Biographies In Stone: Gravestone Iconography, Symbolism And Epitaphs In The American Southwest, Deborah Ann Cogan

Theses Digitization Project

This study incorporated a series of photographs taken on cemetery sites, census records, death cards, and epitaphs of the 18th and 19th centuries in the southeast. This data was then deciphered to reveal the possible biographies of the deceased individuals in Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia due to their rich abundance of 18th and 19th century cemeteries, public records, and historical societies. Can gravestone markers truly depict the whole sum of a person's life? Some gravestone markers exhibit an entire range of iconographic images, symbols, and epitaphs allowing the viewer to decipher information about the deceased.

Visualizing Hate: Maus As Holocaust Literature, Geoffrey Daniel Curran Jan 2013

Visualizing Hate: Maus As Holocaust Literature, Geoffrey Daniel Curran

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how Art Spiegelman's graphic novel Maus affected traditional classifications of Holocaust writings, specifically literary memoir. Genre studies use Holocaust writings especially those classified as "literary memoirs", to define a narrow group to exclusion of texts like Maus. If Maus was not 'allowed' to be defined as memoir then was it solely cast as fiction? To view it as fictional would have denied that Maus was a graphic novel which interlaces both received testimonial 'truth' and receptive 'truth'.

An Investigation Of Air Resistance On Projectile Motion From Aristotle To Euler, Michael Edward Clayton Jan 2012

An Investigation Of Air Resistance On Projectile Motion From Aristotle To Euler, Michael Edward Clayton

Theses Digitization Project

From antiquity until today, mathematicians have tried to develop a theory of projectile motion. The development of a theory of projectile motion began with just a basic observation of motion by the great Greek mathematician Aristotle and has evolved to become more than conjecture or hypothesis, but a well developed science of prediciting the flight and accuracy of a projectile in motion. This thesis traces the development of the theory of projectile motion from Greek antiquity to about the mid 1700's.

The Development Of Political Secularism In A Nascent State, Tabassum Farooqui Jan 2012

The Development Of Political Secularism In A Nascent State, Tabassum Farooqui

Theses Digitization Project

This study will explore the rise, fall and revival of political secularism in Bangladesh. The exclusion or inclusion of political secularism is a controversial issue in many nascent states, because political groups often use religion as a political tool to manipulate the masses. In some newly-independent states, religious sentiment of citizens may be manipulated by different regimes; yet, the unique style of adopting religion may or may not increase religious tolerance in government.

A Study Of Democracy In Africa: The Senegalese Experience, Ryan Robert Riley

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis examines the development of democracy in Senegal, one of the few democracies in Africa. In order to understand why democracy has been such a challenge to establish and maintain in Africa, it is necessary to account for the broad effects of European colonization. European powers in their attempts to "modernize" the people of Africa disrupted their natural cultural progress.
