The Normative Underpinnings Of Taxation, Sagit Leviner Dr. Dec 2012

The Normative Underpinnings Of Taxation, Sagit Leviner Dr.

Sagit Leviner Dr.

Questions about the appropriate rules and mechanisms of taxation are, first and foremost, questions concerning the nature of society. What can be taxed, what cannot, for what purpose, when, and how, are all matters that go to the heart of society and, in particular, concern society’s underlying beliefs and values vis-à-vis the meaning and attainment of justice. This Article explores the role of normative values and theory in tax policymaking. It suggests that a candid elaboration of normative perspectives, and how they shed light on taxation, could lead to a better understanding of society as well as a better tax …

International Terrorism And Television Channels:Operation And Regulation Of Tv News Channel During Coverage Of Terrorism, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr Dec 2012

International Terrorism And Television Channels:Operation And Regulation Of Tv News Channel During Coverage Of Terrorism, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

The concept of globalization or internationalization of certain wars, which were result of terrorist activities worldwide , as well as the high attention of terrorism coverage broadcast worldwide might open up better opportunities to journalists – particularly to those who work in democratic countries like U.S.A and India – to improve their coverage. The context is the key: the context of the operation methodology, follow of guidelines of regulatory bodies, and of the journalistic culture and of the global environment. It is very important how media presents consequences of terrorist acts, how information is transmitted to public. Television and press have …

Sex Ratio In Mumbai, Professor Vibhuti Patel Dec 2012

Sex Ratio In Mumbai, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

Gender equity has been a prominent aspect of equity concerns in public policy. The gender dimension has led to widespread advocacy and focused attention on equity in other than economic areas, such as education, health, decision-making, violence against women and political participation. The human development approach offers a capability-based approach to gender equity in development that is a departure from traditions focused on income and growth. Gender concerns have given the approach the power and flexibility to encompass aspects of inequality that would otherwise go unremarked. Its sensitivity to gender in turn has made it sensitive to a range of …

Women Of African Descent: Persistence In Completing A Doctorate, Vannetta L. Bailey-Iddrisu Dec 2012

Women Of African Descent: Persistence In Completing A Doctorate, Vannetta L. Bailey-Iddrisu

Vannetta L. Bailey-Iddrisu

This study examines the educational persistence of women of African descent (WOAD) in pursuit of a doctorate degree at universities in the southeastern United States. WOAD are women of African ancestry born outside the African continent. These women are heirs to an inner dogged determination and spirit to survive despite all odds (Pulliam, 2003, p. 337).This study used Ellis’s (1997) Three Stages for Graduate Student Development as the conceptual framework to examine the persistent strategies used by these women to persist to the completion of their studies.

Christopher N. Roman

In 2005 a Greek and American interdisciplinary team investigated two ship wrecks off the coast of Chios dating to the 4th-century B.C. and the 2nd/lst century. The project pioneered archaeological methods of precision acoustic, digital image, and chemical survey using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and in-situ sensors, increasing the speed of data acquisition while decreasing costs. The AUV recorded data revealing the physical dimensions, age, cargo, and preservation of the wrecks. The earlier wreck contained more than 350 amphoras, predominantly of Chian type, while the Hellenistic wreck contained about 40 Dressel 1C amphoras. Molecular biological analysis of two amphoras …

An Appraisal Of Al-Ijarah Al-Mawsufah Fi Al-Dhimmah (Forward Ijarah) From Fiqh Perspective, Abu Talib Mohammad Monawer, Akhtarzaite Abd Aziz Dec 2012

An Appraisal Of Al-Ijarah Al-Mawsufah Fi Al-Dhimmah (Forward Ijarah) From Fiqh Perspective, Abu Talib Mohammad Monawer, Akhtarzaite Abd Aziz

