Teaching Ethics At The Primary Level, Joseph R. Sanok
Teaching Ethics At The Primary Level, Joseph R. Sanok
Honors Theses
Over the last century, the teaching of ethics in primary schools has changed greatly. The greatest influence upon public schools has been the shift in parents' attitudes towards teaching ethics in the school setting. Parents have progressively wanted to have more control over their child's ethical learning, thus becoming more critical of the teaching of ethics within public schools. This has led to greater input from parents. Christian ethics had long been the yardstick for ethical teachings, although in 1962 in the Engel v. Vitale case, school prayer was ruled unconstitutional, removing Christian views from the school setting. As a …

The Botetourt Dragoons In War And Peace, Michael G. Henkle
The Botetourt Dragoons In War And Peace, Michael G. Henkle
Honors Theses
This thesis studies a Confederate cavalry company from the immediate prewar years through the war, ending with the death of one of its last members. Most soldiers were residents of Botetourt County, Virginia. The study focuses upon both the men themselves and the battles in which they fought. Letters, diaries, and postwar accounts reveal their thoughts. After the war, many took an active role in both veterans' affairs and their community by joining veteran camps and participating in politics. Near the end, many received pensions or stayed in old soldiers' homes.

Royal Protectors, Explorers And Thieves : Pirates Of The Elizabethan Cold War, 1558-1685, Dodie Jones
Honors Theses
Within this paper, I intend to explain the significance of Elizabethan pirates as financial and defensive assets to Elizabethan England. Because the pirates existed as plunderers and thieves, outright state support of their ventures by Parliament and the Queen is difficult to determine. Evidence indicates, however, that Queen Elizabeth I developed relationships with specific pirates, chiefly Sir John Hawkins and Sir Francis Drake. Elizabeth entrusted Hawkins and Drake to employ cold war tactics against Spain and secure England's financial stability with stolen goods. Through state documents, primary accounts, biographies, and secondary sources, I aim to explain certain aspects of the …
Bronze Sons Of The Forest On Display : Images Of American Indians At The 1898 Transmississippi And International Exposition, Josh Clough
Honors Theses
This study examines a large Indian encampment that was made part of an exposition held in Omaha, Nebraska in 1898. Relying almost exclusively on primary sources such as the two major newspapers in Omaha at the time, the World-Herald and the Bee, I attempt to uncover the diverse images cast by Indian delegates during their three month stay at the fair.· As well, I investigate reasons why Omaha seemed the perfect site to hold the Indian Congress and what incentives the natives had for attending. The long-term significance of the gathering, I conclude, lay mostly in the forum it …

The Death Of King Arthur: The Literary Evolution Of A Myth, Heather M. Lyon
Honors Theses
Around 1151, Geoffery of Monmouth, a priest at St. George's college in Oxford, completed a work known as The History of the Kings of Britain (Geoffery, Forward). Geoffery researched older texts and manuscripts in order to present what he considered an accurate account of Britain's history. In this work, Geoffery introduced King Arthur to the English and French as one of the greatest kings of Britain. His work would serve as the foundation for the French chansons de geste, or romances of chivalry, which in turn influenced Sir Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur (1469). Malory's work would go on to …

