This study of the role, impact and influence of Australian chaplains during the Gallipoli campaign identifies the formal and informal roles played by chaplains, and how their work was perceived and received by the men they served. It challenges a popular view, sometimes articulated in publications, that the Australian soldier was indifferent to spiritual things and to the work of the chaplains. Instead it shows how chaplains played a vital role in providing a host of support services which could greatly impact soldier morale and emotional well-being. Listening, while frequently mentioned in the Bible, is virtually never listed as a spiritual discipline. However, the Bible has much to say about practicing it, enumerating the many benefits to be had by listening and hearing. It is a distinguishing skill of both God and Jesus. As humans, listening is a skill to be practiced toward God, toward each other and toward our own self. This article explores the biblical foundation of listening and some of its benefits and implications.

This study explores the attitude of Anzac soldiers to the compulsory Church Parades, drawing evidence from a reading of the diaries and letters of over a thousand soldiers. It examines the complex reactions to Church Parade and draw conclusions about the varied attitudes of soldiers who recorded attending Church Parades in their letters and diaries. Far from producing definitive evidence for the irrelevance of religion to Australian soldiers during the Great War, the study highlights the range of religious attitudes, including the surprising number of soldiers who recorded positive responses to these parades. The interaction of scholarly history with popular history has provoked debate over the value and place of the latter in creating historical consciousness. The various issues meet conveniently in the Aubrey-Maturin novels of Patrick O’Brian and the Peter Weir film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003). Using the critical work of Robert Rosenstone on historical film and David Harlan on historical fiction, it identifies ways in which the novelist and movie maker authenticate their Aubrey-Maturin fiction through a mix of historical referents and novelistic and cinematic technique.
