Trends In The Treatment Of Women In Fiction, 1890-1910, Gertrude M. Richards Nov 1947

Trends In The Treatment Of Women In Fiction, 1890-1910, Gertrude M. Richards

English Language and Literature ETDs

This thesis proposes to examine six novels of the period 1890-1910 for evidence of new trends in the treatment of women in fiction and for signs of social criticism. The novels chosen are major works of representative British and American realists and naturalists. The authors to be considered, Thomas Hardy, Stephen Crane, George Moore, George Gissing, Theodore Dreiser, and Arnold Bennett, were writers who, in varying degrees, came under the influence of the Continental writers who were the cause of the aforementioned controversy.

Methodism In Albuquerque, John W. Hood Nov 1947

Methodism In Albuquerque, John W. Hood

History ETDs

The advance of Anglo-American culture into New Mexico brought with it religious institutions in the same manner and through the same agencies by which they had been introduced in to all areas which had come under control of the United States Government. In few instances, however, had Protestantism found a more difficult field than in New Mexico. For three hundred years the religious needs of people had been cared for by the Roman Catholic Church.

St. Augustine's Theology Of Grace, John Van Lierop Nov 1947

St. Augustine's Theology Of Grace, John Van Lierop

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

As a result of my study it is my conv1·ction that Grace is the heart of the Gospel - and that with all the talk about Ecumenical Christianity today, I believe it will be hopeless to strive for one great "World Church" unless there is first an agreement and unity about the Theology of Grace, which is the foundation-stone of all Theology.

The Lutheran Army Chaplain, Walther A. Huchthausen Oct 1947

The Lutheran Army Chaplain, Walther A. Huchthausen

Bachelor of Divinity

To describe adequately the Lutheran Army chaplain is a little more difficult. Although all the material mentioned would apply to him in a general way, other factors need to be brought into the picture which are not given expression in any of the literature that has been produced about the chaplain and his work. The doctrinal position of our Church, its polity, its missionary character, and its devotion to the Holy Scriptures as the only norm of doctrine and rule of life are all matters which affect the status of the Lutheran Army chaplain, emphasize his need, and tend to …

Thomas Wolfe: Critic Of America, Pat E. Kilburn Aug 1947

Thomas Wolfe: Critic Of America, Pat E. Kilburn

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this study is to search out in the works of Thomas Wolfe his criticism on a number of subjects which formed the major interests of his life; I shall present his views on these subjects by a selection of quotations or summaries of the longer quotations, together with an examination of his treatment of certain scenes and characters wherein such criticism is implicit. At the end of each chapter I shall draw conclusions and summarize his beliefs on each subject, and finally, at the end of the thesis, I hall summarize the conclusions and estimate the sum …

Development Of A Proposed Course Of Study In American History For The Senior High School, Floyd Gagnon Aug 1947

Development Of A Proposed Course Of Study In American History For The Senior High School, Floyd Gagnon

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

I. Importance and Statement of the Problem

During the past fifty years secondary schools have made rapid advances both in enrollments and in the curriculum. In 1890 these schools were still the schools of the few, even though their enrollments had begun to grow rapidly. The high schools have continued their rapid growth until today today they present an extremely wide range of individual differences in such areas as interests, abilities and needs. Of the millions of students attending these schools today, probably six out of every seven will never attend college. It is thus apparent that …

The Legal Bases Of The Nuremberg Trial Of German Leaders, Richard Harrison Doughty Aug 1947

The Legal Bases Of The Nuremberg Trial Of German Leaders, Richard Harrison Doughty

Masters Theses

Preface: The purpose of this study is to examine the legal justification for the trial held at Nuremberg, Germany, of leading German Nazis. The wisdom of the trial, its possible future effects, its fairness or unfairness are not primarily the concern of this thesis. An exhaustive study of these questions would require a much more ambitious effort than this one proposes to be. Here the question is--did there exist before the creation of the Charter of the Tribunal, recognized international law on which each of the counts of the Indictment against the Nazis could properly be based?

