Although the experience of women in higher education has traditionally occupied a limited space in Canadian historiography, recent work by feminist and women's historians has uncovered a rich and complex field. The field is a relatively new one, less mature than in the United States and Britain, nevertheless historians are beginning to suggest new approaches to the history of women in Canadian universities. 1 Scholars have produced several institutional studies which analyze the historical experience of women at particular universities and which establish the groundwork for modifying our understanding the history of women in higher education in Canada.

When Mary Shelley referred to her first novel, Frankenstein, as "my hideous progeny," she could not have comprehended the full significance of her words. For while her phrase eloquently compares her creation of the text with Victor Frankenstein's creation of the monster, we, reading the novel today, are witness to the "hideous progeny" to which her own text has given rise. In Kenya, the majority of women in education occupy classroom teaching positions. Educational officers, in their hiring practices, appear to overlook women as resources, thereby depriving the schools of the skills and talents of potentially capable leaders. Students are also denied the role models of female leaders. This study investigates how difficult it is for women to secure professional careers in educational administration in Kenya.
