Notes On Various Theories Regarding The Islamization Of The Malay Archipelago, Syed Farid Alatas Oct 1985

Notes On Various Theories Regarding The Islamization Of The Malay Archipelago, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

In the study of the history of the Islamization of the Malay Archipelago (present-day Malaysia and Indonesia) various theories and points of view have been presented and the issue of objectivity arises in this context as clearly as in any writing of history. Mannheim's thesis that "the greatest comprehensiveness and the greatest fruitfulness in dealing with empirical materials" are the criteria to be applied in the choice between various interpretations' would seem to be relevant also in this case.

Jakarta: Cooperation And Resistance In An Occupied City, Robert Cribb

Robert Cribb

Jakarta became Indonesia's capital upon the declaration of independence in August 1945, but the city was soon occupied by British forces, who permitted a gradual re-establishment of Dutch control. The city remained formally the capital, but the most administration moved to Yogyakarta. The Republican city hall, Balai Agung, attempted to maintain the Republic's presence. After the Dutch military action of July 1947, the Balai Agung was removed, but nationalists in Jakarta contrinued to make life difficult for Dutch authorities.

Formal Problems In Semitic Phonology And Morphology, John J. Mccarthy Jan 1985

Formal Problems In Semitic Phonology And Morphology, John J. Mccarthy

John J. McCarthy

This study deals with the formal character of phonological representations and rules. Two basic lines of investigation are pursued. One, the metrical, holds that there is hierarchic metrical structure within syllable structure and of stress is elaborated based on data from Tiberian Hebrew, Classical Arabic, and the modern Arabic dialects of Cairo and Damascus. The effects of syllable structure on the form and function of segmental phonological rules are adumbrated with data from Tiberian Hebrew as well. The role of metrical structure in vowel harmony also figures briefly.

The other formal line followed is prosodic. An essentially autosegmental theory of …

Ziggurat, Randall Snyder Jan 1985

Ziggurat, Randall Snyder

Randall Snyder

ZIGGURAT Invocation Level One Level Two Level Three Level Four Level Five Level Six-cadenza Level Seven The toccata-fantasy “Ziggurat” derives its structure from the Sumerian step-pyramid that in its most characteristic shape consisted of seven levels. While the exact function of the ziggurat is speculative, this work’s conception is that of an hierarchical ladder, each succeeding level demanding a higher degree of sensitivity culminating in a final initiatory test (cadenza) before admittance to the seventh level. “Ziggurat” consists of an opening invocation and seven sections that ascend through the organ’s four and one-half octave range in a general evolution from …

Women’S Religious Roles In Brazil: A History Of Limitations, Carole A. Myscofski Dec 1984

Women’S Religious Roles In Brazil: A History Of Limitations, Carole A. Myscofski

Carole Myscofski

The study of religion is now expanding to include, consciously and in scholarly depth, the roles of women in many religious traditions. Investigation of women's religious history may find, as is the case in Brazil, that women's absence from strong religious roles is sometimes more noteworthy than their presence.
I undertook the research for the present study when I repeatedly failed to find evidence of women's influence in Roman Catholic institutions in Brazil. While I thought I would "rediscover" women's roles, I found there were no great roles to rediscover: women were consistently suppressed and excluded from participation in public …
