Joseph Smith's Christology: After Two Hundred Years, Robert L. Millet Dec 2005

Joseph Smith's Christology: After Two Hundred Years, Robert L. Millet

BYU Studies Quarterly

During the last decade, a recurring question has been posed to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Is the church “changing?” In addition, it is asked, Is there some effort on the part of church leadership to have the church and its teachings, particularly those concerning Jesus Christ, become more acceptable to and thus more accepted by other Christians? The natural Latter-day Saint inclination is to react sharply that the church’s doctrines concerning Jesus Christ are intact and even eternal, that the doctrines of Joseph Smith’s day and the doctrines of our own day are one …

[Review Of The Book The Reception Of Luke And Acts In The Period Before Irenaeus: Looking For Luke In The Second Century, By A. Gregory], Rubén R. Dupertuis

Religion Faculty Research

In this book, a revision of the author's 2001 Oxford dissertation, Andrew Gregory has set for himself the daunting task of determining when we can definitively say that the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles are being used by later Christian authors. The greatest contribution of this book is that it treats in one study a broad range of texts and scholarly discussion on this question–according to the author, the first time this has been done.

Lost Christianities: The Battles For Scripture And The Faiths We Never Knew [Review Of The Book Lost Christianities: The Battles For Scripture And The Faiths We Never Knew By B. D. Ehrman], Rubén R. Dupertuis

Religion Faculty Research

This book is an introduction to the basic content of non-canonical early Christian texts, exploring them both as evidence for the diversity of early Christianity and for what they can say about the formation of the New Testament canon. It is divided into three sections. The first uses the concept of forgery to introduce a number of important extra-canonical texts (including Gospel of Peter, the Acts of Paul and Thecla, the Coptic Gospel of Thomas, and the Secret Gospel of Mark). The second section takes a closer look at some of the different forms of Christianity …

The Summaries Of Acts 2, 4, And 5 And Plato's Republic, Rubén R. Dupertuis Jan 2005

The Summaries Of Acts 2, 4, And 5 And Plato's Republic, Rubén R. Dupertuis

Religion Faculty Research

In earlier critical interpretation, the descriptions of the early Christian community of goods in the longer summaries of Acts 2:42–47 and 4:32–35, along with the related summary in Acts 5:12–16, often played a starring role in the quest for the sources underlying the narrative of Acts. In more recent interpretation, especially since the work of Martin Dibelius and Henry Cadbury, the summaries, or at least parts of them, are generally attributed to the author of Acts. Three other points also elicit general agreement. First, the summaries are commonly understood to be generalizations based on more specific traditions, such as the …

Infallible Texts And Righteous Interpretations: Don Quijote And Religious Fundamentalism, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 2005

Infallible Texts And Righteous Interpretations: Don Quijote And Religious Fundamentalism, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Religion in Don Quijote has been a frequent subject of inquiry over the past century. As a "vehicle for religious expression," to use Ziolkowski's terminology (1), Cervantes's masterpiece has been studied as an analogy of the relationship between religious faith and the world around it (Ziolkowski 8), as a manifestation of the historic clash between the secularization of the modern era and the waning medieval domination by "religious institutions and symbols" (Ziolkowski 9, citing Berger 107), as a vessel of both the spirit and the letter of selected pronouncements of the Council of Trent (Descouzis 479), as a text that …

On The Table-Servers: Ministry In The Assembly, Gordon Lathrop Jan 2005

On The Table-Servers: Ministry In The Assembly, Gordon Lathrop

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(excerpt) "Christianity came into existence at table. The earliest churches — that is, the earliest assemblies — seem to have continued the meal tradition of Jesus, the meal tradition with which the gospels are filled: 'Behold a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors and of sinners,' went one description of Jesus (Luke 7:34). Christian communities struggled to understand and maintain Jesus’ remarkable open commensality — his astonishing, God-signifying, religiously offensive and politically dangerous eating and drinking with the hoi polloi, his critique of the dining-room practice of the closed circle, his re-working of mealmeaning."

The Exodus Experiment: Theatrically Bridging The Cultural Gap, Kari Hatfield Jan 2005

The Exodus Experiment: Theatrically Bridging The Cultural Gap, Kari Hatfield

Theses and Dissertations

As a theatre professional and a practicing Christian, I have found it very difficult to bring my two worlds together. Theatre is a tool for education, discussion, and understanding. In my work on this project, I have explored the ways in which theatre can and cannot help us understand each other on the volatile subjects that divide our contemporary culture: homosexuality and religion. Twenty-nine people with various backgrounds and worldviews were interviewed for this project. The words from these interviews were used to create the beginnings of a script for a play that explores the issues of homosexuality, religion, and …

The Relationship Between The Papacy And The Jews In Twelfth-Century Rome: Papal Attitudes Toward Biblical Judaism And Contemporary European Jewry, Marie Therese Champagne Jan 2005

The Relationship Between The Papacy And The Jews In Twelfth-Century Rome: Papal Attitudes Toward Biblical Judaism And Contemporary European Jewry, Marie Therese Champagne

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The relationship of the papacy to the Jews in the Middle Ages, which had developed under the influences of Patristic writers, Roman law, and papal precedent, was marked in the twelfth century by toleration and increasing restriction, but also by papal protection. Between the First Crusade massacres of Jews and the restrictions and persecutions of the thirteenth century, the twelfth century is set apart as a unique era in the lives of European Jews. As Eugenius III (1145-1153) and Alexander III (1159-1181) extended their protection to the Jews of Rome and perhaps all of Christendom through the papal document Sicut …
