George Grote On Plato And Athenian Democracy: A Study In Classical Reception, Kyriakos N. Demetriou Dec 1999

George Grote On Plato And Athenian Democracy: A Study In Classical Reception, Kyriakos N. Demetriou

Kyriakos N. Demetriou

George Grote (1794-1871) belonged to the leading Philosophic Radicals of early Victorian Britain. A student of James Mill and Jeremy Bentham, a self-educated classical scholar, and a committed utilitarian liberal, he succeeded in revolutionizing the field of Greek studies. The author draws on both unpublished works of Grote and also a wide range of published material, with emphasis on the History of Greece and Plato and the other Companions of Sokrates, to give us this study of the historian's thought and understanding of classical Greece. The book starts with an examination of Grote's early intellectual influences and then proceeds to …

Paragons Of Virtue With Carnal Appetites: The Women In Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, And Antony And Cleopatra, Michele Gibney Nov 1999

Paragons Of Virtue With Carnal Appetites: The Women In Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, And Antony And Cleopatra, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

A theme that Shakespeare treat several times in his plays is the sexual mistrust of women and their subsequent testing and vindication. It appears that men “perceiving sexuality as power over women, fear its loss through female betrayal,” (VIII, 41). Specifically I am choosing to look at three plays, Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, and Antony and Cleopatra, in order to examine the different ways in which females in these plays, Desdemona, Hero, and Cleopatra, cope with the male insecurities that they are confronted with. In so doing, I hope to point out that Shakespeare’s reasoning in continually bringing up …

The Coming Slavery: The Determinism Of Herbert Spencer, Mario J. Rizzo Nov 1999

The Coming Slavery: The Determinism Of Herbert Spencer, Mario J. Rizzo

Mario Rizzo

Herbert Spencer (1820–1903) believed that Victorian Britain was moving toward a society of total regimentation (slavery). This movement was part of a cosmic process of evolution and dissolution. While the long-run (but not ultimate) destination of society was a higher form of social organization based on voluntary and complex interpersonal relationships, the immediate tendency was retrograde—a movement away from the liberation of mankind from the bondage of previous eras. This Article explores (1) the reasons for the retrograde movement, (2) its inevitability, and (3) the role of ideas in the process. The general conclusion is that in an effort to …

"No Piece, No Peace": Class Contradictions In The Resurging Black Freedom Movement, Sundiata K. Cha-Jua Aug 1999

"No Piece, No Peace": Class Contradictions In The Resurging Black Freedom Movement, Sundiata K. Cha-Jua

Sundiata K Cha-Jua

In the shadow of the St. Louis Arch (commemorating "western expansion"), the Black Freedom Movement is being forced forward by the dynamic interaction between racial commonalities and class contradictions. Two things are important about the I-70 demonstrations? First, tactically by pushing contemporary protest beyond symbolic demonstrations this entrepreneur-led coalition has rehabilitated the march as a militant offensive weapon. Second, from the perspective of the Black working class and poor, the current settlement seems a sellout. The agreement highlights the need for poor and working class Blacks to pursue their own class interests. The I-70 actions deserved united Black community support, …

Readers' Theatre As A History Teaching Tool, Sandra D. Harmon, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg, Susan Westbury Aug 1999

Readers' Theatre As A History Teaching Tool, Sandra D. Harmon, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg, Susan Westbury

Pamela Riney-Kehrberg

LAST YEAR marked the one-hundred-and-fiftietha nniversaryo f the first women's rights convention held at Seneca Falls, New York. We wanted to celebrate the event with a dramatic presentation for our students. Lacking the skill to write a compelling play, we decided to put on a readers' theatre version of the convention. Such productions are engaging and relatively easy to stage as the actors read from scripts, usually without costumes or scenery. Readers' theatre also allows greater control over historical accuracy than a conventional play. Since history is only occasionally dramatic, the demands of theatre, whether on stage or in films …

Interpreting Shadows: Arms Control And Defense Planning In A Rapidly Changing Multi-Polar World, David R. King

David King

Cold War thinking continues to guide United States' policy in the Post-Cold War environment. Continuing to pursue policies forged during the Cold War will not be adequate to address proliferation for two reasons. First, Cold War policies do not reflect changes in the world in respect to other major or regional powers. Second, current policies overlook potential long-term counterproductive consequences. Adopting an overarching national policy on arms control will require understanding different world views of the United States, other major powers, and regional powers.

The MUA was formed in 1993 following the amalgamation of the SUA and the WWF.

Woman-As-Symbol: Intersections Of Indian Nationalism, Gender, And Identity, Shakuntala Rao May 1999

Woman-As-Symbol: Intersections Of Indian Nationalism, Gender, And Identity, Shakuntala Rao

Shakuntala Rao

The purpose of this article is to explore the connection between Indian nationalism and gender identity. I provide a critique of Radhakrishnan and Chatterjee's notion of the outer/inner dichotomy of Indian nationalism by stating that religion, in postcolonial India, has emerged as a discursive totality that has subsumed the politics of indigenous or inner identity more so than other rhetoric of caste, tribal, gender, and class. I provide a groundwork for this debate via the writings of Nehru and Gandhi. I conclude, through an analysis of the practices of amniocentesis and Sati, that women and their bodies have been used …

Cindy_Sherman_The_Rhetoric_Of_Writing_Wi.Pdf, Barry J. Mauer

Barry Mauer

My dissertation proposes an arts model of humanities learning for a computerized networked writing environment. Through case studies of Picasso's cubist paintings, Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills, and the Hollywood star system, I discuss the invention of a new rhetoric for media practices within the institutional frames of art and entertainment. My goal is to develop a rhetoric for hypermedia practices within education. As a work of heuretics, which uses the logic of invention rather than interpretation, my dissertation explores art, theory and criticism as resources for a hybrid genre of writing within electronic media. In this genre, students …

Traumatic Heroism.Doc, Kirby Farrell Apr 1999

Traumatic Heroism.Doc, Kirby Farrell

kirby farrell

This is Chapter 2 of Post-Traumatric Culture. It examines fantasies of heroic rescue colored by a sense of inadequacy and even futility in the 1890s. As Ernest Becker maintains, humans are uniquely hunted by awareness of death—I would add, haunted by an awareness of futility. Hence fantasies of heroic rescue, which serve humankind all over the world as a tool for maintaining morale. The present analysis focuses on the image of St George, and teases from it a range of fantasies, from gender differences and control of creaturely motives to intergenerational rivalry.

A Coalfield Tapestry: Weaving The Socioeconomic Fabric Of Women's Lives, Ann M. Oberhauser, Anne-Marie Turnage

Ann Oberhauser

Throughout the coalfields of central Appalachia, working-class people are engaging in alternative means of economic survival. For many, the region's endemic poverty is now worsening as tremendous job losses in coal mining diminish the historic source of employment for working -class men. In order to secure the necessities of life for themselves and their families, working-class women are not only entering the paid labor force but also turning to unregulated forms of income generation that lie outside the formal, wage-earning economy.

Cyberspace: The Final Frontier?, Patrick Flanagan Mar 1999

Cyberspace: The Final Frontier?, Patrick Flanagan

Patrick Flanagan

The science fiction series of the '70's, Star Trek, began all its telecastings with the announcement "Space: The Final Frontier." Star Trek chronicled the voyage of a crew navigating their way through space. For the travelers, space seemed like the last unknown entity that needed to be investigated. As they journeyed, they learned of the boundless nature of space. Each episode portrayed a group of folks encountering new situations, attempting to solve another problem, or strategizing how to overcome an obstacle. While few people will ever have a chance to travel in a spaceship to discover the universe, most have …