Abu Talib Mohammad Monawer

Al-Ijarah Al-Mawsufah Fi Al-Dhimmah (Forward Ijarah) is a new form of transactions introduced to the Islamic banking industry which has original ground in the classical books of Islamic Jurisprudence. Most of the classical scholars discussed it with particularized ijarah in parallel without any separation of chapters or headings unlike al-Bahuti and al-Minhaji. The scholars of four schools of Islamic Law are unanimously agreed on the legality of forward ijarah albeit some contemporary scholars mention the early dispute in this regard and attribute prohibition of forward ijarah to Hanafi School. This attribution is not accurate as it is proved by their …

Dr Christian Ritz

This paper reports on the recently completed and significant upgrade of the University of Wollongong’s Configurable Hemispheric Environment for Spatialised Sound (CHESS). The CHESS studio, which housed a 16 speaker hemisphere for creating spatial sound, has been converted into an anechoic chamber and a new 3D speaker system has been designed. The recent work is a continuation of a successful crossdisciplinary research activity between the Faculty of Informatics and the Faculty of Creative Arts. Also reported are new research initiatives that will be taking place in the facility.

Impostos E Alternativas, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2012

Impostos E Alternativas, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

The Role Of Motivation In The L2 Acquisition Of English By Saudi Students : A Dynamic Perspective, Ali Alzayid Dec 2012

The Role Of Motivation In The L2 Acquisition Of English By Saudi Students : A Dynamic Perspective, Ali Alzayid

Ali Alzayid

Since the work of Gardener and his associates in the 1950s, the role of motivation in learning a second language has continued to interest researchers. Previous studies on L2 motivation, were largely based on product oriented models of motivation, which tends to view motivation as a static phenomenon. Recently, however, there has been a shift in emphasis from a study of L2 motivation as a product to its study as a process. The methodological framework of this study was based on Dörnyei and Otto's (1998) Process Model of L2 Motivation. This model proposed that the construct of motivation is not …

Faience Goddesses And Ivory Bull-Leapers: The Aesthetics Of Sexual Difference At Late Bronze Age Knossos, Benjamin Alberti Dec 2012

Faience Goddesses And Ivory Bull-Leapers: The Aesthetics Of Sexual Difference At Late Bronze Age Knossos, Benjamin Alberti

Benjamin Alberti

In the figurative art of Late Bronze Age Knossos one recognizes a singular form to the human body which cuts across all other distinctions. Contrary to popular and academic interpretations, sexed differences are not marked in a clearly binary fashion. Drawing on this observation, the current paper analyses the relationship between two sets of figurines from the Bronze Age Palace site of Knossos: the faience figurines from the 'Temple Repositories' and the ivory bull-leaper figurines from the 'Domestic Quarter'. The interpretation of these figurines elucidates: a) how the appearance of sexual characteristics is context specific and not a general feature …

Web-Based Surveys And Assessment, Parviz Doulai, Ray Stace

Dr Parviz Doulai

This paper describes methods of on-line assessment and students’ survey, which utilize the Web interfaces and use them in conjunction with the Internet. To find the most appropriate alternative methods of students’ assessment and survey a variety of commercial and public domain tools was used to implement the following two basic tasks: 1. ‘Student Suggestion Box’ where students evaluate the subject and make comments and suggestions on the subject and its assessment; and 2. a partially AutoMark short assessment task, containing two paragraph questions and three multiple choice questions, that offers final marks to the instructor/students and provides prompt feedback …

Computer And Information Literacy Skills For Professional Engineering Educators, Parviz Doulai, Helen Mandl Dec 2012

Computer And Information Literacy Skills For Professional Engineering Educators, Parviz Doulai, Helen Mandl

Dr Parviz Doulai

This paper aims to raise awareness of the need for upgraded skills among professional engineering educators in order to keep pace with changes in the global information network. It is shown how extensive resources on the Internet may contribute to research as well as being valuable teaching supplements. A short discussion on the need for a type of "information literacy" that includes "computer literacy" is presented. This paper also briefly presents some background information about the Internet's extensive, and rapidly improving, resources. In the context of the ability to explore the global hypermedia environment, different types of Internet tools and …

