René Lalique: A Biographical And Stylistic Analysis Of Two Areas Of Influence - Classical And Japanese Art, Judith Gayle Booth
René Lalique: A Biographical And Stylistic Analysis Of Two Areas Of Influence - Classical And Japanese Art, Judith Gayle Booth
Art & Art History ETDs
One of the outstanding artists of the Art Nouveau period was the French jeweler René Lalique. Despite the designation of Lalique as "les plus ropresentatif de l 'Art Nouve.1u" very little research has been done on him or the sources of his unusual jewelry. The dual purpose of this study is to establish a biography of Lalique and present a stylistic analysis of two of his sources: Classical and Japanese art. It is hoped that an analysis of the career and sources of this major figure will aid in producing a deeper understanding of the French Art Nouveau movement.

18th Century Political Satire As Exemplified By Jonathan Swift Through "Gulliver's Travels", Carol Hargis
18th Century Political Satire As Exemplified By Jonathan Swift Through "Gulliver's Travels", Carol Hargis
Honors Theses
During the seventy-eight years of Jonathan Swift's life, from 1667 to 1745, English satire was in its heyday. The stinging bit of the pen became recognized as one of the strongest political weapons, and those who possessed the natural gift of creating this weapon were sought high and low by those who desired to sway public opinion. There are really three main reasons why this period, in particular, was an age of satire. "First, it was a time of radically changing values, when intensely held convictions were in conflict with each other, and a new world order was emerging. Second, …
A Discussion And Modern Edition Of Some Works From Walter Porter's Madrigales And Ayres (1632), Linda Dobbs Jones
A Discussion And Modern Edition Of Some Works From Walter Porter's Madrigales And Ayres (1632), Linda Dobbs Jones
Masters Theses
Walter Porter (1588 or 1595-1659) was an important composer as the dawn of the Baroque broke over England. A small amount of scholarly work concerning his life and music has already been done. Five pieces from Porter's Madrigales and Ayres (1632) have been published in modern transcriptions. The supplement to this thesis contains modern transcriptions of three additional works from Madrigales and Ayres.
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss at length and in detail some of the works in Madrigales and Ayres. Five selections--the three in the thesis supplement and two edited by Ian Spink--provide a broad representative …

Close Communion, Stephen Bartelt
Close Communion, Stephen Bartelt
Master of Divinity Thesis
The scope of-this study, rather, is to see where the Lutheran church has stood on the practice, as well as its reasons for standing where it has. Within these limits, furthermore, no claim is laid to the comprehensiveness of the treatment. The material presented is selective. The excursion into the practice of the early church was included for two reasons. First, the study Eucharist and Church Fellowship in the First Four Centuries by Werner Elert indicates that the practice of closed communion was maintained in the early church for some of the same reasons it was practiced among Lutherans. Secondly, …
An Evaluation Of The "Affirming Rural Mission" Workshop As A Vital Part Of The Preparation Of Lutheran Pastors For The Town And Country Ministry, Wilbur Gehrke
Master of Divinity Thesis
The purpose of this paper, first of all, is to examine the many problems faced by the people living in town and country communities. By citing various authorities on the rural church, I will demonstrate how these problems also affect the church in town and country.
Secondly, I will discuss the need of a more specialized training for ministerial candidates for the town and country ministry. My research for this section included a study of the placement of ministerial candidates of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod between 1962 and 1967 by Allen Nauss. I also studied the placement of the 1970 …
[Mythoi (Romanized Form)] And [Genealogiai (Romanized Form)] In The Pastoral Epistles : A Reappraisal, Dale Banke
[Mythoi (Romanized Form)] And [Genealogiai (Romanized Form)] In The Pastoral Epistles : A Reappraisal, Dale Banke
Bachelor of Divinity
This paper is a tentative reappraisal of the nature of the μυ̑θοι and δενεαλοδίαι as these reflect a portion of the heresy combatted in the Pastorals. It is not intended to be an investigation of the entire heresy, much less the complete gamut of exhortation which the Epistles contain. This might appear to pose a false separation, since the wider contexts of the passages that include mention of the μυ̑θοι and δενεαλοδίαι seem to draw in much of the polemic and even some of the advice concerning early church order contained in these letters. Nonetheless, only those aspects of the …
The Cluniac Reform, 910-1157, With Special Emphasis On The Development Of The Cluniac Order, Wallace Behrhorst
The Cluniac Reform, 910-1157, With Special Emphasis On The Development Of The Cluniac Order, Wallace Behrhorst
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this paper is to give the history of the development of the monastery of Cluny with special emphasis on the development of the Cluniacs as an Order. For that reason .the paper will not cover the entire fie1d of Cluniac history and influence. To give a complete study of the topic would involve a study of fields beyond the scope and purpose of the present work. The author would propose other phases that would prove quite fruitful for further work.

The Rise And Fall Of Army Preeminence In Cuba, 1868-1958, Louis A. Pérez
The Rise And Fall Of Army Preeminence In Cuba, 1868-1958, Louis A. Pérez
History ETDs
This is a study of the emergence of military hegemony in twentieth century Cuba, The contours of the Republic's history offers a sharply defined periodization within which to study army ascendancy. More specifically, the island entered nationhood without an army; within little more than three decades, the military institution exercised unchallenged national authority. Thirty years later the armed forces collapsed.
The Cuban army emerged initially as a military response to the problem of political instability. In the course of two armed interventions (1898-1902 and 1906-1909), United States military and political administrators saw in the Cuban armed forces an effective agency …

