Meta-Narrative Review Of Gender Portrayal In Disney Movies For Young Children And Its Pedagogical Implications, Xuan Jiang, Linlin Zhang, Diana Rivero, Brittany Torres
Meta-Narrative Review Of Gender Portrayal In Disney Movies For Young Children And Its Pedagogical Implications, Xuan Jiang, Linlin Zhang, Diana Rivero, Brittany Torres
Journal of Global Education and Research
Many of Disney movies have been criticized for perpetuating traditional gender stereotypes which constrain opportunities for children at large. Its recent characters have also incurred heated discussions on gender portrayal. Moreover, stereotypes of gender roles, developed early on, can exert an immediate impact on individuals’ behaviors and utterances and a long-term impact on individuals’ perceived options academically, professionally, personally, and socially. Recognizing the significance of this matter, this paper employed a meta-narrative review to collect and conceptually and empirically synthesize previous literature on the impact of Disney movies on young children’s gender awareness. Through an academic database search, 49 articles …
Black Transnationalism And Diaspora In Hip Hop: An Analysis Of Billy Woods’ “Asylum”, Rayli Dornan
Black Transnationalism And Diaspora In Hip Hop: An Analysis Of Billy Woods’ “Asylum”, Rayli Dornan
Anthós
This paper examines Billy Woods' 2022 song, "Asylum" from the album Aethiopes, situating it between the frameworks of Black transnationalism and diaspora. Woods critiques colonialism and constructs a collective Black cultural identity through lyricism and sampling, despite the universally destructive effects of colonialism. The methodology of this paper involves close reading and listening to "Asylum," supported by theoretical perspectives on Black transnationalism and diaspora. This research also incorporates historical context and Woods' personal background to frame the song's narrative. Key materials include the song's lyrics, its samples, and relevant academic literature on colonialism and Black identity. "Asylum" critiques colonialism …
Literary Lepidopterology: Nabokov And The Book That Was A Butterfly, Dave Patterson
Literary Lepidopterology: Nabokov And The Book That Was A Butterfly, Dave Patterson
Anthós
In this paper I examine Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, arguing that contrary to many interpretations, the book does not assert a moral lesson, and is instead a work of art for art’s sake. I examine its formal structures to demonstrate this claim. First I look at a Doppelgänger motif between the characters of Humbert Humbert and Clare Quilty. Since this motif is independent of Humbert’s character arc, it is narratively insignificant and becomes merely one of many themes related to doubles, twins, and mirror images. I also explain how Nabokov was a lifelong scientist studying butterflies and moths, and saw …

`The Very Beautiful Principles Of Natural Philosophy': Michael Faraday, Paper Marbling And The Physics Of Natural Forms, Robert Pepperell
`The Very Beautiful Principles Of Natural Philosophy': Michael Faraday, Paper Marbling And The Physics Of Natural Forms, Robert Pepperell
LASER Journal
In 1854, Michael Faraday wrote to thank the author who had sent him a book on the art of paper marbling. In the letter, Faraday referred to `the very beautiful principles of natural philosophy' involved in the process of dropping ink on thickened water. What are the `beautiful principles' that Faraday referred to, and how are they involved in the art of paper marbling? Here I consider some of the physical processes that occur in paper marbling and how the patterns that emerge represent `dissipative structures' that are governed by fundamental principles of nature, in particular the tendency for physical …

Word Concreteness And Word Originality: A Basque Case Study, Casey Kennington
Word Concreteness And Word Originality: A Basque Case Study, Casey Kennington
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
Basque is the oldest known spoken language of Western Europe that is not descended from Indo-European. Despite efforts to stop its use from external influences, the Basque people have shown resiliency throughout their history to keep the language alive. However, as is the case with all other languages, Basque has not been immune to influence from neighboring languages; indeed all Basque speakers are bilingual. The question explored here is whether a word’s concreteness using machine translation from Basque to English and English concreteness scores determines if an original Basque word is spoken today. We find that there is a significant …

