Relic Hunter — A Student Multidisciplinary Video Game Development Project, Sam Nielson, Seth Holladay, Justin Kunz Jun 2017

Relic Hunter — A Student Multidisciplinary Video Game Development Project, Sam Nielson, Seth Holladay, Justin Kunz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

We set out with the objectives to create a fully-working slice of a video game, to develop art pieces for students’ portfolio pieces, to help students develop leadership and team skills, and give our students a chance to collaboratively work out the interlocking bits of knowledge necessary for something as complicated as a game project. In addition, we hoped the project would help students develop professional relationships, and create mentoring opportunities for students on future projects. The project hit all of these objectives and even exceeded in some areas. The most important target was to have the students bring their …

The Essay Genome Project, Patrick Madden Jun 2017

The Essay Genome Project, Patrick Madden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project utilized computational analysis to evaluate essays. Through stylometry, the study of writing style, the team studied essayists’ work to delineate writerly heritage, to identify potential authorship, and to recognize trends and answer questions about literary genre. From our analysis, we were able to identify preliminary points of demarcation among essayists due to style, time period, location, and subgenre. The primary subgenre which we examined over the course of the project was the “lyric essay,” a recently popular form which has uncertain characteristics we wanted to elucidate. As we examined essays classified as “lyric” we were able to corroborate …

Without funding there would be no Sophie project, which is why the first item in this report on the Sophie activities during 2015 must be an expression of our gratitude to both the ORCA office and to the College of Humanities, on behalf of the faculty members involved, and particularly, on behalf of the many students whose lives have been enriched in numerous ways by their Sophie work. We are aware of the many projects vying for your attention and funding, and are particularly grateful for the support you have given this project over the years. Your grants have enriched …

Victorian Short Fiction Project, Leslee Thorne-Murphy Jun 2017

Victorian Short Fiction Project, Leslee Thorne-Murphy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Our project was to prepare a digital collection of short stories, The Victorian Short Fiction Project (VSFP), for a scholarly review process. The VSFP is a digital anthology of Victorian-era short stories compiled and edited by students in undergraduate Victorian literature classes here at BYU. Leslee Thorne-Murphy designed the project to expand students’ knowledge of the Victorian-era short story, an under-studied genre in the field of Victorian literature, and to give them experience in the fields of scholarly editing and the digital humanities. Students would conduct research in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections library to find short fiction to …

Dorothy Wordsworth’S Travel Writings: A Digital Critical Edition, Nicholas Mason

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Thanks to the MEG award we received in 2014-15, my colleague Paul Westover and I have been able to mentor six outstanding BYU students in archival research and scholarly editing and have made significant progress toward the publication of a major new critical edition of the works of the nineteenth-century poet and diarist Dorothy Wordsworth.

Le Mauvais Curé: Priests And Parishioners In Eighteenth-Century France, Justine Carr, Karen Carter Jun 2017

Le Mauvais Curé: Priests And Parishioners In Eighteenth-Century France, Justine Carr, Karen Carter

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In France during the 18th century, parish priests had a very particular relationship with their parishioners. While the parishioners were dependent on the priest to receive the different Catholic sacraments, the priests, usually underpaid, depended on the parishioners to provide them with food and money. In the small town of Mareuil-sur-Ay, Champagne-Ardenne, France, in the mid-eighteenth century, the parishioners were not pleased when their beloved priest Antoine Corbier died and was replaced by Nicolas-Hyacinthe Vernier. While the parishioners had been very satisfied with Corbier’s work, they soon became quite unsatisfied, shocked, and even angry at Vernier’s attitude, lifestyle, and his …

Baroque Performance, Anne Bennion, Alexander Woods Jun 2017

Baroque Performance, Anne Bennion, Alexander Woods

Journal of Undergraduate Research

For my project, I learned and performed Bach Violin Sonata No. 2 in A minor on baroque violin and performed it in a community recital. In the Baroque era, the violin was strung with gut strings and played with a shorter, lighter bow. This instrument was ideal for the Baroque style of music which calls for quick articulations, and a more buoyant tone. But overtime the instrument evolved into the modern violin which has greater tension in steel strings tuned a half-step higher, and played with a longer, heavier bow. This allows the violin to produce a larger sound, but …

