The Do-Right, Anne Giangiulio
The Do-Right, Anne Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
Book cover I designed for 'The Do-Right' written by Lisa Sandlin, published by Cinco Puntos Press. This was one of those design jobs that, after several cover proposals by me—including a woodcut, and one with groovy 70s type referencing the time period in which the book is set, we all decided that this photo entitled 'Blessing' by Keith Carter was simply perfect for the cover. It's a great read brimming with Grrrrl power in the main character of Delpha Wade. 306 pages. 1973. That's fourteen years of prison time after Delpha Wade killed a man who was raping her. She’d …

Centennial Notecards, Anne Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
From the over 30 watercolor drawings I did of buildings on The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) campus, 24 were selected to be made into high-quality deckle edged blank notecards. The cards are sold on campus in 4 separate packages of 6 cards each for $18 as part of UTEP's Centennial celebration in 2014. These same drawings also became a silk scarf (see also "Silk Scarf designed for UTEP's Centennial Celebration" under the "2013 Portfolio in Depth" header).

I designed this poster for the annual Chalk the Block event which took place October 10–October 12, 2014 in downtown El Paso. For the pop-up gallery component of the event, I organized a group of 10 students from my 'Graphic Design 4: Typography' class at The University of Texas at El Paso. Their posters were judged and selected to be on sale in a downtown outdoor booth for the three-day weekend event. All proceeds from the sale of the posters went directly to the students.

All proceeds from the sale of the posters went directly to the students.

That Mad Game: Growing Up In A Warzone, An Anthology Of Essays From Around The Globe, Anne Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
Book cover I designed for 'That Mad Game: Growing Up in a Warzone, An Anthology of Essays from Around the Globe, published by Cinco Puntos Press. Seventeen writers contribute essays about how they became adults in times of war. Essays focus on modern history but take no sides. Vietnam from both sides. Bosnia. The Gulf War. Rwanda. Juárez. El Salvador. The list goes on and on. There are no winners, just the survivors left behind. Picking up the pieces. Essays in the anthology are: A Talib in Love by Qais Akbar Omar / AFGHANISTAN No Longer Young by Phillip Cole …
Pop-Up Gallery For Chalk Theblock 2012, Anne Giangiulio
Pop-Up Gallery For Chalk Theblock 2012, Anne Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
2012 marked the fifth anniversary of Chalk the Block, an annual weekend-long arts festival held in downtown El Paso that attracts over 30,000 visitors. The pop-up galleries portion of the festival takes empty, for-lease spaces and turns them into art exhibition venues for the duration of the weekend. I was asked by the event organizers to curate my own pop-up gallery. For my gallery, I assigned students from my Spring 2012 Graphic Design 4: Typography class to design posters for the event. These posters were judged by the other UTEP graphic design faculty and the best 15 selected were screenprinted …
Identity Campaign For A Local Jewelry Designer, Anne Giangiulio
Identity Campaign For A Local Jewelry Designer, Anne Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
This was a proposed identity and packaging campaign I designed for a local jewelry designer whose work is very much earthy and southwest influenced. The jewelery designer uses mainly sterling silver and copper along with semi-precious stones in the work. This is referenced by the use of metallic threads woven through the business cards, each unique. A rubber stamp was also created for packaging like the gift box. Flat-backed adhesive gems were applied to the various components for an added touch of whimsy and sparkle that juxtapose the utilitarian look and feel of the brown kraft paper.
Which Side Are You On? The Story Of A Song, Anne Giangiulio
Which Side Are You On? The Story Of A Song, Anne Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
Excerpt from the graphic novel I designed, 'Which Side Are You On? The Story of a Song' by George Ella Lyon, in collaboration with Brooklyn illustrator Christopher Cardinale, published by Cinco Puntos Press. 'Which Side Are You On?' tells the story of a song which was written in 1931 by Florence Reece in a rain of bullets. It has been sung by people fighting for their rights all over the world. Florence’s husband Sam was a coal miner in Kentucky. Many of the coal mines were owned by big companies, who kept wages low and spent as little money on …

You Sing, Youtube: A Hands-On Approach To Using Youtube In The Performance Curriculum, Elisa Fraser Wilson
Elisa Fraser Wilson
In September 2007, the University of Texas at El Paso Music Theatre Company embarked on a voyage of on-line discovery: how to utilize YouTube as a tool for self-and peer critique and outside professional review. Music Theatre Company is the Department of Music’s opera/music theatre skills development workshop and production company, presenting two to three scenes and/or full-scale productions each year. As such, its curriculum has traditionally revolved around the preparation and in-class coaching of songs, arias, and scenes, with public concert or production outcomes. The recent addition of a required textbook has added a necessary written assignment component; however, …

The Ethical Phenomenon Of Gm-Corn: Anger, Anxiety, And Arrogance In Crossing American Borders, Jules Simon
The Ethical Phenomenon Of Gm-Corn: Anger, Anxiety, And Arrogance In Crossing American Borders, Jules Simon
Jules Simon
In terms of phenomenology, I often wonder about the relevance of what I do as a philosopher for the life of those with whom I come into contact. This ‘coming into contact’ happens for me on several levels: as one human among many, as a husband and father and son and brother, as a teacher, as a neighbor, and as country or city dweller. I remember with fondness those times in the late sultry summer months when, as a youth, I would drive with my father to this or that local farm-stand on some remote back road in the hills …