Early in my …

Hawthorne's Multiple Choice In Symbolism, Helen R. Haight Jul 1947

Hawthorne's Multiple Choice In Symbolism, Helen R. Haight

English Language and Literature ETDs

Among Hawthorne critics, only Matthiessen, Winters, and Higginson have made comment on the multiple choice technique employed by Hawthorne in his presentation of the symbol. Matthissen recognizes its potentialities; Winters condemns it unmercifully; and T.W. Higginson has written an article in which he suggested that the device "was perhaps borrowed by Austin's Peter Rug." The multiple choice technique, or, as Winters terms it, the formula of alternative possibilities, consists of showing not only one correspondence between the symbol and the thing it symbolizes but several, and giving the reader a choice of interpretations. Since these three notable critics have …

Life And Writings Of Mary Hayden Green Pike (1824-1908), Rachel Reed Griffin Jul 1947

Life And Writings Of Mary Hayden Green Pike (1824-1908), Rachel Reed Griffin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although sketches of the life of Mary Hayden Green Pike appear in Appletons1 Cyclopaedia of American Biography and in the Dictionary of American Biography, an extended study of her life and works has not been written. Whatever the cause of her obscurity, her popularity as a novelist of the "feminine fifties," her enthusiasm for the abolitionist cause, and her value as a propagandist seem to merit more than literary oblivion.

Mary Hayden Green Pike, a pre-Civil War novelist of Calais, Maine, was one of the more popular writers to follow in the wake of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Deeply concerned with …

The Relations Between The English And The Scottish Reformations, Carl Napier Jr Jun 1947

The Relations Between The English And The Scottish Reformations, Carl Napier Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the writer's original investigation was to find out what influences and connections existed between the two Reformations. The purpose of this study is to show that before Henry VIII English efforts at union were almost wholly political. At least there is no mention of religious-political parties. War and conciliation were the diplomatic weapons. After Henry's break with the Pope by the Act of Supremacy in 1534 and to 1707 when the final union of the crowns took place political and religious relations became closely entwined. Henry and his successors, particularly Elizabeth, used religion in fostering the political …

Thomas Hood : Poet, Social Thinker, Comedian, Ernest W. Mooney Jr Jun 1947

Thomas Hood : Poet, Social Thinker, Comedian, Ernest W. Mooney Jr

Master's Theses

Although Thomas Hood lived an uneventful and somewhat undramatic life, it was not entirely fruitless. His unparalleled misfortune in health and economy was scarcely offset by a felicitous family life; but his poetry--some inane, some mediocre, some excellent--balanced an otherwise pathetic existence. There has been no conscious attempt in this paper to present Thomas as an undiscovered genius. His works and his life have been evaluated for their peculiar merit alone, but a study of those has revealed points hitherto vague and misunderstood as well as forgotten.

As a writer of unmitigated fun, Thomas Hood is hardly excelled. Where he …

Modern Women Poets Of Brazil, Marie Pope Wallis Jun 1947

Modern Women Poets Of Brazil, Marie Pope Wallis

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This study was written to introduce the poetry of Brazil's leading women poets to the English-speaking world. Brazilian literature itself is as little known as the Portuguese language in which it is written. Brazilian poetry as a whole has not been widely evaluated. The poetry of Brazilian women, in particular, is practically unknown to the Brazilian as well as to the English-speaking public.

There were four criteria for the selection of these particular five living women poets. They were chosen on the basis of volume of published works. Several poetesses of promise had to be omitted because their publications were …

Haniel Long And His Work, Robert Burlingame May 1947

Haniel Long And His Work, Robert Burlingame

English Language and Literature ETDs

The prose and poetry of Haniel Long, a contemporary writer now living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will be the subject of this thesis, which will consider the sources of Long's work, its nature, its place in American literature, and the failure of critics to recognize its importance and significance in contemporary literature. Biographical details will be related to the poet's work, in an effort to bring into clear focus his working methods, his technical resources, and his literary ideas. The thesis, however, will not restrict itself entirely to critical analysis; rather it will combine criticism with appreciation, endeavoring to …

The Three Nephites: The Substance And Significance Of The Legend In Folklore, Hector Lee May 1947