Change For Women, Change The World, Kiana Stewart, Dr. Daryl Lee Jun 2017

Change For Women, Change The World, Kiana Stewart, Dr. Daryl Lee

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project goal was to translate from French to English significant chapters of a study on gender-based violence (GBV) in Senegal documented by Dr. Fatou Diop Sall. Dr Sall is the head coordinator of GESTES, a Senegalese research group focused on gender equality. A previous group of BYU students and ORCA recipients translated sections of the document that focused on domestic violence, and published the translation with the WomanStats Project, which is the largest statistical database regarding the status of women in the world (Hudson, 2015). The chapters I translated deal with GBV in different spheres, specifically educational spaces (schools, …

Francophone Mountain Men And Their Influence On The Mormon Settlement Of Utah, Kenneth Bedwell, Jay Buckley Jun 2017

Francophone Mountain Men And Their Influence On The Mormon Settlement Of Utah, Kenneth Bedwell, Jay Buckley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Mormons’ success in the settlement of the region can be contributed to the massive influx of migrants that emigrated into the region as well as the convenience of the buffer zone in which they settled between the two tribes. However, by searching deeper into the history of the area within the development of the fur trade, the mountain men played a considerable role in the success of the Mormon settlement. Before the arrival of the Mormon pioneers, Francophone mountain men and Indian Nations of the Great Basin and Rocky Mountains participated in a vast trade network. Etienne Provost, Peter …

A Makeup Artist’S Guide To Mastery The Standard Procedure, Michaela Fordham, Mary Farahnakian Jun 2017

A Makeup Artist’S Guide To Mastery The Standard Procedure, Michaela Fordham, Mary Farahnakian

Journal of Undergraduate Research

It is a rare opportunity to be able to study makeup design in a collegiate setting, especially one of Brigham Young University’s standard. Because I have the unique perspective of approaching makeup with an academic perspective, I wanted outside research to aid my personal career pursuit as well as explore the different jobs in the makeup industry. I wanted to find the common standards of procedures within different fields to compile a presentation for other makeup artists as well as inform others of Brigham Young University’s excellent program.

“Sometimes You Have To Be A Little Bit Naughty”: Matilda The Musical Through A Feminist Lens, Kristin Perkins, Megan Sanborn Jones Jun 2017

“Sometimes You Have To Be A Little Bit Naughty”: Matilda The Musical Through A Feminist Lens, Kristin Perkins, Megan Sanborn Jones

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My research analyzed the popular musical Matilda to dissect and explicate underlying feminist ideologies. The grant went primarily to helping fund a trip to New York City where I was able to watch Matilda the Musical as well as helping to fund my trip to present my research at a conference in Chicago. This project has yielded two conference presentations thus far and I am continuing to work towards fulfilling my Honors Thesis requirement using this as my research topic.

Ethnography Of Dance Pedagogy Traditions: Chinese Dance Culture Compared To Eurocentric Dance Culture, Caitlin Shill, Marilyn Berrett Jun 2017

Ethnography Of Dance Pedagogy Traditions: Chinese Dance Culture Compared To Eurocentric Dance Culture, Caitlin Shill, Marilyn Berrett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project’s purpose was to analyze the traditions, customs and philosophies of professors at the College of Dance at Beijing Mingzu University during Brigham Young University’s China dance study abroad. Recording and analyzing their pedagogical practices informed our own theories on the optimal balance between nurturing artistic development while preserving technical traditions. The globalization of the world’s dance community has revolutionized teaching philosophies. The international standard for dance pedagogy and technique for professional dancers continues to defy preceding theories as pedagogical practices are shared and incorporated into various training systems. China has consistently produced some of the world’s best technicians …

