Wordsworth's Decline: Self-Editing And Editing The Self, Kenneth E. Morrison
Wordsworth's Decline: Self-Editing And Editing The Self, Kenneth E. Morrison
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In critical discourse surrounding the poetry of William Wordsworth, it has become generally acceptable to describe the course of the poet’s career by means of a theory of “decline.” In its most common form, this theory argues that Wordsworth’s best poetry was written during one “Great Decade” (1798-1807)—an isolated epoch of prolificacy and genius. His subsequent works, it is argued, neither surpass nor equal his initial efforts; the course of his career after 1808 may be best described in terms of declivity, ebb, and decline.
Due to its ideological complicity with the very texts it engages, and due to its …
Human Things: Rethinking Guitars And Ethnography, Matthew L. Hale
Human Things: Rethinking Guitars And Ethnography, Matthew L. Hale
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This work is about objects and their makers, their relationship, and the negotiation between tradition and innovation in the creation of things. I explore the relationship between tradition, innovation, and technology as it pertains to the creation, perception, and interaction with acoustic steel string guitars and ethnographies. First, I focus on the works of two Nashville based guitar makers, Grant and Cory Batson. I investigate the ways in which the Batsons critically evaluate traditional construction techniques and design features as they create their instruments, looking at their theories of tone production, methods of construction, and their perceptions and uses of …
Gritting Teeth: A Memoir Of Unhealthy Love, Samantha L. Day
Gritting Teeth: A Memoir Of Unhealthy Love, Samantha L. Day
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Originally intended to be modeled after Eula Biss’s creative nonfiction essay “The Balloonists”—which tackles the subject of marriage via fragmented prose poems— “Gritting Teeth: A Memoir of Unhealthy Love” is a piece that has taken on a subject and form of its own. A memoirist like Vivian Gornick might not claim the writer’s piece, as it hesitates to offer a “story” in places. A memoirist like Sue William Silverman might not claim the piece, as it hesitates to be courageous at times. But this collage of song lyrics, research snippets, and even Craigslist postings works in conjunction with fragments from …
Praise And Blame: The Rhetorical Impact Of Nineteenth-Century Conduct Manuals, Jessica Nicole Mattson
Praise And Blame: The Rhetorical Impact Of Nineteenth-Century Conduct Manuals, Jessica Nicole Mattson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The following is an exploration of the use of epideictic rhetoric strategies in nineteenth-century conduct manuals, Sarah Stickney Ellis’s The Women of England: Their Social Duties and Domestic Habits, and Harriet Martineau’s Household Education. In examining the rhetoric of the conduct manuals, this researcher has identified the audience, the rhetorical situation, the exigence of that situation, and the use of phronisis, areti, and euonia by both authors.
Because the rhetoric of the conduct manual has not been discussed in current critical perspectives, this research is a starting point for further study. The different types of rhetorical …
An Examination Of Reading Assignments In The Secondary Classroom, Rachel Elizabeth Leer
An Examination Of Reading Assignments In The Secondary Classroom, Rachel Elizabeth Leer
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this research study is to examine reading assignments given in the secondary classroom of a rural secondary school. The intention is to analyze student readiness to handle complex text found in post-secondary education and/or the workforce, based on current reading trends within the school. The research questions guiding this study focus on the average amount of reading students are expected to complete in a week, what strategic support is being provided to students to enhance comprehension of text, the methodology behind how teachers select both reading assignments and reading strategies, and finally the methodology behind how teachers …
House Of Mirrors, Lindsey Britton Westerfield
House Of Mirrors, Lindsey Britton Westerfield
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
[Partial Abstract} A mirror provides a reflection of the beholder. Not quite an exact replica, there is space and time between the original object and its reflection. Different mirrors produce different angles, lighting, tone, and mood. The mirror is a tool of reference and of introspection; of confinement and of freedom. ...
Shifting between poetry and prose, my manuscript is two-fold. I am the one holding the mirror, looking into my own face and heart, translating what I feel and see onto the page. Simultaneously, my family's hands clasp the hilt of that mirror, turning it so that I may …
Benevolent Vs. Hostile Sexism Impact On Work Performance For Women In Turkey, Crystal M. Bonneau-Kaya
Benevolent Vs. Hostile Sexism Impact On Work Performance For Women In Turkey, Crystal M. Bonneau-Kaya
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
All studies to date that have assessed the direct impact of benevolent vs. hostile sexism on performance outcomes have done so in the context of a Western society. Because of this void in the literature, it remained unknown how living in a low egalitarian and/or non-Western society may impact women's experiences of sexism. The purpose of this study is to address this gap in the literature. This study investigates the impact of benevolent vs. hostile sexism on women in four Turkish textile factories. 210 Turkish female textile factory workers were randomly assigned to the benevolent sexism, hostile sexism, or control …
