Annotated Bibliography Of Research In The Teaching Of English, Deborah Brown, Melissa Whiting, Richard L. Larson
Faculty Publications
Twice a year, in the May and November issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Most of the studies appeared during the six-month period preceding the compilation of the bibliography (January through June, 1998, for the present bibliography), but some studies that appeared earlier are occasionally included. The listing is selective; we make no attempt to include all research and research-related studies that appeared in the period under review. Comments on the bibliography and suggestions about items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors. We encourage you to send your suggestions …
Bibliography, Cultural Studies, And Rare Book Librarianship: Tennyson's "Crossing The Bar" And The Cultural Significance Of Unauthoritative Texts, Patrick G. Scott
Bibliography, Cultural Studies, And Rare Book Librarianship: Tennyson's "Crossing The Bar" And The Cultural Significance Of Unauthoritative Texts, Patrick G. Scott
Faculty Publications
For a conference discussion of textual bibliographers and rare book librarians on the topic "Who needs textual studies?," this paper examines three different appearances of Alfred Tennyson's poem "Crossing the Bar": (1) a manuscript facsimile, (ii) its reuse as a hymn and in a giftbook; and (iii) the paperback Armed Services Edition distributed to US troops overseas during World War II, and argues that with the shift from literary studies to cultural studies such later "unauthoritative texts" have a new importance for scholars and students, and deserve increased attention from bibliographers, collectors, and rare book librarians. Originally presented at the …

The Coming Forth Of The Book Of Mormon In The Twentieth Century, Noel B. Reynolds
The Coming Forth Of The Book Of Mormon In The Twentieth Century, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
I hope this study, however preliminary it might appear, will provide a sound first step toward developing our self-understanding as Latter-day Saints of the history of Book of Mormon use in the twentieth century and the phenomenal increase in understanding, appreciation, and study that has taken place over the last three to four decades. This study may also offer one useful perspective for the gradually emerging history of cultural Mormonism and its antipathy to the Book of Mormon. This study is grounded in the analysis of a number of possible indicators of intensity of interest in the Book of Mormon …
God, Christ, And All Things In 1 Corinthians 15:28, David E. Fredrickson
God, Christ, And All Things In 1 Corinthians 15:28, David E. Fredrickson
Faculty Publications
God's becoming "all in all" requires neither God's absolute sovereignty over all things nor the absorption of God into creation. In the New Testament, as in trinitarian theology, it is better understood as a way to speak of a personal relation between Creator and creation and between the Father and the Son.
No Trinity, No Mission: The Apostolic Difference Of Revisioning The Trinity, Gary M. Simpson
No Trinity, No Mission: The Apostolic Difference Of Revisioning The Trinity, Gary M. Simpson
Faculty Publications
Moral and experiential monotheism, twin bequests of the enlightenment, have robbed recent doctrines of God of an essential apostolic difference. A revisioned formulation of the Trinity will provide good news for the modern world.
The Trinity And Congregational Planning: Between Historical Minimum And Eschatological Maximum, Patrick R. Keifert
The Trinity And Congregational Planning: Between Historical Minimum And Eschatological Maximum, Patrick R. Keifert
Faculty Publications
Most members of congregations are inattentive to both the past and the future of their congregation. They live in a very present now. An adequate doctrine of the Trinity can liberate congregations from this imprisonment in the present; it will call for visioning and planning in congregational life.

The Metaphysics of Star Trek by Richard Hanley. New York: Basic Books, 1997. xviii + 253 pp. $18.00 (cloth), ISBN 978-0-465-09124-9.
Richard Hanley's The Metaphysics of Star Trek is an engaging examination of certain philosophical issues raised within the Star Trek universe. Its title, however, is overly broad; it would be more correctly titled, The Twentieth-Century Applied Metaphysics of Star Trek. The earliest reference in the bibliography is an article written in 1950; the next earliest, 1960. The vast majority of sources are from the 1980's and …

English Loanwords In Chicano Spanish: Characterization And Rationale, Robert N. Smead
English Loanwords In Chicano Spanish: Characterization And Rationale, Robert N. Smead
Faculty Publications
One highly visible, often stigmatized feature of Chicano Spanish is lexical innovation due to intimate contact with English and the mainstream culture. As noted in table 1, these Anglicisms are the result of varying degrees of host language adaptation and integration and include at least three distinct types of innovations: the lexical switch, the loanword, and the calque.