Attending Study Abroad In Vienna, Austria, Zachary Adamson, Dr. Scott Holden Jun 2017

Attending Study Abroad In Vienna, Austria, Zachary Adamson, Dr. Scott Holden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Throughout my life, music has been a source for mental development, spiritual growth and enjoyment. It has been at times both exciting and discouraging. As I completed my project, however, and engaged in the struggle to understand music, perform music and connect with others around me, I developed a greater vision of how music unifies the human experience, creating a positive influence on society. Specifically, I learned that valuing the arts is extremely advantageous for a society, and Vienna is a case in point; I learned specific techniques in piano playing, a kind of common legacy and style shared by …

Kreisleriana And E.T.A. Hoffman: Literary Influences On The Works Of Robert Schumann, Alissa Freeman, Scott Holden Jun 2017

Kreisleriana And E.T.A. Hoffman: Literary Influences On The Works Of Robert Schumann, Alissa Freeman, Scott Holden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Robert Schumann is one of the most renowned composers of the romantic era, but only those who have studied his life realize that he also made enormous contributions to the world of literature. Through both his compositions and his own writings, Schumann was able to pay homage to many of his most beloved writers. The goal of my project was to learn more about Schumann’s connection to the writer E.T.A. Hoffmann through the piece Kreisleriana, which is one of Schumann’s quintessential pieces for solo piano. This piece was inspired and modeled off of several novels and writings by Hoffmann, …

Advocating For The Music Of Villa-Lobos, Forrest Howell, Dr. Scott Holden Jun 2017

Advocating For The Music Of Villa-Lobos, Forrest Howell, Dr. Scott Holden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My ORCA project was an in depth study of the Brazilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos. Villa-Lobos is revered in Brazil as the father of Brazilian classical music. What is not well understood, however, is the major contribution that Villa-Lobos made to music pedagogy and even to public policy related to music education in the public school systems. Many of the composer’s writings are inaccessible to the general public. As part of my project, I visited the Villa-Lobos Museum in Rio de Janeiro. I translated important pedagogical writings from Portuguese to English, studied correspondences between Villa-Lobos and the Brazilian federal government, and …

One Fold, One Shepherd, Christopher Madsen, Rosalind Hall Jun 2017

One Fold, One Shepherd, Christopher Madsen, Rosalind Hall

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project proposal was to compose and perform a sacred work for choir, soloists, piano, and select instruments in the Classical music style using text concerning the coming of Christ to the Nephites in the Book of Mormon and written in English, Spanish, and German. I am happy to report that in the course of the last year, I have performed premiere performances of the work (One Fold, One Shepherd) in English and German.

Of Angles And Angels: Political Unity And Spiritual Identity In Anglo-Saxon England, 871 – 1016, Susannah Morrison, Miranda Wilcox

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project examined the development of English nationalism in the ninth and tenth centuries. Prior to this moment in the island’s history, England had been divided into a series of independent and self-governing kingdoms, including Mercia in the Midlands, Wessex in the West Country, Northumbria, stretching from the Humber River north into southeastern Scotland, and East Anglia in modern-day Norfolk and Suffolk. However, under the pressure of violent Viking expansion, these ancient kingdoms were largely dissolved. Only Wessex, under the leadership of the legendary Alfred the Great, survived essentially intact, and able to exert its cultural and political hegemony over …

Karl May’S Amerika German Intellectual Imperialism, Seth Cannon, Robert Mcfarland Jun 2017

Karl May’S Amerika German Intellectual Imperialism, Seth Cannon, Robert Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

From Columbus to the Spaghetti Westerns of the 20th century Europeans have manipulated and sculpted America to reflect their values and priorities. Germans in particular have developed a strange fascination with America, specifically the American West. This “America” is, however, largely an intellectual construct, heavily influenced by the nineteenth-century author of juvenile, cowboy literature Karl May. Myriad Germans have devoured his novels for more than a century, making him one of Germany’s most read authors. Although many other German authors have written Wild West novels, no other novelist has been able to supplant Karl May’s reigning popularity. The durability of …

