From The Social Margins To The Center: Lebanese Families Who Arrived In South Carolina Before 1950, Elizabeth Whitaker
From The Social Margins To The Center: Lebanese Families Who Arrived In South Carolina Before 1950, Elizabeth Whitaker
All Theses
The Lebanese families who arrived in South Carolina found themselves in a different environment than most had anticipated. Those who had spent time elsewhere in the U.S. found predominantly rural and predominantly Protestant South Carolina to be almost as alien as they or their parents had found the United States due partly to the religious differences and partly to the cultural differences between the Northeast, where most of them had lived for at least a few years after arriving in the United States, and the Southeast. Most of these new arrivals eventually found success and some degree of acceptance, but …

American Reeducation Of German Pows, 1943-1946., Pamela Croley
American Reeducation Of German Pows, 1943-1946., Pamela Croley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The United States held almost 500,000 enemy combatants within her borders during World War II. Out of those 500,000 men, 380,000 were from Nazi Germany. Nazi POWs were confined to camps built near small rural towns in almost every state. It was not something that was well known to the American public. Even less known was the American Military's effort, through reeducation, to introduce Hitler's soldiers to a new political ideology-democracy. This thesis will explore how the reeducation program was formed; examine the people, both German and American, who participated in it, and make a determination on whether or not …
Separation Of Church And State: A Diffusion Of Reason And Religion., Patricia Annettee Greenlee
Separation Of Church And State: A Diffusion Of Reason And Religion., Patricia Annettee Greenlee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The evolution of America's religious liberty was birthed by a separate church and state. As America strides into the twenty first century the origin of separation of church and state continues to be a heated topic of debate. Conservatives argue that America's version of separation of church and state was birthed by principles of Christian liberty. Liberals reject this idea maintaining that the evolution of a separate church and state in America was based on enlightened thinking that demanded rational men should have religious liberty. The best way to achieve this was by erecting a wall of separation between church …
The Life And Public Career Of Robert F. Kennedy., Daryl Anthony Carter
The Life And Public Career Of Robert F. Kennedy., Daryl Anthony Carter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There have been many notable politicians in the United States during the twentieth century. Some, like Teddy Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan, were known for their swagger and appeal to the common man. Others, like Bill Clinton and Franklin Roosevelt, were known for their charisma and intelligence. However, one in particular was known for caring, compassion, strength, and determination. Robert Francis Kennedy lived in interesting times, surrounded by large egos and near mythical figures. But Kennedy was arguably one of the most important figures of the last fifty years. The ideas and ideals that he espoused still resonate nearly forty years …
Monuments And Massacre: The Art Of Remembering, Lafe Gerald Conner
Monuments And Massacre: The Art Of Remembering, Lafe Gerald Conner
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Rain transformed the dusty trail outside our trailer into a highway of sediments speeding and settling. Inside the trailer I pulled on my boots and raincoat while my dad slipped into a larger version of his own. Then, with my two brothers, we embarked in puddle play. Aimed at impeding the torrent, we employed any object; rocks, branches, wood chips, even our own wet boots and hands. Eight years old, maybe nine and I knew nothing about erosion or sedimentation, only that rain brought the stream and the stream brought puddle play.
I hold this memory, feeling its grainy texture …
The Role And Effect Of Advertising On Women During World War Ii, Laura Elizabeth Francis
The Role And Effect Of Advertising On Women During World War Ii, Laura Elizabeth Francis
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Advertising had an overwhelming effect on women during World War II; many women were influenced by advertising in the media to behave a certain way, buy certain products, and also support the war effort in a variety of ways. In the 1940s while many American women’s husbands, fiances, boyfriends, brothers, and sons were going off to fight in the War abroad, many women were fighting a war of their own on the home front. While men could prove they were active patriotic citizens by fighting in the military and taking government positions, female’s roles were re-written to show what they …
Black Power In Green And White: Integration And Black Protest In Michigan State University Football, 1947-1972, John Matthew Smith
Black Power In Green And White: Integration And Black Protest In Michigan State University Football, 1947-1972, John Matthew Smith
Masters Theses
While southern college football teams remained all white until the late 1960s and early 1970s, Michigan State University head football coach Duffy Daugherty formed championship teams in 1965 and 1966 by recruiting the best southern black players. While coaches in the North recruited black athletes and played them regularly by the mid-1950s, no other coach took the risks Daugherty did to integrate his teams. Duffy Daugherty's path-breaking teams broke all the rules of integrated competition and forced southern schools to reconsider their stance on segregated college football.
The ground breaking integration of black athletes in the mid-1950s and 1960s under …

The relationship between student dispositions and content regarding historically marginalized cultures was studied. Research explored how the delivery by the teacher on challenging subjects would have a direct result on student dispositions and learning. The research supported the need to change the current approach of teaching United States history into a transformative model where students are challenged to think about history from different perspectives. Implications for curriculum delivery are discussed.

