When Bird And Fish Fall In Love, Matthew C. Mackey
When Bird And Fish Fall In Love, Matthew C. Mackey
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A work of poetry that offers a new method of poetics. By examining translation as a means of understanding relationships, this work offers a nuanced manner for the writing and experience of poetry. When Bird and Fish Fall in Love is a close examination of language, relationships, translation, and the intimacy of conflation.
Witch Hazel Advent, The Story Of An Ozark Poet, Sarah Moore Chyrchel
Witch Hazel Advent, The Story Of An Ozark Poet, Sarah Moore Chyrchel
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this Master's thesis project was to document the life of my maternal step-grandfather, John Ross Rule, in a visually compelling manner. Using equipment provided by the Lemke Department of Journalism at the University of Arkansas, I shot and edited a half hour long documentary film comprised of interviews and footage of John at his home near Winslow, Arkansas. John is a talented poet, and segments of his poetry are woven throughout the film.
The inspiration for this project is deeply rooted in place: the remote farmstead in the Boston Mountains of northwestern Arkansas that my grandparents called …
All Aboard The Succulent Wave, Oscar William Oswald
All Aboard The Succulent Wave, Oscar William Oswald
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
All Aboard the Succulent Wave is a collection of poems written over the past three years. It is the product of major shifts in my faith and trust in language. The manuscript is divided into three parts: "The Staccato Monsoon," "Today / / / A Poetics," and "Elliptics." Each of these sections concerns a particular theme about my language, my god, and my soul.
I wrote many poems that used language to find god. In these poems, those designated by "/ / / A Poetics," I write about what is holy to me in the moment and about how the …
Wobble, Said The Hedgehog, Mary Elder
Wobble, Said The Hedgehog, Mary Elder
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
My thesis is called "Wobble, Said the Hedgehog." However, there are also things in it that are neither hedgehogs nor wobbly. These include, but are not limited to, the body, kingship, Catholicism, cats, mice, betrayal between friends, jam, alcohol, badgers, love and the military. There is less actual discussion of sex than one might expect. For the purposes of describing my project as an assembled whole, however, this prospectus will attempt to transcend "badgers" as a summary. (This is not to say that "badgers" isn't a useful signifier. It should be referred to almost as often as "Catholicism.")

The “Man Walks Outside Time Now”: Verbal Representations Of Photographic Images In The Poems Of Larry Levis, Lauren Miner
The “Man Walks Outside Time Now”: Verbal Representations Of Photographic Images In The Poems Of Larry Levis, Lauren Miner
Theses and Dissertations
The poet Larry Levis often employed ekphrasis as an elegiac device—particularly with his verbal descriptions of photographic images—to explore human suffering and reconcile feelings of loss. Through the ekphrastic mode, Levis could juxtapose otherwise disparate images, manipulating their temporal and spatial relationships, to achieve what he conceived an authentic portrait of the human experience. The poet, through his verbal descriptions of photographic images, does not try to evade the pain or joy of being human; instead, he confronts his grief directly and, in so doing, transcends that suffering to better understand himself and his own human position. This thesis analyzes …
Hurlement: Une Traduction Du Poeme « Howl», Emilie Arseneault
Hurlement: Une Traduction Du Poeme « Howl», Emilie Arseneault
Honors Theses
I imagine that many people might wonder what a translation of the poem "Howl" of the famous American poet Allen Ginsberg. For me, the reason is obvious. A French translation of this poem is could contribute to the wealth of French literature, certainly. But my main goal is to recognize one of the great artists who has influenced multiple movements and at least three generations of American. The French will thus have access to this poem and this artist, influenced by French literary and philosophical movements that have even created an epidemic in the English language. The French surrealist movement …

Through Other I'S: Las Otras, Brenda Nettles Riojas
Through Other I'S: Las Otras, Brenda Nettles Riojas
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The “I” speaks in each of the poems presented; but whose I? The collection explores the use of personae, and gives voice to “the other” I’s/las otras, women who came before us and those who walk among us. Sometimes in English, sometimes in Spanish, sometimes the voices cross between languages. Written primarily in free verse, the poems are ordered to allow the mingling of languages from the speakers on the page. Through other eyes, some of the characters revive the past, speak from the grave. They provide a glimpse into what lies beyond the “I.” We hear the …
The Genius Of A Crow: Poems, Michael Jon Levan Jr.
