SCRABBLE is a well-established word game in many countries and is closely connected with the English language, yet it does not seem to be used a lot by EFL/ESL teachers. This article provides explanations for such a paradox, and then outlines what could be done to turn the situation around. SCRABBLE deserves a place in most EFL/ESL classrooms, not only because of the linguistic worthiness of the game, but also because of its social, cultural, intellectual and international value.

The paper reports the evaluation of language functions used by Thai business people, with an emphasis on the language functions of disagreeing, apologizing, questioning, and expressing politeness. The subjects in the study were Thai business people enrolled in a graduate course in language functions for business communication offered at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce. They were trained how to use accurate and appropriate forms to function in various business interactions that prompt disagreeing, apologizing, questioning, and expressing various degrees of politeness in their communication tasks. This paper describes an innovation program that was implemented at the Muscat Intermediate Teacher Training College (MITTC) - Sultanate of Oman and included 35 student teachers of English. The program combined two modes of language improvement, which I have labelled here as 'General English' and 'Professional English' to help my student teachers develop their English language repertoire. This was achieved via the design and implementation of various language activities, which simultaneously consolidated various fundamental aspects of second language education.

This research investigated the use of the computer in developing reading abilities, including speed reading and reading comprehension. In this study, 99 students from the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy were trained in speed reading using a computer program in English. The program contained activities aimed at increasing reading speed such as eye movement, timed reading and paced reading. The performance of these students in speed reading, comprehension and general English proficiency pretests and post-tests was compared with that of students who did not take part in the training. กู่ฉินเป็นเครื่องดนตรีจีนโบราณที่ขงเบ้งใช้บรรเลง บนกำแพงเมืองจีนเพื่อลวงสุมาอี้ในวรรณคดีเรื่อง สามก๊ก กู่ฉินยังเป็นดนตรีประกอบการต่อสู้ฉากสำคัญในภาพยนตร์ จีนกำลังภายในเรื่อง HERO บทความวิจัยนี้ศึกษากู่ฉินที่ปรากฏในวรรณคดีจีน สมัยต่างๆ ตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณก่อนราชวงศ์ฉิน จนถึง ราชวงศ์ชิง รูปแบบของวรรณคดีที่นํามาศึกษา ได้แก่ บทกวี บทละคร นิยาย และบทความ นอกจากนี้ยัง ศึกษาบทเพลงกู่ฉินที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับวรรณคดีจีน ได้แก่ บทเพลงกู่ฉินที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจ หรือได้อิทธิพลมาจาก วรรณคดี และการนำบทกวีในวรรณคดีมาเป็นเนื้อร้องเพลงกู่ฉิน

ในนวนิยายเรื่อง "แวร์เธอร์ระทม" ผู้ประพันธ์ได้นำเสนอ ความทุกข์ของตัวละครในฐานะปัจเจกชน และความทุกข์ของตัวละครที่มีต่อสภาวะการดำรงอยู่ของตนเองที่แปลกแยกกับสังคม อย่างงดงามและเป็นเอกภาพกับรูปแบบสุนทรียะด้านการประพันธ์ ซึ่งตรงกับแนวคิดเรื่องความงามของอิมมานูเอล ค้านท์ (Immanuel Kant ) อันมุ่งเน้น "ความพึงพอใจอย่างไม่มุ่งผลประโยชน์" ของงาน ความงามของบทโศกของแวร์เธอร์เร้าอารมณ์สะเทือนใจ ศิลปะ และกระตุ้นอารมณ์ร่วมแก่ผู้อ่าน ทำให้ผู้อ่านสำนึกและประจักษ์ใน ชะตากรรมอันน่าเศร้าของมนุษย์ จึงก่อให้เกิดสุนทรียะแห่งการรับรสผลงานขึ้นอีกระดับหนึ่ง

