Eucharist And Dragon Fighting As Resistance: Against Commodity Fetishism And Scientism, Jeffery Nicholas Jul 2015

Eucharist And Dragon Fighting As Resistance: Against Commodity Fetishism And Scientism, Jeffery Nicholas

Jeffery Nicholas

This paper examines two practices – the Roman Catholic Practice of Eucharist and the game Dungeons and Dragons – to show how social critique can be mounted from within a practice. It begins by relating Alasdair MacIntyre’s notion of tradition to his earlier analysis of ideology and to the notion of ideology in general. The paper then tackles two dominant forms of ideology – Commodity Fetishism and Scientism – and shows how both Eucharist and Dungeons and Dragons promote critical thinking to resist those ideologies. In the process, it denies the Althusserian-Foucauldian analysis of ideology as mere materiality and defends …

The Troodos Hunting Expedition, Published From The Ms Of E. Croker, Kyriakos N. Demetriou

Kyriakos N. Demetriou

The “Troodos Hunting Expedition” came to light recently, as a result of a message received by Mr John Elverson who was doing a research on his great grandfather Edward William Dunlo Croker (14 September 1849 – 10 May 1893). Edward, born at Merrion Square North, Dublin, was the fourth son of Captain Edward Croker of Ballynagarde, county Limerick and his wife Lady Georgiana Ellen Monck ....The family still possesses, inter alia, two documents written by him, that shed some light on a period of his life with focus on Cyprus: First, an account of an expedition that he made to …

The Lower Ninth Ward, New Orleans: Vestiges Of A Neighborhood, Adam N. Hess Dec 2008

The Lower Ninth Ward, New Orleans: Vestiges Of A Neighborhood, Adam N. Hess

Adam N Hess

The Lower Ninth Ward, New Orleans: Vestiges of a Neighborhood is a photo-documentary of the remnants of one of America’s most unique and culturally distinct neighborhoods. Three years after Hurricane Katrina devastated this neighborhood, it lies in ruin, slowly returning to nature. All that remains of the community that once occupied the Lower Ninth are the dilapidated buildings, the crumbling homes, and the small possessions left behind.

For the past three years I have explored the Lower Ninth Ward, discovering the remains of a community rich in tradition, family, and religion. Through the use of black and white photographs and …

This paper describes the combined wall slip and reliable MHD steady flow of conducting viscous incompressible fluid through channels permeable boundaries. The governing equations have been solved by Finite Difference Technique. The analytical results and conclusions have been presented and discussed through various graphs. Results presented in this paper revealed that the fluid velocity can be replaced by a magnetic field and the wall slip. Appropriate result shows that the wall skin friction increases with suction and decreases with injection.

Généticisation Et Responsabilité: Les Habits Neufs De La Gouvernance Néolibérale (Uncorrected Proofs), Antoinette Rouvroy

Antoinette Rouvroy

Die Maschinelle Übersetzung Ist Gefragter Denn Je, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

The Growing Inter-Ethnic Conflicts In Contemporary Nigeria: Is Ethnic Security Dilemma A Root Cause?, Ali Simon Yusufu Bagaji

Ali Simon Yusufu Bagaji

Nigeria is ethnically a diverse nation-state. Its ethnic diversity, like that of the United State of America ideally is a source of strength. However on the contrary, analysis of post independence inter-ethnic relations in Nigeria indicates surge from ‘ethnic accommodation to ethnic agitation’. Consequently, due to frequent inter-ethnic conflict, the task ‘to keep Nigeria one’ is therefore more than ever becoming an uphill task. This article explores the root causes of the growing inter-ethnic conflicts in contemporary Nigeria from the perspective of the ethnic security dilemma prism and concludes that it is a relevant explanatory tool for understanding it.

University Of South Florida Libraries Holocaust & Genocide Studies Draft Business Plan, Mark I. Greenberg

Almost a half million genocide and torture victims currently reside in the United States, with millions more suffering silently in other parts of the world. Recognizing an important opportunity to unify the University of South Florida’s wide-ranging Holocaust & genocide studies initiatives and to contribute to global education and action, the USF Libraries have created a global interdisciplinary center to better understand and prevent genocide. USF Libraries Holocaust & Genocide Studies Center will become an internationally recognized center for the …

Increasing Political Activism And Mobilization: Building An Oromo Agency And Capacity For Liberation, Asafa Jalata Dec 2008

Increasing Political Activism And Mobilization: Building An Oromo Agency And Capacity For Liberation, Asafa Jalata

Asafa Jalata

Without increasing our political activism, mobilizing and organizing our people, we cannot effectively challenge and defeat our external and internal enemies that are attempting to strangulate the development of Oromummaa and the progress of the Oromo national struggle. Our external enemies have been using Oromo clienteles to achieve their political and economic objectives in Oromia. Some Oromos have been used as raw materials in building other nations. Such Oromos have lacked political and national consciousness or lacked self-respect and attacked the Oromo nation for money and other interests. As the Said Bare government created and used the Somali Abo group …

Buffalo Hunt International Trade And The Virtual Extinction Of The North American Bison, M. Scott Taylor Nov 2008

Buffalo Hunt International Trade And The Virtual Extinction Of The North American Bison, M. Scott Taylor

M. Scott Taylor

In the 16th century, North America contained 25-30 million buffalo; by the late 19th century less than 100 remained. While removing the buffalo east of the Mississippi took settlers two centuries, the remaining 10 to 15 million buffalo on the Great Plains were killed in a punctuated slaughter in a little over 10 years. I employ theory, data from international trade statistics, and first person accounts to argue that the slaughter on the plains was initiated by a foreign-made innovation and fueled by a foreign demand for industrial leather. Ironically, the ultimate cause of this sad chapter in American environmental …

International Terrorism:Role ,Responsibility And Operation Of Media Channles, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

"Terrorism" is a term that cannot be given a stable defintion. Or rather, it can, but to do so forstalls any attempt to examine the major feature of its relation to television in the contemporary world. As the central public arena for organising ways of picturing and talking about social and political life, TV plays a pivotal role in the contest between competing defintions, accounts and explanations of terrorism. Which term is used in any particular context is inextricably tied to judgemements about the legitimacy of the action in question and of the political system against which it is directed. …

Further than Ethics concieved as mere obedience, Republican Ethics expresses the idea of duty for freedom and Liberty. After Law concieved as only duty and imperative norms from power to the subjects, there is the possibility of a fraternal law, in new patterns. This article explores several ways in a new ethics and a new law paradigms, after the objective Roman Law and the subjective modern Law.

Letting Go Through The Darkness Of Faith, Alan A. Mackenzie Nov 2008

Letting Go Through The Darkness Of Faith, Alan A. Mackenzie

Alan A MacKENZIE

Our journey to God really is one of being stripped down and approaching in our vulnerability and weakness, in our disgrace (lack of grace). The important thing to understand is that, when we feel “in control” we are inevitably putting up barriers, making it more difficult for us to be aware of graciousness of God. It is when we are conscious of our own shortcomings and fragility, not a morbid self-pitying way but consciously acknowledging the totality of our personality that we tend to be mostly receptive to the promptings and presence of God’s spirit. This is a personal account …
