Building Perfection: The Relationship Between Physical And Social Structures Of The Oneida Community, Janet White

Architectural history has traditionally focused on formal aesthetics and the monuments of a "high culture". This approach accedes no place in the canon to the buildings of the Oneida Community. While they tend to be nicely sited, spacious, and constructed of handsome materials, they are not architectural masterpieces. The main complex combines elements from a jumble of styles; it has awkward joints where the products of three different building campaigns were unskillfully linked; and its towers are either stubby and ungraceful or capped by overwrought roofs.

Bologna is a uniquely beautiful Italian city with broad, arcaded streets, richly textured brick and sandstone facades, majestic piazzas, public sculpture, high towers, and a cuisine to take time over. However, the previous historiographic emphasis upon Florence, Rome, and Venice has diverted attention from more fully preserved medieval and Renaissance cities such as Bologna, where urbanism—the urban fabric—takes precedence over individual buildings and architects, and where the urban context defines the architectural monument. This paper seeks to place the development of the American public library building in its social and historical context from 1876 to 1950 and to present a preliminary feminist analysis of the public library as a building type. Like all social constructs, architecture reflects the values and rituals of its makers. Too often in America we reduce architecture to its functional and technological components and do not recognize the social implications of the built environment we create and inhabit.
