Every Man Crying Out: Elizabethan Anti-Catholic Pamphlets And The Birth Of English Anti-Papism, Carol Ellen Wheeler
Every Man Crying Out: Elizabethan Anti-Catholic Pamphlets And The Birth Of English Anti-Papism, Carol Ellen Wheeler
Dissertations and Theses
To the Englishmen of the sixteenth century the structure of the universe seemed clear and logical. God had created and ordered it in such a way that everyone and everything had a specific, permanent place which carried with it appropriate duties and responsibilities. Primary among these requirements was obedience to one's betters, up the Chain of Being, to God. Unity demanded uniformity; obedience held the universe together. Within this context, the excommunication of Elizabeth Tudor in 1570 both redefined and intensified the strain between the crown and the various religious groups in the realm. Catholics had become traitors, or at …

Spire And Tower: The History, Architecture And Art Of Two Norfolk, Virginia Churches, Judith L. Smith
Institute for the Humanities Theses
While St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and Epworth Methodist Episcopal Church are dissimilar in origin, religious practices, and architectural style, when taken together, their periods of construction in their respective revival styles span and define an important era in Norfolk, Virginia's urban history.
Original research in the sparse records of several Catholic parishes identifies the previously known name of the architect of St. Mary's church. The study also offers additional information on that church's stained glass window.
The author presents the heretofore scattered history of Epworth Church in chronological order. The study develops new information concerning …

The 93rd Division: A Victim Of Domestic Politics, 1938-1945, Robert F. Jefferson
The 93rd Division: A Victim Of Domestic Politics, 1938-1945, Robert F. Jefferson
History Theses & Dissertations
The 93rd Division was an all-Negro unit that served in World War II. The formation and deployment of the unit was not planned but was the result of the Roosevelt Administration's susceptibility to domestic pressure during World War II. The War Department's lack of a comprehensive policy concerning Negro troops led to the Company K debacle of 1944 which reduced the unit to a combat support role for the remainder of the Pacific war effort. Furthermore, the outfit's failures forced the Army to reassess its racial policies in the postwar era.
This study examines the War Department's manpower policies and …

Half A Memory : The Vietnam War In The American Mind, 1975-1985, Mark W. Jackley
Half A Memory : The Vietnam War In The American Mind, 1975-1985, Mark W. Jackley
Master's Theses
This study attempts to show how Americans in general remembered the Vietnam War from 1975 to 1985, the decade after it ended. A kind of social history, the study concentrates on the war as remembered in the popular realm, examining novels as well as nonfiction, poetry, plays, movies, articles in political journals, songs, memorials, public opinion polls and more. Most everything but academic history is discussed. The study notes how the war's political history was not much remembered; the warrior, not the war, became the focus of national memory. The study argues that personal memory predominated over political memory for …
Origins A Symphony For Orchestra, Thomas E. Haupt
Origins A Symphony For Orchestra, Thomas E. Haupt
Masters Theses
ORIGINS A SYMPHONY FOR ORCHESTRA is a three movement work composed entirely with an arbitrarily derived system of harmony and melody. AH three movements are based upon ten sovereign groupings of notes, each group displaying its own specific charactor of harmonic/melodic tension and release.
It is this harmonic structure, plus an Idee’ Fixe based on one of the groupings that binds the three movements together.
ORIGINS was written according to conventional symphonic outlines, but is strictly intended for an ensemble of high technical prowess. While it is a highly complex work, it is still designed to be relatively accessable to …
Variants On The Holiday Season, Gary Powell Nash
Variants On The Holiday Season, Gary Powell Nash
Masters Theses
Variants on the Holiday Season is a symphonic poem for full orchestra. This composition is based on five Christmas songs including three Medieval tunes, "Nowel Syng We Bothe Al and Son," "Riu Riu," and "Two French Dances," along with "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Deck the Halls." Most of the music is derived from motives, rhythms, harmonies, and interval patterns of the original songs. The harmonies employed are created from the modes of the original tunes. Although there is no program supporting this work, it is considered a symphonic poem because it incorporates chimes, glockenspiel and sleigh bells which …
The Myth Of Tereus And The Nightingale Motif In Classical And Medieval Literature And In The Works Of Chauce, Betty Vanderwielen
The Myth Of Tereus And The Nightingale Motif In Classical And Medieval Literature And In The Works Of Chauce, Betty Vanderwielen
Masters Theses
In the myth of Tereus a woman is metamorphosed into a nightingale, in which form she perpetually laments her killing of her son. An investigation into the use of the myth in classical literature ranging from Homer to Ovid shows that certain themes recur: truth reveals itself in a non-conventional manner, sorrow is paradoxically linked with joy, the victim is the perpetrator of her own suffering.
In the Middle Ages the nightingale motif is associated with joy rather than lament and connected with love (both lascivious and sacred). References to the nightingale seem to have little connection with the myth, …

