A Practical Approach For The Applied Voice Instructor Utilizing Limited Piano Skills In The Studio Setting, Lee Whittington Ousley Jul 2021

A Practical Approach For The Applied Voice Instructor Utilizing Limited Piano Skills In The Studio Setting, Lee Whittington Ousley

Theses and Dissertations

Providing a process for reducing accompaniments to commonly assigned undergraduate vocal repertoire could aid instructors with limited piano skills in the applied studio setting. Through the use of questionnaires and an online survey, it was determined that there is a population of undergraduate instructors of voice that do not have an accompanist present to play during student lessons. Without an accompanist, many teachers are unable to play the pieces as written, which warrants the creation of reduced scores as useful alternatives to pre-recorded tracks.

An online survey was distributed to determine if the population of teachers was significant enough to …

Musical Irony In Selected Piano Sonatas By Ludwig Van Beethoven, Andrew J. Hochler May 2021

Musical Irony In Selected Piano Sonatas By Ludwig Van Beethoven, Andrew J. Hochler

Theses and Dissertations

In the third variation of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in C Minor, Op. 111, there is an abrupt shift in rhythms that almost resembles an excerpt of early jazz. This passage is so seemingly out of place that it appears to be an ironic commentary on the music that came before. This variation thereby raises an interesting question: how can irony play a role in music?

In an attempt to answer this question, this thesis examines the aesthetic property of irony, suggesting ways in which might be understood to impact three piano sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven: namely, his …

A Pedagogical Analysis Of Dvořák’S Poetic Tone Pictures, Op. 85, Nathan Macavoy

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to pedagogically analyze each of Antonìn Dvořák’s (1841-1904) Poetic Tone Pictures (op. 85) for both technical and artistic challenges. Historical and theoretical analysis give context but are limited so that the pedagogical value of the set can be fully explored.

Poetic Tone Pictures is a set of thirteen programmatic character pieces that were originally popular but have been overlooked in recent history. This is largely due to Dvořák scholars’ discrediting attitude toward his solo piano writing. The recent interest in recording his piano works has brought Poetic Tone Pictures positive critical reviews. This study …

Codification Of Terminology And Procedure In Mental Practice With Applications To Piano Pedagogy, Anna Beth Rucker Apr 2019

Codification Of Terminology And Procedure In Mental Practice With Applications To Piano Pedagogy, Anna Beth Rucker

Theses and Dissertations

Mental practice has been discussed among piano pedagogues from the nineteenth century until the present. Over time, many terms have been used to describe different kinds of mental practice. This variety can make it challenging for the independent teacher to consolidate the information and effectively apply mental practice to the private lesson. For this reason, a codification of the terms associated with mental practice is presented in this thesis. Terms are classified into four groups: Visualization (kinesthetic imagery and musical imagery), Aural (aural imagery and audiation), Psychological (mental wellness and guided imagery), and Hybrid (practice away from the piano and …

Forgotten Russian Piano Music: The Sonatas Of Anatoly Aleksandrov, Irina Pevzner Jan 2013

Forgotten Russian Piano Music: The Sonatas Of Anatoly Aleksandrov, Irina Pevzner

Theses and Dissertations

This historical and analytical study focuses on the piano sonatas of Anatoly Aleksandrov (1888-1982), the longest-living Russian and Soviet composer-pianist of the twentieth century. The fourteen piano sonatas, written between 1922 and 1971, reflect not only the composer's evolution of style, but also reveal the vast array of influences which characterize the music of the twentieth century. Chromaticism that results from stretched harmonic sequences, strong melodic lyricism that threads these epic compositions, rich writing for piano, and hints of Russian folklore all contribute to the composer's original style, which synthesizes Aleksandrov's four main figures of influence, namely Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Medtner, …
