instead, mis-read as a catastrophic love story between a white boy, Tracy Deen, and a black girl, Non Anderson.

However, this struggle of racial consciousness is a motif and driving force that heavily weights the intentions and choices of both white and black people in Strange Fruit. It is breath and instinct that lives in each southern inhabitant, it is the air …

Third Wave Language In Bust And Bitch Magazine, Emily Hoeflinger Jan 2006

Third Wave Language In Bust And Bitch Magazine, Emily Hoeflinger

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Where does feminism fall in contemporary American culture? Has it lost its relevance as a result of waning interest in feminist politics? In today’s feminist troupe, a culture of inheritance has stepped into many of the advantages the Second Wave pushed so hard to acquire. What becomes the point of contention is the approach these inheritors now take to feminism or, more so, the perception of the Third Wave by its predecessors, as well as the persistent misrepresentation of feminism by mass culture. A great amount of speculation exists about the movement of feminism since the heyday of the Second …
