Unpacking Global Service-Learning In Developing Contexts: A Case Study From Rural Tanzania, Ann M. Oberhauser, Rita Daniels
Unpacking Global Service-Learning In Developing Contexts: A Case Study From Rural Tanzania, Ann M. Oberhauser, Rita Daniels
Ann Oberhauser
This article examines intercultural aspects of global service-learning (GSL) focused on gender and sustainable development in rural Tanzania. The discussion draws from critical development and postcolonial feminist approaches to examine how GSL addresses globalization, social histories, and political economies of development. The empirical analysis is based on a program that is designed to develop global awareness, intercultural competence, and critical thinking among students and communities. The relationships, discourses, and actions of the participants are examined through written assignments, a focus group discussion, and observations of activities and the community. The findings of this study contribute to broader debates concerning experiential …

Using a case study approach, the authors o f this article strive to explore the challenges and adverse impact that faculty o f color often experience due to structural inequities, institutional racism, and the lack o f cultural awareness on the part o f White institutions. Furthermore, the purpose o f this article is to demonstrate that even when there is a significant number o f faculty members o f color, stereotyping and discrimination still occur and often impact the promotion, retention, and experiences o f newly recruited faculty o f color. Our narratives as African American female faculty are …

'Listen To What You Say': Rwanda’S Postgenocide Language Policies, Lynne Tirrell
Lynne Tirrell
Freedom of expression is considered a basic human right, and yet most countries have restrictions on speech they deem harmful. Following the genocide of the Tutsi, Rwanda passed a constitution (2003) and laws against hate speech and other forms of divisionist language (2008, 2013). Understanding how language shaped “recognition harms” that both constitute and fuel genocide also helps account for political decisions to limit “divisionist” discourse. When we speak, we make expressive commitments, which are commitments to the viability and value of ways of speaking. This article explores reasons a society would decide to say, “We don’t talk that way …

The Ethiopian Conception Of Time And Modernity, Messay Kebede
Messay Kebede
If there is one thing that philosophers agree upon, it is that the meaning of time is a central philosophical question. If we take the Western world as an example, there is no famous philosopher who has not investigated time. The German philosopher Martin Heidegger, to indicate the centrality of time, writes: “all ontology is rooted in the phenomenon of time correctly viewed and correctly explained.”
Likewise, according to the French philosopher Henri Bergson, the main reason that philosophical questions are difficult is because “we do not think about real time.” The fact that the question of time is very …

Written On Our Hearts: Tswana Christians And The 'Word Of God' In The Mid-Nineteenth Century, Stephen Volz
Written On Our Hearts: Tswana Christians And The 'Word Of God' In The Mid-Nineteenth Century, Stephen Volz
Stephen Volz
The adoption of Christianity by Tswana people in southern Africa during the nineteenth century generally involved being inspired in some way by stories and ideas presented in the Bible, but the role of Christian scripture varied according to local and personal circumstances. Although European missionaries introduced Christianity to the Tswana, they had little control over the different ways that early Tswana converts perceived, adapted and proclaimed the new teaching. This was particularly true among western and northern Tswana in the mid-nineteenth century before the extension of colonial rule into the interior, as many Tswana communities remained largely intact and were …

For more than a century watermarks have been used as an important component in cataloging, dating, and authenticating books, manuscripts, art work, musical scores, financial instruments and other paper items. The gains can be immense if watermarks and countermarks, not as singletons but in combination, are studied as only one aspect of a paper sheet and that examination is combined with study extending across many disciplines. The Andrea Galvani Pordenone paper mills provide a useful case study as to how we can deduce date ranges for their watermarks by using a holistic approach – combining paper sheet analysis with the …

