The Influence Of Initial Consonants On The Intrinsic Pitch Of High And Low Vowels In The Malay Dialect Spoken In Pathumthani Province, Thailand, Phanintra Teeranon

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

High vowels tend to have higher intrinsic F0 (pitch) than low vowels (e.g. Lehiste, 1970; Whalen and Levitt, 1995). Higher intrinsic F0 occurs on vowels which follow voiceless consonants, lower intrinsic F0 occurs on vowels which follow voiced consonants. When high vowels follow voiced consonants and low vowels follow voiceless consonants, the voicing of initial consonants has been found to counterbalance the intrinsic F0 value of high and low vowels. In other words, voiced consonants will lower F0 values of high vowels, and voiceless consonants will raise F0 values of low vowels to the extent that the average F0 of …

Understanding Necessity Causally, Puttawit Bunnag

Furthermore, the paper attempts to answer the following questions: Why are formal expositions essential to philosophically understanding problematic modal discourses?; What is the …

Out of their desire to reflect their female identity, these women writers of four different nationalities have concertedly rejected the long-running male literary tradition, in which male characters rule and dominate and, in turn, have created a female literary tradition in which their female characters not only assert a solid and secure place in the world but also …

The Validity Of The Rasa Literary Concept: An Approach To The Didactic Tale Of Phra Chaisuriya, Kusuma Raksamani

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The rasa (emotive aesthetics), one of the major theories of Sanskrit literary criticism, has been expounded and evaluated in many scholarly studies by Indian and other Sanskritists. Some of them maintain that since the rasa deals with the universalized human emotions, it has validity not only for Indian but for other literatures as well. The rasa can be applied to any kind of emotive poetry such as lyric, epic, drama and satire. However, in Thai literature an emotive definition of poetry encompasses a great variety of works. A question is then raised in this paper about whether the rasa can …

Comparative Literature: Recent Debates On An Imagined Discipline, Suradech Chotiudompant Jan 2006

Comparative Literature: Recent Debates On An Imagined Discipline, Suradech Chotiudompant

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Comparative literature is always a problematic discipline. Scholars from different countries and times such as Rene Wellek, Charles Bernheimer, Susan Bassnett, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, and Djelal Kadir, have attempted to delimit its scope. The variety of definitions have led to ensuing problems of shifting methodologies and frameworks. If, in the early twentieth century, a scholar tended to interrogate and theorise how one distinguished comparative literature, world literature, and general literature from one another, towards the end of that century and potentially continuing well into the new millennium, the parameters surrounding disciplinary formation have significantly changed, leading to a shift in …

Observing these difficulties in the Thai historic cities, this research explores how the desire for conservation and development can be balanced in two historic towns in Ayutthaya, a World Heritage site in Thailand. The Settlement Landscapes Of The Mangroves: The Indigenous Knowledge On Sustainability And Energy Conservation, Navanath Osiri

This paper is the summary of a full research project investigating the settlement landscapes in the mangroves. The Proxemic Study Of Dwelling: A Case Study Of Traditional Thai Houses At Ban Khlong Lamsali, Waricha Wongphyat

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

"Dwelling", as the heart of our existence, implies the establishment of a meaningful relationship between human and a given environment. In this respect, the private dwelling, the house, is a privileged entity for a phenomenological study of the intimate value of the lived space. Created from the inhabitants' experience accumulated through time, the lived space, or the existential space, not merely reveals the "here of life" of a dwelling place but also reflects the "microcultural pattern' of a society as a whole. Sadly, with the rapid growth of modernization and globalization, such characteristics of the traditional Thai dwelling, or ruan …