จากการศึกษานวนิยายของกินเทอร์ กราสส์เรื่อง Katz und Maus และ Hundejahre และนวนิยายของชาติ กอบจิตติเรื่อง จนตรอก คําพิพากษา พันธุ์หมาบ้า หมาเน่าลอยน้ำ และเรื่อง เวลา ผู้วิจัยพบว่าสุนทรียศาสตร์แห่งความพ่ายแพ้ คือ ความจริง และความถูกต้องในสังคมที่ถูกนำเสนอโดยไม่บิดเบือน หรือปกปิด สภาพความพ่ายแพ้ของตัวละคร และความล้มเหลวของสังคมด้วย ความงาม นอกจากนี้ สุนทรียศาสตร์แห่งความพ่ายแพ้ที่ปรากฏ ในนวนิยาย ได้เปลี่ยนแปลงความคิดและรูปแบบมาจากทั้งบท ละครโศกนาฏกรรมกรีก และบทละครเอพิคทั้งในเรื่องตัวละครเอก ข้อบกพร่องของตัวละครและตอนจบของเรื่อง

"จี้แป๋ว"เป็นเรื่องสั้นที่ประสบความสําเร็จมากเรื่องหนึ่ง ของนักเขียนนามกาวและได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นวรรณกรรมชิ้นเอกของเวียดนาม เรื่องสั้นสะท้อนให้เห็นความเป็นอยู่และสภาพ จิตใจของชาวนาเวียดนามในสังคม "กึ่งศักดินาถึงอาณานิคม" และนามกาวได้เสนอประเด็นที่สําคัญและน่าสนใจยิ่งคือระบบศักดินา และอาณานิคมนั้นไม่ได้สร้างความทุกข์ยากให้แก่ประชาชนเวียด นามในเรื่องของปากท้องและความหิวโหยเท่านั้นแต่ยังได้ลิดรอน สิทธิความเป็นมนุษย์ของพวกเขาอีกด้วย

บทความฉบับนี้วิเคราะห์นวนิยายรางวัลวรรณกรรมสร้างสรรค์ยอดเยี่ยมแห่งอาเซียนประจำปีพุทธศักราช 2546 ของประเทศไทย ของเดือนวาด พิมวนา เรื่อง ช่างสำราญ โดยมุ่ง วิเคราะห์เนื้อหาและลักษณะการนำเสนอ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ช่างสำราญ เลือกเสนอเนื้อหาชีวิต ของกลุ่มคนในชุมชมห้องแถวที่มีประสบการณ์ชีวิตธรรมดาสามัญ อันเป็นประสบการณ์ที่ได้รับการประเมินค่าว่าน่าสนใจน้อยกว่า ประสบการณ์ชีวิตกลางแจ้งที่เข้มข้นหรือประสบการณ์ชีวิตกลางคืนที่โชกโชน แต่ผู้เขียนเห็นว่าการค้นหาประเด็นและวิธีการใน การนำเสนอเป็นสิ่งที่สร้างความหมายให้กับประสบการณ์สามัญเหล่านี้ได้

Pathamasambodhi is widespread in at least 5 countries in Southeast Asia. Hundreds of manuscripts and not less than 10 versions have been discovered.They are composed in 4 languages: Pāli, Mon, Cambodian and Tai, including Tai vernaculars: Siamese Thai, Northern Thai, Northeastern Thai, Lao, Tai Lue, and Tai Khoeun. The styles of composition dramatically vary between detailed enumeration and concision, prose and verse, translation in the style of nissaya and non-nissaya, single language and dual languages- Pāli and another language. The comparative study of the different versions, with emphasis on their content, reveals their relation and the evolution of Pathamasambodhi. The …

This paper discusses patterns of use and various functions of the frequent Thai expression mai pen rai, which can be roughly glossed as 'never mind'. The study is based on conversational data: face-to-face and by phone. Mai pen rai is a linguistic pattern requiring appropriate knowledge for its practical use in the culture of everyday human communication. The expression mai pen rai implies a pragmatic response to culture, and acts as a psychological mechanism reflecting the influence of Buddhism (Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, 1956; Phra Khantipalo, 1993; Phra Rajakittimoli, 1997) in a relaxed Thai lifestyle.