The Genius Of A Crow: Poems, Michael Jon Levan Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations
Every age has its troubles, and ours is no different. Military conflict, economic uncertainty, environmental threats, and other serious global concerns shape how many of us greet every new day. These issues, however, are unacknowledged in a growing segment of contemporary American poetry. Too often, some poets neglect what is outside them and instead turn to producing work that is so focused on the poet’s interior life that no one besides the poet him- or herself can possibly enter. But contemporary American poets can find an important influence in postwar Eastern European poets who have risen from one of the …
Dante Gabriel Rossetti And The Romance Of Loss, Jane N. Cooper
Dante Gabriel Rossetti And The Romance Of Loss, Jane N. Cooper
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
Through paired poems and paintings, Dante Gabriel Rossetti explored the nature of Love—both physical and spiritual—as made evident by distance or absence. Influenced early by his familiarity with Dante Alighieri and a confluence of changing social and artistic attitudes, Rossetti transformed the dialogue around him to a more personal internal conversation, revealed by pen and brush. This paper examines the dynamic of that pervasive thread in Rossetti’s work through a discussion of the influences upon the artist, the artist’s effect upon important figures of mid- to late nineteenth century England, and the important relationships that shaped his discourse. In addition, …
Heathens And How They're Made, Garret Crowe
Heathens And How They're Made, Garret Crowe
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis contains 23 poems with an introduction in which I explain how I craft my poetry. In the introduction, I use examples from both critical and creative sources to identify tools I utilize during the craft process of a poem. The subject matter of the poems within this thesis ranges from speakers pondering childhood moments to mature voices examining domestic relationships. Some of the poems may be considered confessional poetry as the works are immensely personal and the speaker is I, the writer. Other poems apply literary styles that are commonly associated with Dirty Realism and Southern Gothic.
Love Is Just A Word For The Last Body I'D Like To Keep Vigil Over, Robert Jagger
Love Is Just A Word For The Last Body I'D Like To Keep Vigil Over, Robert Jagger
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Love is Just a Word for the Last Body I'd Like to Keep Vigil Over is a collection of poetry that was composed during my time spent at UNLV. Comprised mostly of prose poems, it was heavily influenced by the works of Richard Hugo, Robert Coover, Joshua Marie Wilkinson and several French poets who are often categorized as being members of either the Symbolist or Decadent movement. At its best, the collection attempts to invoke a sense of Joseph Cornell's boxes--odd juxtapositions of everyday items and language that create new and uncertain circumstances. Unlike Cornell's boxes, however, the poems aren't …
About A Yellow Ball, Shannon Alice Salter
About A Yellow Ball, Shannon Alice Salter
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
These are poems made from many things: color, eggs, oranges, many kinds of seeds, leaves, wind, California, the desert, birds. They are things alive in the world and alive in my heart. I cannot take them out of the world, but from my heart I can have whatever appears on its surface. The language of steam.
They are poems that like to be at home.
California is my home and so is the Mojave (and so is every desert). I live in a valley about four hundred miles from the Pacific Ocean, in the city of Las Vegas. What better …
A Turkish Dictionary, Andrew Wessels
A Turkish Dictionary, Andrew Wessels
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The poems in this manuscript, A Turkish Dictionary, probe a number of related issues: What is the relationship between a word and its object? What is the connection between meaning in two different languages? How do we live in a city overwhelmed with history? What is necessary? How do we accept knowing that we cannot know? These and other questions constitute the investigative purpose of the manuscript as specifically and actively an exploration of the questions rather than an argument for a final, singular answer. Structurally, the manuscript uses two poetic forms: dictionary poems and prosaic poems. The dictionary poems …
An Examination Of The Compositional Style Of Dorothy Rudd Moore And Its Relationship To The Literary Influence Of Langston Hughes, Latoya Andriel Lain
An Examination Of The Compositional Style Of Dorothy Rudd Moore And Its Relationship To The Literary Influence Of Langston Hughes, Latoya Andriel Lain
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Dorothy Rudd Moore, born in 1940, grew up during a period in American history where many of the principles upon which this country was founded were denied to African - Americans. It was a time when black people in this country, amidst a struggle, were fighting for the basic human rights afforded to whites. In addition to protests, marches, and speeches, black artists used the power of artistic expression to communicate anger at the racial climate in America. Writers, dancers, actors, and musicians all used their various genres as platforms to speak out against inequality. Dorothy Rudd Moore and Langston …
Alexandria And The Construction Of Urban Experience, Sara L. Bacon
Alexandria And The Construction Of Urban Experience, Sara L. Bacon
Scripps Senior Theses
Early Ptolemaic Alexandria provides a unique perspective on cultural interactions during the Hellenistic Period. With this idea in mind, I have tracked the cultural affiliation of the city from its foundation through the early years of the Ptolemaic dynasty. In order to do this, both literary and archaeological evidence, including various foundation myths for the city, the poetry of Theocritus and Herodas, papyrological evidence as well as the city plan and archaeological remains of the Serapeum, were analyzed. Using this evidence, this thesis attempts to describe the cultural state of the ancient city and the surrounding area in its early …
