This research was undertaken in the mid-1970s by Anthony M. (Tony) Kaliss to provide supporting data for use as a part of the land claims suit by the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Tribes. The suit has long been settled and the tribes were federally recognized. Both tribes had been recognized and dealt with continuously since at least the 1700s first by the Massachusetts colony, then by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a state and then the State of Maine when it separated from Massachusetts in 1820. The College of Technology provided instruction in Mining Engineering (later dropped), Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Forestry (later known as Pulp and Paper Technology). The College offered Bachelor of Science Degrees and Associate of Science Degrees. In 1973, the College was renamed the College of Engineering and Science. In 1989, departments from the College of Engineering and Science and the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture merged with the College of Sciences, resulting in College name changes for the College of Engineering and the College of Applied Sciences and Agriculture. Walter Arnold was born in 1894 in Willimantic, Maine, the son of Alonzo and Alice Arnold. As a young man Walter hunted, trapped and guided with his father. After service in World War I, he started a mail order business, selling trapping supplies and animal trapping scents and lures nationwide.

Shaw and Arnold were good friends and hunting buddies for over twenty years. They wrote letters to each other frequently from 1959-1980 discussing their day-to-day life and the hunting or trapping adventures they shared together.

Rudy Vallée was one of the most popular vocalists of the pre-swing era. With his megaphone and nasal voice, he will forever be remembered as the archetypal image of the early crooners. Born in Island Pond, Vermont, in 1901, Hubert Prior Vallée grew up in Westbrook, Maine, and earned the nickname 'Rudy' in college for his love of saxophone player, Rudy Wiedeoft.

John Jacob Nolde was born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1919 and died in 1988. He was a member of the faculty of the history department at the University of Maine and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He served the University of Maine from 1950 to 1984. During the 1940s, the University of Maine was one of many U.S. colleges and universities to offer tuition-free summer courses under the Engineering, Sciences, and Management Defense Training Program, funded by the U.S. Office of Education.

The classes were for high school graduates not planning to attend college and were intended to train students in defense activities in order to fill urgently needed technical and scientific civilian positions just prior to and during U.S. involvement in World War II.

Irwin Bruce Douglass was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1904. A scholar, teacher, researcher and humorist, Douglass became a professor of chemistry at the University of Maine at Orono in 1940 and carried out a number of studies into potato starch and the chemical process (and pollution) involved in the pulp and paper industry processes. He retired in 1972 and moved to Vermont where he died in 1998.

The record group mostly contains textual information during Douglass's tenure at the University of Maine, but there are also some photographs of events Douglass attended.