Relocating Segregation : The Pea Island Life-Saving Station, Jessica Caldwell
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study examines racial segregation through the lens of the first and only all African-American crew in the history of the United States Life Saving Service (L.S.S.), predecessor to the United States Coast Guard. The all-black Pea Island station, under Richard Etheridge’s leadership, remained the only L.S.S. station with any black surfmen from 1880 until WWII. This study will consider the geography of the station’s location on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the life of its keeper, Richard Etheridge, and the nature of the Life-Saving Service to show this segregated station provided some benefits to the men who served …

The Virginia War Department During The American Revolution, Thomas Gregory Tune
The Virginia War Department During The American Revolution, Thomas Gregory Tune
Master's Theses
This thesis will provide a comprehensive analysis of the Virginia War Office during the American Revolution. A study of the War Office must start with its origin and, therefore, with the legislation that created it. This thesis will explore the reasons for the creation of the War Office and its legislative evolution into one of the most powerful agencies in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It will also discuss the War Office's legislative demise near the end of the war as the Virginia General Assembly began to shrink the government in cost-saving measures.
The second part of this thesis will examine …

Dogs In A Village, Karen Porter
Dogs In A Village, Karen Porter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nearly all of the histories of Shays's Rebellion point to debt as the reason why farmers in western Massachusetts rose against the courts and the state government in the fall and winter of 1786-87. Recent scholarship demonstrates a new line of reasoning based on the tax records of those involved. The following thesis, a screenplay, offers a fictional telling of this insurgency. The story is told using language pulled from contemporary letters and documents and follows a line of causation pointing to inequitable state tax structure and poor representation as the provocation. The response that ensued was not a rebellion …

Birthing Washington: Objects, Memory, And The Creation Of A National Monument, Seth C. Bruggeman
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The National Park Service's (NPS) George Washington Birthplace National Monument has commemorated Washington and his life for over seventy-five years. For much of that time, the NPS worked closely with the memorial's progenitors, the 'ladies' of the Wakefield National Memorial Association (WNMA). Although equally committed to the preservation of Washington's legacy, these two groups clashed over questions of authenticity, historical authority, and proper commemorative strategy. This dissertation explores their relationship for what it reveals about the rise of public history in this country and Federal involvement therein.;We witness at Washington's birthplace a collision between old-order Colonial Revivalists (led for a …

Anglo -Spanish Rivalry And The Development Of The Colonial Southeast, 1670--1720, Timothy Paul Grady
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study investigates the role played by the rivalry between English Carolina and Spanish Florida in the history of the colonial Southeast from the mid-seventeenth century through the 1720s. It contends that, from standpoint of the local inhabitants, Native American and European, both the perceived and the actual threat that Spanish Florida and Carolina posed to one another was the dominant concern and motivation of the actions of both during the roughly fifty year period from the founding of Charleston to the final events of the Yamassee War. at the local level, government officials, Indian traders, Franciscan missionaries, the various …
Society Of Souls: Spirit, Friendship, And The Antebellum Reform Imagination, Robert Kent Nelson
Society Of Souls: Spirit, Friendship, And The Antebellum Reform Imagination, Robert Kent Nelson
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study explores the central role that a spiritualized friendship played in the thought and writings of antebellum reformers. It identifies a spiritual sensibility that was widely shared by many radical New England activists of the 1830s, 1840s, and 1850s regardless of their specific denominational beliefs, and argues that this sense of spirituality motivated them to become activists who labored to transform their society.;Specifically, this dissertation analyzes the work and writings of a variety of reformers who believed that spirit or soul could serve as a mechanism for leveling some of the most dominant cultural and institutional power hierarchies of …

"They Opened The Door Too Late": African Americans And Baseball, 1900-1947, Sarah L. Trembanis
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
During Jim Crow, the sport of baseball served as an important arena for African American resistance and negotiation. as a (mostly) black enterprise, the Negro Leagues functioned as part of a larger African American movement to establish black commercial ventures during segregation. Moreover, baseball's special status as the national pastime made it a significant public symbol for African American campaigns for integration and civil rights.;This dissertation attempts to interrogate the experience and significance of black baseball during Jim Crow during the first half of the twentieth century. Relying on newspapers, magazines, memoirs, biographies, and previously published oral interviews, this work …

Breaking With Tradition: Slave Literacy In Early Virginia, 1680--1780, Antonio T. Bly
Breaking With Tradition: Slave Literacy In Early Virginia, 1680--1780, Antonio T. Bly
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
"Breaking with Tradition" is a study of slave literacy in eighteenth-century British North America, the era of the First Great Awakening and the American Revolution. Instead of highlighting the work of a few northern slave authors (the present emphasis in African American literary history), it focuses on the relationship between slave education in colonial Virginia and the social and political circumstances in which slaves acquired a knowledge of letters. A social history of life in the slave quarters, the "great house," and in towns, "Breaking with Tradition" is at once a case study of slaves reading and writing in the …
The Beaten Path: A Cartographical And Historical Study Of The Southwest Trail In Clark County, Arkansas, Clinton R. Pumphrey
The Beaten Path: A Cartographical And Historical Study Of The Southwest Trail In Clark County, Arkansas, Clinton R. Pumphrey
Honors Theses
A road, taken on its own merit, may seem of little importance or significance in a history rich with riveting events and fascinating people. The monotony of travel is much more likely to prompt the question "are we there yet?" than one about a road's historical relevance. Most travelers simply do not have any interest in a road itself, but rather the points of interest that it serves to connect. Yet in the rush to move from place to place, people easily forget that the passage a road makes possible and the traffic it carries make the road just as …
