This dissertation analyzes the material culture, paleobotanical, and faunal remains excavated at the site of Tell Qarqur, Syria, recovered from occupational levels dating from the end of the Late Bronze Age to the Iron II period (from approximately 1200 to 700 BC). Based on archaeological evidence and ancient textual sources, many ancient Near Eastern kingdoms and polities endured social and political turmoil during the late 13th and early 12th centuries BC. Most likely caused by an unknown hostile group or groups, the destruction of monumental scale architecture and the disruption to the people of Qarqur’s agricultural and animal husbandry practices …

Archaeological exploration of the remains of the Hudson’s Bay Company Fort Vancouver and its Village (also known as “Kanaka Village”), including its demise in the 1850s, provides the means to explore a difficult but important period in history that continues to shape modern relations between indigenous peoples and other Americans. Historical archaeology provides an independent measure of the Village, supplementing and enlarging its history, and shifting the focus to its inhabitants. Exploration of the human use of space, investment in houses, and ceramics use by households offer new insights into the fur trade community. These data provide us a means …

In this paper, we report 11 AMS radiocarbon dates from 8 Prehispanic fortifications located in the Huaura Valley, central coast of Perú. Small fragments of organic material embedded in preserved mud mortar in architecture, and samples from construction layers exposed by looter’s holes were used to date architectural features without undertaking extensive excavations. These dates contribute toward refining the chronology of fort building in the valley, and provide a test for assumptions about temporal change and architectural style. The results indicate that fortifications date to at least 3 periods. These data provide a starting point for exploring the occurrence of …

Archival maps and other field records from nineteenth century surveys of the Pacific Coast of North America are examined for archaeological information using site records, historical documents and landscape characteristics as context. Over fifty archaeological and historical site locations are depicted in sketches, mapped coordinates, topographic maps and narrative text. Representing the early phase of archaeological use of the US Coast Survey materials at the National Archives, this volume demonstrates the wealth of material yet to be incorporated into West Coast research.

Paul Trout's book on animal predators and myth is well researched and presented in such a way that it is informative and entertaining. He illustrates his assertions with numerous examples of myths from ancient cultures. The content is also meant to make the reader "uncomfortable" with the idea that humans did not start out at the top of the food chain. When applicable, Trout likens myths to some modern tales of terror where humanity must face its fear of the predator in various forms, such as in modern horror and science fiction films.

The Wiawaka Holiday House on Lake George, New York is among the oldest continuously operating women’s holiday retreats in the United States. The Holiday House was founded on the grounds of a failing resort hotel at the turn of the twentieth century by wealthy women largely from industrial families to provide factory “girls” opportunities for healthful vacations in the countryside. Before the Holiday House was established, the property was the site of two resort hotels; their histories, spanning much of the nineteenth century, reflect the rise and transformations in the Adirondack resort hotel business. Pottery In The Landscape: Ceramic Analysis At The City-Kingdom Of Idalion, Cyprus, Rebecca M. Bartusewich

The ancient site of Idalion, Cyprus has a landscape dominated by two acropoleis containing sacred sites. The plain below is the location of domestic occupation. I have petrologically analyzed 45 ceramics from the domestic area and one sacred area and found that while the sacred spaces dominate the landscape, ceramics were not produced/chosen differently for the sacred area over the domestic area. The visual proximity of the sacred and the everyday seems to indicate cohesion in the social and natural landscape. The preliminary petrological analysis of pottery from Idalion has shown, thus far, that the sacred and profane are intertwined.*

Until their conquest by the Spanish in 1697, many Itza Maya occupied a large village at Tayasal, Peten, Guatemala. After the conquest, two missions were built there. The village and missions are located within 2 km of modern Flores, which was once Nojpete´n, the Itza capital, and later the Spanish presidio (fortified administrative center). Our excavations uncovered the San Bernabe´ mission on the Tayasal peninsula and defined the Late Postclassic-period (A.D. 1400–1525) occupation of the site. San Bernabe´ was established in the early 18th century as part of Spanish efforts to control indigenous populations in Peten. Our research demonstrates that …

The Wesleyan Chapel, built in 1843, was the location of the First Women’s Rights Convention held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. It is now one of several significant structures that make up the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls and Waterloo, New York. Over time, the form and the function of the Chapel building has changed – often dramatically. Archaeological investigations at the Wesleyan Chapel have revealed both the extent of these changes and information about the people associated with the property. Coffin hardware refers to both functional and decorative elements, generally metallic, used on coffins and caskets in historic mortuary contexts. Examples of coffin hardware include handles, hinges, caplifters, thumbscrews, name plates, and decorative elements. Although the British industry was well-established in the eighteenth century, the mass-produced coffin hardware industry did not take hold in North America until the middle of the nineteenth century. Coffin hardware use in North America pre-dating the establishment of a domestic industry is not unknown; it is, however, uncommon, and generally has been associated with the burials of high social status or wealthy individuals.