The History Of Usac: Innovation And Relationship Building, Carmelo Urza
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
Before the arrival of the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC), the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) had a long history of study abroad involvement. From the 1960s-1980s, there were several internal initiatives to create programs in Mexico, London, Italy, Korea and Turkey. None survived in the long term.
Basque Identity In The 21st Century: Up Close No One Is Normal, Julieta Gaztañaga
Basque Identity In The 21st Century: Up Close No One Is Normal, Julieta Gaztañaga
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
A dynamic conception of identity is not about asserting traits or searching for primordial essences but about the processes and contexts of its dynamic and living production including its social futures. Looking forward to contributing to Basque Studies this article offers an analysis of the complexities of contemporary reconfigurations of identification processes by focusing on the problem of Basque identity in the 21st century. I propose an approach not linked to the "Homeland/Diaspora" model but rather to a form of multifaceted and trans-local dynamics that arises from interaction with multiple places and contexts of cultural production and collective identification. The …
Moral Economy Of The Frontiers: Precarious Healthcare In Malinau, Anwar B. Arifin
Moral Economy Of The Frontiers: Precarious Healthcare In Malinau, Anwar B. Arifin
Antropologi Indonesia
The precarity of a nation’s healthcare system often shows its true colours in remote areas, including the frontiers. This lack of stability is also seen in Malinau, where inaccessibility due to inadequate infrastructure leads to a shortage of basic medicines and necessary medical equipment. Coupled with limited healthcare workers, doctors and nurses frequently encounter situations in which they are unable to take care of patients properly. This creates a specific form of moral economy that is inevitably shaped by medical infrastructure. While moral economy in healthcare does not break any new grounds, there is room to explore the dynamics of …

Elusive Shift: How Role-Playing Games Forged Their Identity [Reseña], Edgar Meritano
Journal of Roleplaying Studies and STEAM
Elusive Shift: How Role-Playing Games Forged Their Identity by Jon Peterson traces the history and evolution of role-playing games (RPGs), from their roots in wargames to their establishment as a distinct genre. The book examines how RPGs have shifted from focusing on simulating physical conflict to emphasizing character creation and collaborative storytelling, exploring the role of the game master, ethical decision-making within the game world, and the philosophical implications of the gaming experience. Peterson also explores the maturity of RPGs over time, highlighting the development of invisible systems and the elusive shift that has solidified the unique identity of RPGs. …
Estética Relacional De Los Juegos De Rol., Juan Manuel Díaz
Estética Relacional De Los Juegos De Rol., Juan Manuel Díaz
Journal of Roleplaying Studies and STEAM
Performatividad, Perspectiva Lúdica Y Ciborgs Políticos En Monsterhearts, Sebastián A. Fernández Vilches
Performatividad, Perspectiva Lúdica Y Ciborgs Políticos En Monsterhearts, Sebastián A. Fernández Vilches
Journal of Roleplaying Studies and STEAM

Journal of Roleplaying Studies and STEAM

Las Figuras De Juegos De Rol Como Soporte Para La Apropiación De Personajes, Roberto Adrián García Madrid, Blanca Estela Lopez Perez
Journal of Roleplaying Studies and STEAM

Placing Student Success And Well-Being At The Center Of The Educational Process: How The Magic City Acceptance Academy Promotes An Ethical And Caring School Culture, D. Keith Gurley, Dwayne White, Matthew Fifolt Dr.
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
Schools and school leaders are well-positioned to create school cultures that are supportive of all students, including students who identify as LGBTQ and those who are perceived as other due to status of race, class, or ability. The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to explore how faculty and staff at the Magic City Acceptance Academy (MCAA) promote an ethical and caring school culture. To guide our thinking and interpretation of research findings, our team relied on two conceptual frameworks, including queer theory and the ethical educational leadership framework ethic of care. Based on inductive coding of focus …
