The Theme Of "Relevance" In Third World Human Sciences, Syed Farid Alatas
The Theme Of "Relevance" In Third World Human Sciences, Syed Farid Alatas
farid alatas
The fact that the humanities and social sciences in developing societies generally originated in the West has raised the issue of the relevance of these arts and sciences to the needs and problems of Third World societies. This questioning of relevance has led, in turn, to the call for the indigenisation of knowledge in developing societies. While there has been a great deal of discussion on indigenisation, there has been little practice of indigenised humanities and social science. As a result, there are few examples of what indigenous knowledge constitutes from theoretical, methodological and empirical points of view. This paper …

Economics Of Time And Ignorance: 1996 Intro Survey, Mario Rizzo
Economics Of Time And Ignorance: 1996 Intro Survey, Mario Rizzo
Mario Rizzo
This is a review of the developments in Austrian-subjectivist economics during the period 1985-1996 from the perspective of the themes developed in the first-edition of "The Economics of Time and Ignorance." It is also a concise statement of a modern understanding of the classic ideas of Austrian economics with a view to seeing their connection to a broader set of perspectives in economics. (The version available here is the final draft of the text available in the book published by Routledge. This is available from Routledge as an e-book or from various Amazon.com sellers.)
The Struggle For Knowledge: The Case Of Emergent Oromo Studies, Asafa Jalata
The Struggle For Knowledge: The Case Of Emergent Oromo Studies, Asafa Jalata
Asafa Jalata
Taking the Oromo as historical actors, the emergent Oromo studies identify some deficiencies of "Ethiopian studies" that primarily focus on the Amhara and Tigray ethnic groups and their rulers, and ignore the history of the Oromo people. Many Ethiopian and Ethiopianist scholars do not recognize the positive cultural achievements of this people.' With their colonization and incorporation into Ethiopia, the Oromo could not develop independent institutions that would allow them to produce and disseminate their historical knowledge freely. Currently, they are fighting for national self-determination: to regain their political freedom and rebuild independent institutions.

In Defence Of The British Constitution: Theoretical Implications Of The Debate Over Athenian Democracy In Britain, 1770-1850, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
In Defence Of The British Constitution: Theoretical Implications Of The Debate Over Athenian Democracy In Britain, 1770-1850, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
Kyriakos N. Demetriou
Writing a history of ancient Greece, in periods of political turbulence and transition, involved the construction of an edifying platform for civil conduct. Britain, 1770-1850, was one such period. In examining Athenian democracy the British historians of the late eighteenth century, like William Mitford and John Gillies, found a convenient channel to articulate their private political preferences and antipathies, thereby accentuating the ideological antagonism of the post-revolutionary age. Athenian liberalism was deliberately drawn from oblivion only to be set as a constitutional example to avoid, whereas the merits of the mixed British constitution were distinctly exposed. The British Utilitarians, by …

75th Anniversary Of The Foundation Of The Communist Party Of Australia, 1995, Rowan Cahill
Rowan Cahill
The 75th Anniversay of the foundation of the Communist Party of Australia (CPA) was commemorated in Sydney in 1995. Although the Party voluntarily wound up in 1991, its impact and legacy on the nation was, and is, an ongoing subject of scholarly interest and debate. This article is Cahill's report of the commemoration event, and his ruminations on the significance of the Party on Australia's history and culture.
The Seven Deadly Sins Of Hieronymus Bosch, Sally A. Struthers Ph.D.
The Seven Deadly Sins Of Hieronymus Bosch, Sally A. Struthers Ph.D.
Sally A. Struthers, Ph.D.
Some have tried to explain the iconography of Bosch’s works through alchemy, astrology, medicine and the Adamites. Bosch’s work is rich, and seems to come from a number of sources, but he always drew from traditional Christian themes. The sinfulness of mankind is a major theme in Bosch’s oeuvre, and is bound up with the late Medieval theme of the punishments of the damned at the Last Judgment. The theme of the seven deadly sins pervades every surviving painting by Hieronymus Bosch.

The Development Of Platonic Studies In Britain And The Role Of The Utilitarians, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
The Development Of Platonic Studies In Britain And The Role Of The Utilitarians, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
Kyriakos N. Demetriou
The British utilitarians are not generally considered explorers of classical Greek thought. This paper examines the contribution of James Mill, John Stuart Mill, and George Grote to the development of Platonic studies in nineteenth-century Britain. Their understanding of Platonic philosophy challenged prevalent interpretations, and caused a fruitful debate over long neglected aspects of Plato's thought. Grote's Platonic analysis, which comes last in order of time, cannot, of course, be considered in isolation from the relevant debates in Germany. Grote, the erudite historian of ancient Greece, paid considerable attention to the arguments of the German classicists, put forward in many cases …

The Localism Of The County Feast In Late-Stuart Political Culture, Newton E. Key
The Localism Of The County Feast In Late-Stuart Political Culture, Newton E. Key

On 29 June 1678, Huntingdonshire natives residing in or visiting London had the opportunityto witness a glittering entertainment, The Huntington Divertisement, or, an Enterlude For the Generall Entertainment at the County-Feast, held at Merchant-Taylors Hall. On 27 March 1690, Yorkshire natives, also feasting in Merchant Tailors Hall, were treated to a triumphant song by Thomas D'Urfey and Henry Purcell. These elaborate pieces, presented a dozen years apart and admittedly unrepresentative of the sermons, processions, and huzzas that graced usual natives feasts, are nonetheless worth analyzing for the issues and rhetoric that the artists and their patrons thought relevant. By examining …

Hans Bellmer In The Art Institute Of Chicago: The Wandering Libido And The Hysterical Body, Sue Taylor
Hans Bellmer In The Art Institute Of Chicago: The Wandering Libido And The Hysterical Body, Sue Taylor
Sue Taylor
Part of a special issue on the Mary Reynolds Collection and related works in the Art Institute of Chicago. The writer discusses the work of German artist Hans Bellmer. Bellmer's whole oeuvre is in a sense symbolized by a lithograph depicting a doll with an inquisitive disembodied eye peering through her navel and a dark male hand prodding her breast, an image of male sexual domination and curiosity. Bellmer's concerns dovetailed with those of the Surrealists: the Surrealist fascination with automata and the Surrealist idealization of the innocent femme-enfant, the latter coinciding with Bellmer's fascination with little girls as a …
The Case For Substantivism, Carolyn Brighouse
The Case For Substantivism, Carolyn Brighouse
Carolyn Brighouse
My dissertation is a discussion of the ontological commitment of spacetime theories. I am concerned about whether we should be realists about spacetime. I outline a version of substantivalism that I show is attractive on general grounds in that it treats spacetime in just the same way that a realist ought to treat entities she is a realist about. I then show that this version of substantivalism is immune to the hole argument and other recent criticisms of substantivalism. I also re-examine traditional arguments for substantivalism, and show that my version is at least as well supported as more traditional …
