Methodist Circuit-Riders In America, 1766-1844, William A. Powell Jr.
Master's Theses
The Methodist Episcopal Church became the largest religious denomination in the United States during the 1820's. Local expressions of the national body were established in nearly every American community. Methodist expansion was largely a result of the activity of circuitriders. These itinerants traveled and proclaimed the gospel to citizens, many of whom joined the Church and became part of a religious movement which influenced the l development of culture in the United States.
The traveling minister in the Methodist Church was noted for his self-sacrificing spirit. He endured hardships in the ministry which few men of the present age can …

The Life And Contributions Of Captain Dan Jones, Rex Leroy Christensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study is an examination of the contributions made by Captain Dan Jones, called the father of the Welsh Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a pioneer to the Great Basin. Jones was one of the all-time missionary greats, instrumental in converting over 5,000 Welsh people and their introduction into the Utah pioneer society. He operated a steamboat on the Mississippi for the Mormon Church and later a commercial boat on the Great Salt Lake for Brigham Young. Jones headed a steambot expedition in opposition to an attempted kidnapping of Joseph Smith in Illinois. The …

This article traces the early history of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, California, starting ca. 1867 with the Portolà Expedition. The expedition was the first to record the site where the botanic garden later came to be located, in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County. Successive changes in land ownership eventually led to the Bixby family purchasing the land in 1875. Susanna Bixby Bryant, the founder of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, acquired the land in 1925.

The Decline Of History, Rowan Cahill
The Decline Of History, Rowan Cahill
Rowan Cahill
Written at a time when the teaching of 'History' was declining in Australian secondary schools (1970s), this is a view from the classroom by a classroom teacher. The author trenchantly defends the place of 'History' as a subject in Secondary schools, and opposes its teaching by non-history trained teachers, as well as the introduction of 'thematic' approaches. Instead he defends a broad 'History' curriculum, the exploration of cause and effect, and for Senior students, their introduction to the notion of 'historiography'.
Mathematics In America: The First Hundred Years, Judith V. Grabiner
Mathematics In America: The First Hundred Years, Judith V. Grabiner
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
There are two main questions I shall discuss in this paper. First, why was American mathematics so weak from 1776 to 1876? Second, and much more important, how did what happened from 1776-1876 produce an American mathematics respectable by international standards by the end of the nineteenth century? We will see that the "weakness" -at least as measured by the paucity of great names- co-existed with the active building both of mathematics education and of a mathematical community which reached maturity in the 1890's.

Research outputs pre 2011
When Churchlands College of Advanced Education opened in February, 1972 the first students undertook a short course in West Australian history, with particular emphasis on discovery, settlement and the gold boom of the 1890's. The course has gradually expanded and Western Australian Readings is an attempt to compile a limited collection of source material to which students can refer.