Ethnographic Observation Of Dance Pedagogy At The Minzu University For The China Dance Study Abroad, Emily Bayles, Marilyn Berrett Jun 2017

Ethnographic Observation Of Dance Pedagogy At The Minzu University For The China Dance Study Abroad, Emily Bayles, Marilyn Berrett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In Asian cultures, a lack of creativity shows a hindering element to the success and progress of the Chinese dancers’ education. Keeping with tradition, the “purpose of the arts was not the making of ‘art’”1. A few methods of dance pedagogy put into action have enhanced the students’ ability to expand their knowledge and individual voice in the world of dance “rather than the creation of “perfect” art”2.

Perceptions Of Talking Time In Choir Rehearsal, D. Michael Draut, Paul Broomhead Jun 2017

Perceptions Of Talking Time In Choir Rehearsal, D. Michael Draut, Paul Broomhead

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Analyzing choir teachers’ perceptions of talking time has been a rewarding experience. I was able to collect data on how much time choir teachers spend talking during rehearsal; how choir teachers view the amount of time they spend talking; and how accurate their perceptions of time spent talking are. This study provided several answers and stirred my curiosity to develop additional questions.

Haskell Island Woodcut And Letterpress Book, Adrian Tidd, Linda Reynolds Jun 2017

Haskell Island Woodcut And Letterpress Book, Adrian Tidd, Linda Reynolds

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When the word printing is used nowadays, it generally refers to the act of sending a file via computer to a machine that sprays ink onto cheap office paper. The result of such printing is plain white paper with imagery or text laid out in a pattern of small ink dots. There is no human element or quality in this process and the result is mediocre; even if quality paper is used, there is no character in the final outcome and the ink typically rubs off with very little effort. The project I proposed was to explore older methods of …

Bass World 3: Music In St. Petersburg, Christian Hales, Eric Hansen Jun 2017

Bass World 3: Music In St. Petersburg, Christian Hales, Eric Hansen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Russia has always been known for its indelible contributions to the arts. The likes of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Rostropovich and Koussevitzky cultivated their great talents there. Eric Hansen, professor of double bass at Brigham Young University, encouraged me to use some of his connections in Russia as an opportunity to experience this rich arts culture. His friend, Artem Chirkov, is principal Bassist of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and winner of the Bradetitch International Bass Competition. Eric suggested that I make the trip to St. Petersburg to participate in Artem’s World Bass Festival because it would help to prepare me for my …

Preserving Performance Power Classifying And Publishing Notes Of Douglas Bush, Krissa Hendricks, Don Cook Jun 2017

Preserving Performance Power Classifying And Publishing Notes Of Douglas Bush, Krissa Hendricks, Don Cook

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Great performers often rely on the wisdom of other great performers to inform their musical interpretations. Understanding historical context and expert interpretations can not only make a performance more historically accurate but also more engaging. Because most of the music that performers play originates from deceased composers, performers rely heavily on secondary sources to give extramusical information about the pieces they play. Dr. Douglas Bush shared his love of music throughout his 35 years as a faculty member in BYU’s School of Music before his death in October 2013. A Bach enthusiast and organist extraordinaire, he took myriad notes about …

A Portrait Of Stanley: Preserving History Through Art, Amy Clegg, Robert Barrett Jun 2017

A Portrait Of Stanley: Preserving History Through Art, Amy Clegg, Robert Barrett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A Portrait of Stanley: Preserving History Through Art was an idea born by two of my greatest passions. My love for painting, and my love for the outdoors. By the outdoors, I mean particularly the Sawtooth Wilderness that I have grown to know and love in Stanley, Idaho. My project’s purpose was to help preserve the history of Stanley, Idaho by painting a portrait of a historical figure that would be combined in educational displays to help encourage continued appreciation and care for this beautiful region.