The U.S. Army And The Development Of The Rok Army: 1945-1950, Charles M. Ayers
History Theses & Dissertations
When the Korean War began in June 1950, the South Korean Army was unprepared and was unable to cope with the forces from the North. This study seeks to determine whether the decisions made by the US Army as to the building of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army during the period from 1945 to 1950 were appropriate in regard to the political and strategic situation in the Korean peninsula. The study approaches the problem by examining us documents and other archival material concerning the Army's policies toward Korea, how these policies were developed and executed, and what effect they …
Reconstruction In Kemper County, Mississippi, Michael Brian Connolly
Reconstruction In Kemper County, Mississippi, Michael Brian Connolly
History Theses & Dissertations
Blacks were the passive victims in Kemper County, Mississippi, the scene of violence and murder in Reconstruction. The Ku Klux Klan, the Order of '76, and a continuing animosity between scalawag Radical Republicans and white-line Democrats were instrumental in perpetuating a frontier atmosphere wherein the pistol and Bowie knife were commonplace. Shooting or killing was an acceptable method of settling one's differences with another. Freedom and new rights for the majority black population of the county and seven years of Radical rule in the county provoked night-riding violence, murder and finally, the Mississippi Plan, successful revolution at the ballot box …
Party Politics During The Compromise Crisis: The Virginia Congressional Elections Of 1849 And 1851, Jodi Lee Bennett Koste
Party Politics During The Compromise Crisis: The Virginia Congressional Elections Of 1849 And 1851, Jodi Lee Bennett Koste
History Theses & Dissertations
The Second American Party System developed in Virginia from the factions contesting the presidency between 1824 and 1840. Following its formation, Virginia voters adopted party allegiances and regularly supported their party in the various local, state and national elections. These voting patterns began to change with the elections of the compromise crisis, the period between the presidential elections of 1848 and 1852, when the "politics of slavery" dominated every contest. Defense of the peculiar institution became paramount and party lines were disrupted as a result. Virginia's Whig congressional candidates, unable to present themselves as safe on the slavery question, were …
Gilka Machado And Adelia Prado:Two Brazilian Women Poets' Vision Of The Female Experience, Joyce Anne Carlson-Leavitt
Gilka Machado And Adelia Prado:Two Brazilian Women Poets' Vision Of The Female Experience, Joyce Anne Carlson-Leavitt
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
This study is a feminist analysis of Adélia Prado and Gilka Machado's use of imagery and themes to express their female point of view.
The work of these two poets resembles that of many contemporary English-speaking women poets. They draw spiritual and creative nourishment either from identification with nature or association with a community of women. They associate the spiritual with the mundane and the erotic, and each one enjoys her own body and its sensuality. They rework traditional myths into positive, empowering images for women. Like their feminist counterparts in the English-speaking world, both poets empower women by their …
The Congress Of Berlin Of 1878: Its Origins And Consequences, Kenneth Allen Shafer
The Congress Of Berlin Of 1878: Its Origins And Consequences, Kenneth Allen Shafer
Dissertations and Theses
Historians have expressed a variety of opinions concerning the true significance of the Congress of Berlin. While the 1878 meeting did not have to deal with questions as comprehensive as those discussed in Vienna in 1814-1815 or at Paris in 1856, the Congress of Berlin had great impact in its own right. While the Berlin meeting made decisions in order to reorganize the Balkans after years of instability and war, it also created a split in relations between the German Empire and Imperial Russia which would eventually drive the two powers towards conflict in "The Great War" in 1914.

Religious Belief, Salience, And Social Action: Are They Related?, Timothy R. Tuinstra
Religious Belief, Salience, And Social Action: Are They Related?, Timothy R. Tuinstra
Masters Theses
With the increasing size and social/political activity of theologically orthodox religious groups within the United States, research dealing with the relationship between orthodoxy and social action is necessary in better understanding the phenomena. Past research has been inadequate in that it has largely focused either on the clergy or, when using the laity, has only measured attitudes toward social action rather than participation in social action. This study measured social action participation among lay members drawn from three Grand Rapids area United Methodist Churches. A third variable, salience of religious belief, was also examined, which past research indicated could be …
Concerto For Euphonium And String Orchestra, Steven Dale Sudduth
Concerto For Euphonium And String Orchestra, Steven Dale Sudduth
Masters Theses
The purpose of this concerto is to add substantial literature to the limited repertoire written for euphonium. Each of the three movements explores a different medium of music. The first movement is strictly developmental material based on a five-note motive taken from the end of an ascending melodic minor scale. The second movement uses an unusual five-voice passacaglia. The last movement is a cadenza shared by both the solo euphonium and the string orchestra with both parts having equal importance. Characteristic of all three movements is the blending of the voice ranges and the use of complex rhythms.

ln mid-1988, Brigham Young University received a high-quality collection of photographic glass plates made by Edith Irvine at the tum of the century. The plates, her camera and other photographic equipment, and miscellaneous publications were donated to BYU by her nephew, Jim Irvine.
When the plates arrived and the Archives Photolab had them proofed, we realized thal not only were the San Francisco earthquake/ fire and other areas of California history recorded, but we had, in fact, the work of an outstanding photographer. As we compared the proofs with the work of other photographers who handled similar subjects, we called …
Signals Intelligence In World War Ii Ultra And The Air War In Europe, Demetrio J. Perez
Signals Intelligence In World War Ii Ultra And The Air War In Europe, Demetrio J. Perez
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
(First paragraph) In recent years the study of military intelligence, particularly when viewed from a historical context, has acquired new significance. As military historians attempt to find a correlation between wartime events and the intelligence activities supporting those events, many serious works in this field have emerged. Some accounts of World War II military intelligence deal with the subject in terms of its benefits to the field commander. Others take a more extreme view and argue that major wartime successes resulted more from good intelligence than from good leadership.

Figurative Sculpture And Drawing, A Sumation Of A Year's Work, Matthew Burke
Senior Scholar Papers
I pursued the senior scholar project under the title and thought, Figurative Sculpture and Drawing. While studying sculpture and drawing, I spent time coming to know their basic languages and exploring a variety of media in each. Throughout the year, I worked with a figurative subject, addressing ideas proposed last fall; including sculptural elements like volume, mass, line, and balance; and various drawing techniques. I set up the proposal within a loose framework which allowed the project to evolve as I pursued the work. It also encouraged me to think freely and without reservation, because I was not bound to …
