Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award

Utilizing Gloria Anzaldúa’s Autohistoria-teoría methodology, this humanistic study explores embodied experiences in the education system, guided by the question, What does the absence of my history do to my identity and pride? Theorizing across historical and personal contexts, I weave together personal archival materials, including school test scores, magical thinking, storytelling, and historical legacies of colonialism and American education. Inspired by Anzaldúa’s method of inquiry, I explore the relationship between identity and education by theorizing the reverberations between history and personal/collective experience.

Originally marketed towards older adults followed by children, adaptive fashion greatly impacts the everyday independence of all disabled people. Utilizing the Person-Environment-Occupation model and understanding the relationship between the disabled community, clothing, and occupational participation and again with the fashion company, the designer, and their fulfillment of a need or gap in accessibility lead to the purpose of this capstone of identifying occupational therapy’s role in designing ready-to-wear adaptive clothing through understanding and bridging the gaps in fashion education for designers. This zine serves to raise awareness about gender inequality in South Asia as it relates to education. In South Asia, women are more likely than men to have not received an education. This zine highlights the barriers that young women face in accessing a quality education, as well as how this issue is being addressed. It provides readers with additional resources and information on how they can get involved.

“Work it Women!” covers various topics surrounding women in the workplace. The zine begins with a note from the authors, followed by a brief history of women in the workplace. Throughout the entire zine, there are historic facts, examples of successful women in the specific topics presented in the zine, and an overall theme of theme encouragement. The goal with this zine is to educate the reader on what women in the workplace experience, but not to discourage the reader from wanting to be a successful woman.

Finding Aids

Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1959. Her early years were spent in Brooklyn and Manalapan, New Jersey. As a young adult she traveled west to study journalism at the University of Missouri, earning a degree in labor history. Caryn received her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas, and she has trained in organizational development and group process, grassroots organizing, poetry therapy, and teaching yoga. She is the recipient of Kansas Arts Fellowship in Poetry, the Rocky Mountain National Park artist-in-residency, and other honors.