The Aesthetic Of The Aveant-Garde In Music And Its Reflection By Some Works In Source: Music Of The Avant-Garde, Dennis Earle Jones
Masters Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the aesthetic within which avant-garde musicians are composing and show the reflection of this aesthetic in selected avant-garde works. Writings by and about avant-garde composers and about their works were collected and collated. Writings about the avant-garde in artistic disciplines other than music were also examined. From these writings was distilled, in the first chapter of the thesis, an elucidation and summarization of the aesthetic of the avant-garde in music.
Various compositions printed in Source: Music of the Avant-Garde were selected for examination. In the second chapter, exegeses of the works …

Plato's Polemic Against Poetry As Paideia, Howard Trusch
Plato's Polemic Against Poetry As Paideia, Howard Trusch
Philosophy ETDs
Plato, supposedly the father of Western philosophy, has often been presented by certain academicians in an unfavorable light. Although philosophers for the past twenty-five centuries have been writing commentaries about problems that were initially raised by Plato, something of a caricature of the man has been created. For Plato, although acknowledged as a literary genius for immortalizing Socrates, has also been ridiculed for making what seemed to be foolish remarks about the Greek poets and their poetry. His remarks about poetry, namely, that it is simply imitation, presenting only images and changing appearances and representing opinion and not knowledge, have …

The End Of The Porfiriato: The Collapse Of The Diaz Government, 1910-1911, Louis James Secrest
The End Of The Porfiriato: The Collapse Of The Diaz Government, 1910-1911, Louis James Secrest
History ETDs
In the sixty years which have elapsed since the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution, the causes for that great upheaval have been blurred by both time and misleading interpretations. The lists of grievances against the Diaz government are not fully applicable as either reasons for the revolution or causes for its ultimate success. Equally misunderstood is the position of the two chief characters in this drama. The old dictator has been overvillified by generations seeking to justify both his rejection and the terrible price which the nation ultimately paid for the revolution. Similarly, Francisco Madero has been exalted to a …
Recent Developments In Representational Painting, William Arthur Richards
Recent Developments In Representational Painting, William Arthur Richards
Art & Art History ETDs
Continuing since its eminence in the High Renaissance during the Fifteenth Century in Europe, representation had been the predominant mode of painting until the early decades of the Twentieth Century. This form also has firm foundations in America's artistic heritage. The progress and momentum of realistic painting, however, was to a large extent eclipsed during the late 1940's and 1950's by non-objective painting, particularly Abstract Expressionism. Unexpectedly the recent decade has seen numerous artists who have shown a renewed interest in representation as a basis for painting.
This study surveys the productions of these painters, probinR into their artistic ambitions, …
Israel And The Nations: The Mission Motif In The Old Testament With Reference To The Yahwistic Passages Of The Pentateuch, To Deutero-Isaiah And To The Book Of Jonah, Arockiam Rajaian
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The object of this study is to investigate the mission motif in the life and thought of the people of Israel in three different periods in the nation's history, namely, the early monarchical period, the exilic period, and the post-exilic period. The inquiry seeks to determine whether or not Israel had a mission to the gentile nations during the Old Testament period, the nature of that mission, and the ways in which that mission was to be carried out. An attempt will also be made to discern the difference in emphasis in the three different periods and how the situations …

Case Relations Of The Two Part Verb In English, Lester Gould Woody
Case Relations Of The Two Part Verb In English, Lester Gould Woody
Master's Theses
This paper attempts to explore one relatively small phenomenon of language. Linguistics is what might be thought of as a discipline in its infancy. Men have studied language for thousands of years: Dionysius Thrax of Alexandria codified the grammar of Greek in the second century B.C. But it has been only in the last thirty to forty years that scholars have studied language as it is spoken, as the living tool for symbolization that more than anything else distinguishes man from the lower animals. Linguists try to describe and to explain language, not to prescribe how it should be used. …

Alejo Carpentier : CivilizacióN Y Barbarie, MaríA Luisa P. ValdéS
Master's Theses
Ornamentation Of Italian Vocal Music Of The Eighteenth Century According To Pietro Francesco Tosi And Giovanni Battista Mancini, Beverly Ann Brandon
Ornamentation Of Italian Vocal Music Of The Eighteenth Century According To Pietro Francesco Tosi And Giovanni Battista Mancini, Beverly Ann Brandon
Theses and Dissertations
The acclaim and recognition attributed to the musical performers of the eighteenth century are reflected in the title Bel Canto ascribed to this period. The contemporary musical scene reveals performances attempting to perpetuate the virtuosity of the performers of this period and to recapture their style. Unfortunately, the aura of legend and mystery surrounding the performance of music of this period frequently leads to confusion and frustration of both teacher and performer rather than to understanding. This study addresses itself to that problem.
Tosi and Mancini were active participants in this period and their theory, technique of performance, and pedagogical …

Experiments In The Decorative Process Of Salt-Glazing, James A. Thornsbury
All Master's Theses
It is the purpose of this study to explore the process of salt-glazing and to develop a representative range of colored salt glazes by the application of soluble and insoluble metallic salts to the surface of the clay bodies. Varying percentages of clay forming constituents and metallic salts were tested to determine their effects on the range and characteristics of the colors obtained, and the ability of the clay body to take a salt-glaze. Firing techniques, kiln atmosphere control, and salting procedures were studied to determine their effects on the color of both clay and glaze, the ability of the …

The Use Of The Trombone In The Orchestra, Joe Kirby
The Use Of The Trombone In The Orchestra, Joe Kirby
Honors Theses
The trombone, perhaps the earliest of the instruments i contemporary orchestral use to develop and retain a fundamental regularity of form, is based in principle upon the utilization of a telescopic slide in the production of chromatic tones.
The characteristics of the construction of a trombone are basically, and broadly, the same as for the modern trumpet: A mainly cylindrical body-tube, narrow in relations to its length; a bell section expanding in a gentle curve to a wide terminal flare; and a deep mouthpiece with a well-developed throat. The essential difference between the two instruments lies in a different arrangement …