The Three Nephites: The Substance And Significance Of The Legend In Folklore, Hector Lee

English Language and Literature ETDs

Until quite recently, folklore in the United States has been a study for scholars who were willing to work without encouragement or very much financial support. American anthropologists have applied their discipline to Indian lore and show bounteous returns; literary scholars and musicologists have collected and studied ballads in various parts of America and have added to our knowledge of what and how the people sing. More recently, various regions of our country have published collections -- mostly following the stimulus of the WPA -- and the result has been a nation-wide interest in the things people like to talk …

An Evaluation Of The Nineteeth Century English Hymn Tune For American Lutheran Worship, Elmer N. Witt May 1947

An Evaluation Of The Nineteeth Century English Hymn Tune For American Lutheran Worship, Elmer N. Witt

Bachelor of Divinity

Lutheran hymnals continue to increase in size and in choice of hymn tunes. A brief study of The Lutheran Hymnal (1941) of the Missouri Synod shows that the composers of the 380 tunes of the hymnal come in the main from three countries: 18 from America, 59 from England, and 58 from Germany. This trend is borne out in the other Lutheran hymnals published in America during the first 40 years of this century, to perhaps an even more marked degree. If so many of these tunes are coming into the Lutheran Services from extra-Lutheran sources, we also do well …

Native Christian Movements In The Philippine Islands, Arnold Strohschein May 1947

Native Christian Movements In The Philippine Islands, Arnold Strohschein

Bachelor of Divinity

The story of the Independent Filipino Church is actually the story of one man, Bishop Gregorio Aglipay. It was this man who led the Filipino masses in a break from Rome to get up a truly Filipino national Church, a Church that a Filipino would be proud to claim as his own a church organized end conducted altogether by Filipino people. Therefore, it is necessary that we go into the life and background or this prominent man, Gregorio Aglipay, that we might learn what prompted him to lead his people in a revolt against Rome.

A Study Of The Divorce Theme As Used In The Novels Of Major And Minor Authors During The Period 1920-1945, Ethel Liss Simpson May 1947

A Study Of The Divorce Theme As Used In The Novels Of Major And Minor Authors During The Period 1920-1945, Ethel Liss Simpson

Master's Theses

The scientific study of divorce is still in its initial stages. Sociologists have studied the problem and have made great progress in understanding it. Fiction writers, in presenting the problem through the more easily accessible method of the novel have reached and have influenced a greater number of people than have the long and difficult treatises of the scientists. As a wife and mother I became interested in this most vital problem which has tragically broken so many homes. My purpose in making this study has been to ascertain the degree to which the authors are reflecting in the novels …

Christian Citizenship, Valentine J. Mack May 1947

Christian Citizenship, Valentine J. Mack

Bachelor of Divinity

"The Christian's life in this world is not lived in separate compartments, the spiritual and the temporal. It is one life, the life of a child of God, and in all the various situations and relationships in which the Christian finds himself he is motivated and governed by those principles which have been implanted in him in his regeneration and which are nurtured and developed by the means of grace. It is impossible, therefore, to separate his life as a Christian from his life as a citizen; in his relation to the state, the nation, and the government the Christian …

Lutheran Sola Fide Vs Roman Catholic Ex Opere Operato Of The Basis Of The Confessions, John G. Deterding May 1947

Lutheran Sola Fide Vs Roman Catholic Ex Opere Operato Of The Basis Of The Confessions, John G. Deterding

Bachelor of Divinity

Opposed to the sola fide is the doctrine of ex opere operato, i.e., that the sacraments mechanically confer grace upon all who receive them. Faith is not necessary to receive this grace, but the mere outward ceremony effects it mechanically for all those who do not place an obstacle in the way.

Nicolas Of Cusa His Life And Thought, Paul M. Riedel May 1947

Nicolas Of Cusa His Life And Thought, Paul M. Riedel

Bachelor of Divinity

Most interesting to the present writer were Cusa’s mysticism and his universalist approach to Christian truth and values. A mystic, he, nevertheless, strove to communicate his insight rationally. Though a sincere reformer, he remained a loyal adherent of the Roman church.