Theo-Poetics: Figure And Metaphysics In The Thought Of Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Anne Carpenter
Theo-Poetics: Figure And Metaphysics In The Thought Of Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Anne Carpenter
Dissertations (1934 -)
Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905-1988) was a Swiss-Catholic theologian of great importance in the twentieth century. His formal education included a doctorate in literature, which resulted in a massive, three-volume work on the state of German literature and philosophy entitled Der Apokalypse der deutschen Seele (The Apocalypse of the German Soul) - and licentiates in both theology and philosophy. Throughout his life, von Balthasar continued to display a thoroughgoing interest in art and theology. With a background particularly attuned to this link, von Balthasar set out to "recover" the transcendental of beauty in theology, which he argued had been a …

More Than Just Nonsense Verse?: The Language Of Dr. Seuss And Children's Literacy, Nicole Hewes
More Than Just Nonsense Verse?: The Language Of Dr. Seuss And Children's Literacy, Nicole Hewes
Senior Scholar Papers
In this Senior Scholars project I wanted to demonstrate that Dr. Seuss books are much more than just nonsense verse. For the first part of my project, I familiarized myself with all of his texts and scrutinized his use of language in a textual analysis. By scrutinizing Geisel’s use of language and wordplay, I hoped to isolate some characteristics that make a Seuss book different from other types of stories and texts. The second part of my project was an empirical study that tested what influence reading a real Seuss text versus a fake Seuss text has on students’ performance …
A Poetics Of Space: Opening Up A World Through Vessel Metaphors In Modern And Contemporary Poetry, Lili Pariser
A Poetics Of Space: Opening Up A World Through Vessel Metaphors In Modern And Contemporary Poetry, Lili Pariser
Honors Papers
This project follows the strangely consistent fascination in modern and contemporary poetry with vessel objects. From Wallace Stevens' "jar [placed] in Tennessee," to "That vase" of Philip Larkin or James Merrill's "clear vase of dry leaves vibrating on and on," even so far back in literary history as the shapely "Grecian Urn" of John Keats' famous ode among numerous others, the genre is teeming with vessels. I argue that these kinds of objects open up distinctive possibilities for poetic exploration because of the unique way that they engage with space. Consequently, by using these objects as metaphors, poets are able …
The Impact Of Literacy Through Movement In A 3rd Grade Hispanic Classroom, Daniel Peregrino
The Impact Of Literacy Through Movement In A 3rd Grade Hispanic Classroom, Daniel Peregrino
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This case study examines the effects of a kinesthetic literacy-training program on the complexity of narrative production and performance on the Garfield Motivation to Read Survey in a group of four 3rd grade elementary students. The 3rd grade teacher attended a Literacy Through Movement workshop to learn a range of movement-based literacy activities and methods for the classroom. The LITMO program was then implemented as part of a language arts poetry module for 3 weeks in her classroom. Changes in four students' performance on the Garfield Survey and narrative samples were measured before and after the LITMO intervention. Results suggest …
The Dark Is Melting: Narrative Persona, Trauma And Communication In Sylvia Plath's Poetry, Jessica J. Feuerstein
The Dark Is Melting: Narrative Persona, Trauma And Communication In Sylvia Plath's Poetry, Jessica J. Feuerstein
ETD Archive
This thesis examines the poetry of Sylvia Plath to identify a new perspective that looks at the function of narrative voice in her poetry. This perspective identifies the ways Plath's narrator is given a distinct voice, separate from that of the poet herself. The narrative voice interacts with a listener, the audience, to express a traumatic experience and explores how Plath's narrators share their horrific internal worlds with the audience to make a direct connection to the audience. In past scholarship, Plath is figured as a confessional poet, and the speaker in her poems are treated as the personal confessions …

Cark, Broc Norman Rossell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A collection of poems with critical preface. The author expresses concern for responsibilities and obligations resulting from utterance and offers a means of reading poetry in light of such concerns. Lyric theory and the legacy of Language poetry with regards to the lyric are loci in a discussion of contemporary poetics. It analyzes the work of poets Tomaz Salamun and Lyn Hejinian, in relation to theorists Theodor Adorno and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, to articulate a poetics specific to the poems in the collection. The poetics is described via the literary and anthropological uses of metaphor, which are employed to unify text, …
Given: F(A Great Love + A Missing Body), Emily Anne Barnes
Given: F(A Great Love + A Missing Body), Emily Anne Barnes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Given: f(A great love + A missing body) is a collection of poems in four sections that takes love and mathematics at its core. The lyric and narrative poems navigate an affair between a female narrator and her lover. The math is positioned with the verse in the way an ekphrastic poem might be positioned next to the art upon which it is based. The connection and alienation of the form fractures the poem, but it also serves as a metaphor for the competing forces of two people in love. And the goal of each is pursuit of the sublime. …
