In spite of benefits surrounding distance education programs, many online writing courses suffer from low student completion rates. Student retention has been identified as a concern in a number of studies of online education. We extend this discussion by examining the relationship of assessment of student work to retention, and comparing the grades students receive in online and face-to-face undergraduate writing courses. Technical Communication, Participatory Action Research, And Global Civic Engagement: A Teaching, Research, And Social Action Collaboration In Kenya., Robbin D. Crabtree, David Alan Sapp

In response to recent calls for internationalization and greater social relevance in professional communication teaching and research, this article links service-learning pedagogy with participatory action research (PAR) methods. A multi-year collaborative project in Kenya illustrates both the challenges and the positive outcomes of international partnerships, which include increased intercultural communication skills, significant contributions to the literature, invigoration of teaching and curriculum, and the development of global civic awareness among all participants. In their recommendations for faculty interested in developing similar partnerships, the authors highlight the importance of understanding the theoretical foundations of servicelearning pedagogy and PAR methods, and advocate for …

A Burning Issue In Teaching: The Impact Of Perceived Teacher Burnout And Nonverbal Immediacy On Student Motivation And Affective Learning, Qin Zhang, David Alan Sapp

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of teacher burnout on student state motivation and affective learning and to test the moderating effect of teacher nonverbal immediacy. Utilizing a 2 x 2 factorial experimental design, 172 college students were exposed randomly to one of four written scenarios manipulating levels of teacher burnout (high or low) and nonverbal immediacy (high or low). Results of MANOVA indicated that teacher burnout adversely impacted student state motivation and affective learning, and teacher nonverbal immediacy mitigated the negative effect of teacher burnout on students.