Putting It Together: Creating, Rehearsing, And Performing, Scott Whipple, George Nelson Jun 2017

Putting It Together: Creating, Rehearsing, And Performing, Scott Whipple, George Nelson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As a dancer the music dance theatre program, who is pursuing his goal to be on Broadway, the chance to be the dance captain for a musical is a priceless opportunity. When I was asked to be the dance captain for BYU’s stage production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, I jumped at the opportunity. Getting the chance to work closely with a director like George Nelson as well as choreographer Becky Write Phillips was something I could not pass up, even though I was taking 21 credits; it was a challenge I was willing to take on. I knew …

Looking At Concepts Of Thresholds And Talismans In Islamic Art To Create A Body Of Work, Jane Christensen, Peter Everett Jun 2017

Looking At Concepts Of Thresholds And Talismans In Islamic Art To Create A Body Of Work, Jane Christensen, Peter Everett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I have been interested in systems of structure and calculation and how those systems manifest visually. In Rosalind Krauss’ essay on grids, she discusses the function of a grid to “map reality,” or using the grid as a tool to explain and interpret. When I first read this I became intrigued by the idea that the abstract grid can transform information into a literal object; perhaps, explaining the unknown. I thought about the prominence of the grid and geometric systems found in visual culture. I had already been creating work dealing with concepts of structures and patterns that refer to …

The Culture Of British Servitude And Music, Erin Meeks, Jeff Parkin Jun 2017

The Culture Of British Servitude And Music, Erin Meeks, Jeff Parkin

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I am writing a feature-length screenplay set in Victorian England about a servant of a manor trying to bring her mother’s fairy tales to life to escape her homesickness. However, I soon realized that writing this screenplay based solely on internet articles and my love of the BBC series Downton Abbey was not going to provide the research necessary to create an authentic setting and a believable, nuanced character. For this reason, I applied for an ORCA grant to attend a six-week study abroad program with the Theater and Media Arts department so that I could gather on-site research.

Elisa Von Der Recke: Volume Iv Of The Critically Edited Collected Works Restored Sheet Music, David Seay, Dr. Michelle James Jun 2017

Elisa Von Der Recke: Volume Iv Of The Critically Edited Collected Works Restored Sheet Music, David Seay, Dr. Michelle James

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project involved recording and publishing restored music from the 18th century. BYU’s “Mentored Research Sophia Project,” led by staff within the German & Russian Department, is creating a Complete Works Anthology of Eliza von der Recke, a German poet of the 18th century. Part of the anthology will include a chapter that covers all the musical compositions that set Recke’s poetry to music. Several big name composers set Recke’s poetry to music, including CPE Bach and Carl Loewe. My contribution to the Anthology was to transcribe the all of the old printed music into modern sheet music format, and …

Dislocation: An Exploration Of Cultural Hybridization In The Arts, Aloe Corry, Peter Everett Jun 2017

Dislocation: An Exploration Of Cultural Hybridization In The Arts, Aloe Corry, Peter Everett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My exhibition, titled Out of Order, was a series of paintings and two-dimensional artworks that explored the idea of dislocation that can occur physically, mentally, and culturally. Feelings of dislocation come most often to me as I move from a space I am comfortable in to a space that I have not yet encountered, especially when I am exposed to new ideas, images, and experience. However, one of the fastest ways for me to encounter dislocation is through travel. Because of this, I decided to create most of the works for this exhibition, Out of Order, during and after a …

Tremors: A Musical Exploration Of Modern Faith, Asher Bay, Christian Asplund Jun 2017

Tremors: A Musical Exploration Of Modern Faith, Asher Bay, Christian Asplund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Under the guidance of Professor Christian Asplund, I composed and produced a concept EP addressing the complexity of modern faith. The purpose of the project was to validate trials of faith that often are otherwise unspoken in our community and to encourage people to continue authentically seeking truth, despite the pain that often transpires. The EP contains seven tracks totaling twelve minutes of music. Its Internet release is scheduled for the beginning of 2017 and will be accompanied by a listening event.