Motivational Changes And Their Affecting Factors Among Students From Different Cultural Backgrounds, Masanori Matsumoto

Masanori Matsumoto

University students (N = 140) learning second or foreign languages in Australia were investigated to find whether their learning experience in a 12-week course changes their motivational intensity and their perceptions of classroom factors affecting their motivation. The study also attempted to detect any differences among the students from four different cultural/regional backgrounds; Europe & North America, North East Asia including China, Taiwan, Korea & Japan, Australia & New Zealand, and the rest. Questionnaire surveys were conducted twice, at the beginning and the end of the courses on the students learning English, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese to observe how …

The Social Shaping Of Technology: Lessons For Eco-Innovators, Robert B. Brown, David W. Mercer Dec 2012

The Social Shaping Of Technology: Lessons For Eco-Innovators, Robert B. Brown, David W. Mercer

Dr Robert Brown

A range of innovative technologies and applications offer exciting opportunities to address environmental issues. This is particularly relevant to computers and Information Technology (IT) more generally where new computational techniques and approaches to supporting business decision making have the potential to not only redress the carbon cost of that particular industry, but offer carbon savings to the broader community. In the following discussion paper we provide a overview of ways that insights from the interdisciplinary field of STS (Science and Technology Studies or Science Technology and Society) might assist eco-innovators in the IT sector. We identify four interlocking themes emerging …

“Dear Premier I Finally Escaped On Youtube”: A Cyberconflict Perspective On Chinese Dissidents, Athina Karatzogianni Dec 2012

“Dear Premier I Finally Escaped On Youtube”: A Cyberconflict Perspective On Chinese Dissidents, Athina Karatzogianni

Athina Karatzogianni

A cyberconflict perspective would discuss how politico-economic reforms, the media environment, and e-governance have affected dissent in China (i.e. communist party ideology, constructions of social and political identities, representations of and by dissidents, and link to e-governance; control of information, level of censorship; alternative sources; media effects on policy; political contest). Second cluster of elements of concern would be the effect of ICTs on mobilization structures, organizational forms, participation, recruitment, tactics and goals of dissidents, as well as changes in framing processes and the impact of the political opportunity structure on resistances. Third, in relation to ethnic, ethnoreligious and cultural …

Massa E Elite. Uma Lição Da 'Renascença Portuguesa', Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2012

Massa E Elite.

Gaming The System: Bio-Economics, Game Theory, & Fisheries Management, Richard A. Grisel Dec 2012

Gaming The System: Bio-Economics, Game Theory, & Fisheries Management, Richard A. Grisel

Richard A Grisel

This paper argues that game theory provides powerful, effective new tools to analyze externalities that occur in the context of strategic, multi-party, interactive decision-making. I will attempt to treat this as a non-technical paper and avoid the complex mathematics better left to economists and mathematicians. Instead, a more achievable goal is to illustrate how high-seas open-access fishing is virtually identical to a game situation, treat the fundamentals of game theory, and demonstrate that game theoretic analyses are well-suited and fruitful for designing effective policy responses to fisheries management, particularly with respect to the straddling stocks problem. Indeed, one seminal fisheries …

Negotiating Conflicting Rhetorics: Rancheras And Documentary In The Classroom, Dora Ramirez-Dhoore Dec 2012

Negotiating Conflicting Rhetorics: Rancheras And Documentary In The Classroom, Dora Ramirez-Dhoore

Dora Ramirez-Dhoore

As a young teenager, I remember sitting in the back seat of my parent's car, rolling my eyes at the noise coming from the radio speakers. On the airwaves being sent directly from Texas and Florida and behind the overbearing static sound, I could make out the TAN, TAN of the ending of the rancherai song my father was singing and enjoying. My mother would be next to him singing and whistling along, ignoring the static sound that was louder than the music and that would invariably give my teenage self a headache.ii My sister and I, two …