Consumed By Faith: The Development Of Christian Fundamentalism And Its Applications In Contemporary Society, Laura M. Gagne
Consumed By Faith: The Development Of Christian Fundamentalism And Its Applications In Contemporary Society, Laura M. Gagne
Honors Theses
My research aims to understand how and why fundamentalists justify violence against people who do not fit their profile of "righteous" or "saved" persons, such as abortion doctors and clinic workers, gays and lesbians, and Jews. The first section of this paper travels through the history of fundamentalism since its origins in the British and American apocalipticism, or belief in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. However, my history of Protestant Fundamentalism in the United States will focus on the ways in which Fundamentalism developed in response to many changes in American social structure. I interpret Fundamentalism as an anti-modern …
"I Have Lived Long And Variously In The World": The Politics And Rhetoric Of Edmund Burke, Amy M. Sandidge
"I Have Lived Long And Variously In The World": The Politics And Rhetoric Of Edmund Burke, Amy M. Sandidge
Honors Theses
In the words of Woodrow Wilson, the works of Edmund Burke are "stamped in the colors of his extraordinary imagination. The movement takes your breath and quickens your pulses. The glow and power of the matter rejuvenates your faculties." One cannot help but react viscerally to Burke; the brilliant, blustering Irishman demands attention and response. Some regard him as "the first and most important exponent" of the "theoretical reaction against. .. the tenets of liberalism ... [which] came to be called conservatism." Coleridge called him "a great man;" Victorian liberals even considered him a fellow utilitarian and "the greatest thinker …
Masterpiece: Computer-Generated Music Through Fractals And Genetic Theory, Amanda Broyles
Masterpiece: Computer-Generated Music Through Fractals And Genetic Theory, Amanda Broyles
Honors Theses
A wide variety of computer-generated music exists. I have writ.ten a program which will generate music by using genetic theory and fractals. The genetic theory is used to mold input pieces into a musical motif. The motif is then elaborated by the fractal formula into a composition. A brief introduction to the world of genetic theory and fractals is given. Analysis of a musical work produced in this manner shows coherent patterns and also emotion.
Christian Artists In A Postmodern Time, Donald "Donnie" Allen Copeland Jr.
Christian Artists In A Postmodern Time, Donald "Donnie" Allen Copeland Jr.
Honors Theses
The rigid rules of our traditional schools of artistic standards have been shattered. What our culture expects of artists and what artists expect of themselves has drastically changed. In this time of Postmodernism1 , any means an artist finds to express and to communicate is valid. There is no dominant school or style, no art Nazis dictating what must be the form to follow in our artistic expression.
My purpose is to take these new trends in art and to apply them to a long dormant voice in the arts, Christianity, and to see where artists who are Christian stand …
Radio's Influence On Music From 1919 To 1926, Aaron Hawley
Radio's Influence On Music From 1919 To 1926, Aaron Hawley
Honors Theses
Advances in technology have dramatically changed the lives of Americans throughout the twentieth century. Many of these advancements have become commonplace. For instance, the words "airplane," "computer," "radio," and "television" were not common a hundred years ago. Today, even small children know the definitions of these words. In addition, as new technologies develop, methods of accomplishing tasks change. These changes are then incorporated into our normal way of life. This gradual development causes many people to fail to consider the true implications of the technology on their way of life. Aspects of American's lives that used to be considered luxuries …

Salvation In Film: The Apostle, Tender Mercies, Amistad, And Sergeant York, Daniel Nipper
Honors Theses
There is a popular line of youth's paraphernalia in our culture known as "WWJD" or "What Would Jesus Do?" Film is also extremely popular in our culture . Those who keep up with film as a business will note that the top grossing movies can be found in the newspapers on a weekly basis much as sports standings are listed. Each year Hollywood augments itself by churning out more films than the previous year. So in a world in which our Christian youth are asking/ "What Would Jesus Do?" we can ask/ would Jesus have gone to the movies? Most …

American Holocaust Films: A Case Study In Jewish American Identity (1937-1993), Jeff Daniels
American Holocaust Films: A Case Study In Jewish American Identity (1937-1993), Jeff Daniels
Honors Theses
When examining the image of the Jew in American Holocaust films, one is truly determining how American Jews view themselves. These films' presentation of Jews exposes not only how Jewish Americans wished to see themselves but also how much Gentile Americans wanted to see of Jewish culture. An exploration of America's Holocaust films from the late 1930s to the early 1990s reveals an increasing concentration of Jews as the main victims of the event. The degree to which this specificity is emphasized exhibits how much the American public accepted Jews and their plight. At the same time, the prevalence of …
