Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)
The WrightMath Enrichment Program, which enrolled its first participants in the fall 1994 quarter, is designed for high achieving at risk students from under-represented minority groups who attend Wright State University. Our program incorporates ideas from the University of Missouri at Kansas City Supplemental Instruction Program and Uri Treisman's research at the University of California at Berkeley. The program encourages commitment to success, cooperative learning and ethnic awareness.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)
The objective of this roundtable discussion is to examine the preparation of minority faculty as it relates to succeeding in an academic career. Although substantial research has been conducted on faculty preparation (Gaff, 1997; Garcia, 2000, Tice, Gaff, and Pruitt-Logan, 1998), conversations fall short when it comes to ongoing success development of faculty. This discussion will focus primarily on initiatives/plans to encourage the expansion and success of minority faculty at PWI's. For the purposes of this discussion, minority faculty is defined in terms of race/ethnic and gender.

Faced with a dramatic shift in population demographics and a 1000% increase in the number of English Language Learner elementary school children, four colleges and universities and seven public school districts have joined forces to increase the number minority, bilingual, and ESL endorsed teachers in northeast Nebraska. This panel- workshop session will discuss the project from multiple perspectives. Public school representatives reveal their challenges in serving a largely non-English speaking student body and their difficulties recruiting minority teachers to rural Nebraska. Using the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor as a case study this project highlights the 'usefulness' of race and ethnic courses in terms of factual evidence presentation from faculty-student relationships in the classroom and the broader influence in the corresponding ethnic communities. The globalization of hip-hop culture has created opportunities and challenges for students of color attending predominately White institutions. Overexposure to urban culture through music, fashion, movies, etc. combined with limited interaction with urban youth has created volatile and in some cases hostile environments on predominately White campuses. This presentation will examine the issue of racial prejudice both within and beyond the workplace from a psychological perspective. It will explore insights and illustrations from the field of psychology and related disciplines. Racism is an incubus that has haunted every culture in the United States since its inception. Today, aspects of the hip-hop genre embody that spirit by promoting self-hate through exploitation, misogyny, greed, and denigration of who Blacks are as a people. The hip-hop culture and its style of music has crossed all racial and culture barriers and has been deemed the music of the 21st century. Yet the hip-hop culture often cloaks itself with monolithic images very powerfully in television, magazines, and music videos.

This essay discusses how writing serves to prevent academic progress among students of color on predominantly white campuses. In particular, the work identifies writing as a strategy to maintain as hegemonic Eurocentric truth and knowledge against knowledge and truth challenges as they come from communities of color.
