Marvin Ellison is a 69 year old gay man originally from Knoxville, Tennessee. He earned his bachelors degree in Religion at Davidson College. He then went on to get his Masters in Religion and Society at The Divinity School at the University of Chicago. Ellison then got his PhD in Christian Ethics at the Union Theological Seminary in New York. He was a professor of Christian Ethics at Bangor Theological Seminary from 1981-2012. Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection

Rich Waitzkin is a 69-year-old social worker originally from Akron, Ohio residing in Portland, ME. Waitzkin came out as a gay man in his late twenties after moving to Maine. He holds two Masters degrees in both education and social work. Waitzkin has years of experience working both in administration and in the home health care field providing therapy to the LGBTQ community. During the AIDS epidemic, Waitzkin worked as a social worker helping to guide clients on resources and even preparing some for death. Waitzkin also helped establish Portland’s first LGBTQ community center known as the Equality Community Center. …

J. Remi Dionne is a 42-year-old educator and was born in Northampton, MA but currently residing in Portland, ME with his husband. He spent some time as a professional dancer, touring and performing around the country and the world. J. discovered a passion for education, holding positions in both teaching and administration. He is currently a principal intern at Westbrook High School and is finishing up a post-graduate education leadership program at University of Southern Maine.

She grew up on a farm in the country and became the financial support for her family after her mother died and her father became “emaciated.” When Putin came to power, diplomatic ties deteriorated between Georgia and Russia, which eventually led to war. She fled her country using forged documents and first worked in Turkey but has now lived in Naples for nine years and regularly sends money home to her brother, who cares for their father.

The Meiji government used the Imperial Rescript on Education in order to develop nationalism and respond against the dominating presence of Western Imperialism by standardizing Meiji education and interpreting it to justify militarism.

Speech courses have been taught at the University of Maine since 1868 under Merritt Caldwell Fernald. The Department of Speech offered programs in public speaking, theater, play production, and stage direction culminating in stage productions held at the University of Maine that would provide students with the experience of putting on a production. The Department was also instrumental in establishing and overseeing radio and television stations at the University of Maine. The Department sponsored high school debating tournaments and theater workshops and competitions at the University of Maine.

The College of Agriculture was established at the University of Maine in 1868 and went on to provide courses on animal husbandry, farm management, forestry, dietetics, household management, handwork, childcare and child welfare, home economics education, history and economics of agriculture, food processing, and horticulture. Today, many of the responsibilities of the former College are carried out by the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture and Cooperative Extension Service, which is now a separate department.

The University of Maine first established an active development fund in 1959. Its efforts were directed by the University of Maine Development Council (which later became the President's Development Council). Funds raised by the Development Office were used for a range of activities including: library facilities, student financial aid, scholarships, graduate fellowships, chair and professorships, construction projects, and teaching equipment.
