As If It Were One Day, Megan Rowley Stern Apr 2024

As If It Were One Day, Megan Rowley Stern

Theses and Dissertations

As If It Were One Day is a multimedia art installation that chronicles patterns of light, movement, and sound, channeling the fluidity of time within the newborn phase of familial living. After giving birth to my daughter, I spent the next seven weeks observing these elements and recording them via video. The resulting art installation acknowledges my efforts to navigate my current life as an artist and a mother, my past battle with postpartum depression, and my consequent gravitation toward light.

Affectionate Facsimiles, Julio C. Williams Jan 2024

Affectionate Facsimiles, Julio C. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The paintings in Affectionate Facsimiles are journeys into the expansiveness of color and memory via the accumulation of gestural action. Sporadic freneticism is used to archive desire and time and their relationship to identity. Thin and translucent layers are built up in bursts of intensity as palimpsests of intentioned labor.

Detritus and the Icon highlights the relationship between the figure and the monument, contrasting between the gravity of earth and the lightness of the Divine. My thesis exhibition of seven paintings, comprised of thirty seven panels, brings the banal into conversation with the age old endeavor of monument building.

Always Wednesday, Danielle Roberts Dec 2021

Always Wednesday, Danielle Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

Danielle Roberts’ work explores personal narratives. The spaces she paints radiate, simultaneously dark and luminescent. Resembling the kind of archetypes of place used in film her cinematic compositions invite the viewer into the frame. Her figures capture feelings of alienation illuminated by the unnatural existential glow of constructed contemporary light.

The Light Of Descartes In Rembrandts's Mature Self-Portraits, Melanie Kathleen Allred Mar 2020

The Light Of Descartes In Rembrandts's Mature Self-Portraits, Melanie Kathleen Allred

Theses and Dissertations

Rembrandt's use of light in his self-portraits has received an abundance of scholarly attention throughout the centuries--and for good reason. His light delights the eye and captivates the mind with its textural quality and dramatic presence. At a time of scientific inquiry and religious reformation that was reshaping the way individuals understood themselves and their relationship to God, Rembrandt's light may carry more intellectual significance than has previously been thought. Looking at Rembrandt's oeuvre of self-portraits chronologically, it is apparent that something happened in his life or in his understanding that caused him to change how he used light. A …

Kiddush Levana, The Moon Is Your Handheld Mirror, Noa Ginzburg May 2019

Kiddush Levana, The Moon Is Your Handheld Mirror, Noa Ginzburg

Noa Ginzburg is weaving cast-off and hand-made objects, lights, reflections, spells, drawings, and an abundance of knots into site-responsive installations. In her thesis, Ginzburg addresses Hieronymus Bosch’s paintings, the synergy of assemblages, repurposing of materials in the era of Anthropocene, and how notions of solidarity and indeterminacy influence her work.

Una Sensibilità Scientifica: Giacomo Balla’S Painting Of Light, 1900-1914, Luise Mahler Dec 2017

Una Sensibilità Scientifica: Giacomo Balla’S Painting Of Light, 1900-1914, Luise Mahler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how science shaped Giacomo Balla’s pioneering style of abstraction. A reconsideration of his oeuvre from 1900 to the advent of Italian Futurism demonstrates that his artistic vision of light—indebted to popular scientific imagery and what might be called "prosthetic" visual technologies—anticipated the emergent Futurist aesthetics.

Hissār, Sohail Abdullah May 2013

Hissār, Sohail Abdullah

Theses and Dissertations

Hissaar is a noun and a verb, it is the periphery and the extremities, and the walls and the fortress. And it is to encircle, to wrap and to contain. This paper is an inexhaustive account of thoughts, experiences and lessons learned, of varying forms that influence my aesthetic sensibilities, my art-value system, and my art- ethical concerns. They provide for my art the impetus for its perpetual (and perhaps circular) journey. It is about finding connections between the fraying ends of free floating ideas. The following fragments explores how words make ideas, ideas make images, images make memory; memory …

Cross-Cultural Ecotheology In The Poetry Of Li-Young Lee, Sienna Miquel Palmer Dittmer Jun 2011

Cross-Cultural Ecotheology In The Poetry Of Li-Young Lee, Sienna Miquel Palmer Dittmer

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the cross-cultural ecotheology of contemporary American poet Li-Young Lee by looking at the intersection of the human, the natural, and the sacred in his poetry. Close readings of Lee's poetic encounters with roses, persimmons, trees, wind, and light through the lens of Christianity and Daoism illustrate the way Lee is able to merge the Eastern concepts of interconnection and mutual harmony with Western ideas of sacredness and divinity. This discussion places Lee in direct conversation with modern and contemporary ecopoets who use the creative energy of language to express our moral and ethical responsibility to the world …

On A Saturday, Thoughts And Revelations, Maria Pithara

A Space For Absence, Timothy Dalton Dec 2008

A Space For Absence, Timothy Dalton

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the evolution of my work created during my two years of study at Virginia Commonwealth University. Although I touch upon my influences what I am writing is a reflection after the fact that does not necessarily encompass my original intent or inspirations for these works. I find my inspiration from personal discoveries within my daily life. Light flickering through the rails of a fence as I walk by makes me more aware of my body's movement in space. Watching the steady condensation of water droplets forming on a fountain creates a moment of pause within the …

Moments Of Absorption, Sarah K. Kaufman Jan 2008

Moments Of Absorption, Sarah K. Kaufman

Theses and Dissertations

Moments of Absorption explores the conceptual and visual themes that are presented in my MFA thesis exhibition. The research looks into the absorption of the nude subject, the gestures that communicate this absorption, and the domestic space as a stage for the presentation of these gestures. This work investigates a tension between the theatrical and the natural as represented by images.

Lighting The Box,Daylighting As The Primary Organizer In Multifamily Housing, Sara Lovette Jan 2008

Lighting The Box,Daylighting As The Primary Organizer In Multifamily Housing, Sara Lovette

Theses and Dissertations

This project started out as program for multi-family housing with a need for natural light, then, it changed. Through countless studies, it became evident that what started as an animal made up of bones and tissues was really just the vessel for the animal's soul. Light is the soul of design. The program represents the tissue and bones of the animal that is design. In this project two paths were taken. The first being pragmatic, the design bound by the program. Where in the second, the concept, light, beats up the program and ultimately makes for an inspiring place to live.

Llum: Light And Reflection, Kazue Taguchi Jan 2007

Llum: Light And Reflection, Kazue Taguchi

Theses and Dissertations

When I was nineteen years old, I traveled to ten countries in Europe. While there, I visited many museums and monuments, but it was in the solemn churches that I first saw stained glass and my aesthetic awakening occurred. My first impression was of a "living painting". By this I mean that a stained glass window is a non-static painting, as its appearance is dependant on the quality of light that shines though its panes. The same stained glass window looks different in the morning, evening and night. It has one color scheme on a sunny day and another on …