Decolonizing Nationalism: Reading Nkrumah And Nyerere’S Pan-African Epistemology, Jesse Benjamin
Decolonizing Nationalism: Reading Nkrumah And Nyerere’S Pan-African Epistemology, Jesse Benjamin
Jesse Benjamin
Using the perspective of intellectual history, this essay explores the lives and philosophies of Julius K. Nyerere and Kwame Nkrumah, heads of state in Tanzania and Ghana, respectively, as well as philosophers, activists, and Pan-African leaders throughout their lifetimes. The central focus is on their concepts and practices of nationalism, and their attempts to transcend the confines of colonial, Western epistemologies in formulating new African social practices. Their concepts of African socialism, pan-Africanism, and neo-colonialism are examined closely. Their lived experiences with injustice in Africa and the Black Atlantic shaped their perspectives. Their unfinished work bequeathed to us tools for …
The Figure With Recurrent Presence: The Defiant Hero In Nigerian Narratives, Ignatius Chukwumah
The Figure With Recurrent Presence: The Defiant Hero In Nigerian Narratives, Ignatius Chukwumah
Ignatius Chukwumah
ABSTRACT. Nigerian narratives always reveal corruption, disillusionment, mythological entities, political instability, cultural backgrounds and traditions of the tribes and nations used as context. Textual resources advertise literary works as realistic. In general, the recurring presence of the characters in these narratives is almost ignored. Unlike earlier interpretations of the Nigerian narratives, this essay is based on the theory of Frye’s five mimetic modes or categories. Based on the analysis of The Interpreters (SOYINKA, 1972) and The Famished Road (OKRI, 1992), this article examines the defiant hero as a recurring presence in Nigerian narratives. In fact, the hero is a character …

Conservation Of Sub-Saharan African Manuscripts, Michaelle L. Biddle
Michaelle Biddle
This paper describes a focused conservation and preservation strategy whereby collections of sub-Saharan manuscripts, or even single manuscript items, are treated in stages, or phases, over a period of time according to a planned and logical sequence of procedures in order to achieve economies of scale and utilize resources most effectively. Also covered are issues that must be considered when conserving these manuscripts as well as the fundamental importance of surface cleaning, foldering, boxing, storage rooms and shelving, storage temperature and humidity control, cleanliness, staff and researcher training, emergency preparedness, item conservation and digitization.
The Displaced Male-Image In Kaine Agary’S Yellow-Yellow, Ignatius Chukwumah
The Displaced Male-Image In Kaine Agary’S Yellow-Yellow, Ignatius Chukwumah
Ignatius Chukwumah
It has been commonly asserted that Kaine Agary’s Yellow-Yellow (2006) presents a sordid account of the deprivation of the protagonist’s subsistence livelihood by oil despoilment. This assertion is made without much regard to the repressed and manifest anxieties and desires profoundly induced in the novel’s central character by a male who is present, onto whom the absent male-figure is displaced. This article, therefore, investigates the provocations, corollaries, and correlations of the displaced male-image through its absence and presence and examines how the various offshoots of this image, whether as a father, lover, friend, autocrat or deliverer, are posited by the …

A Commentary On Business And Knowledge Opportunities For Africa’S Rise, Uzoechi Nwagbara
Dr Uzoechi Nwagbara
Fareed Zakaria’s insightful and fascinating book, The Post-American World (2008) deals with the gradual demise of America’s power and global dominance and the consequent rise of marginal or regional powers, which include Africa. Zakaria’s hypothesis about the ‘‘post- American world’’ resides principally in America’s weakening domestic and international prowess associated with her fighting prolonged wars in recent time, dwindling manufacturing scale, weakening domestic economy and the rise of Asian Tigers as well as China. This postulation also deals with the gradual manifestation of periphery countries’ potential or ability to lead the global economy with their natural endowments, rapid wave of …

Fabricating Unease: Intertextuality, The Nation And Intellectual Leadership Crisis In No Longer At Ease, Uzoechi Nwagbara
Dr Uzoechi Nwagbara
The subject matter of the nation is a usual staple on the menu of postcolonial Nigerian fiction. In this sense, the repertoire of Chinua Achebe’s art echoes an incurable preoccupation with Nigeria’s postcolonial condition as a nation. Also, this paper explores the centrality of intertextuality in the production of Achebe’s fiction, primarily his political novel about crisis plaguing intellectual leadership, No Longer at Ease (1960). Intellectual leadership deals with championing the espousal of intellectual development for societal alchemy; it also deals with mental or intellectual engagement capable of raising awareness as well as educating people about societal issues for change. …
