Here Comes Tomorrow--And It's Full Of Challenges, David R. Chesnutt

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Documentary editors have put technology to good use in the last twenty years. Technology has helped us:

• gain better intellectual control over our documents

• produce more accurate and reliable texts

• find information that enhances our annotation • provide better intellectual access through our indexes

In spite of the wide array of software available, most projects have never gone beyond word-processing and spreadsheet programs. Here and there the landscape is dotted with a database program or two. And a few hardy souls even took on the mainframe and used it to create indexes and bibliographies, to compare texts, …

Professionalizing Ta Training: Commitment To Teaching Or Rhetorical Response To Market Crisis?, Carrie Shively Leverenz, Amy M. Goodburn Dec 1998

Professionalizing Ta Training: Commitment To Teaching Or Rhetorical Response To Market Crisis?, Carrie Shively Leverenz, Amy M. Goodburn

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Although English Studies as a discipline is often seen as fractured and contentious, there is one subject about which most of us can agree: the job market for new PhDs in English is bad and not likely to improve any time soon. In Bettina Huber’s widely cited survey of the results of the 1993-1994 job search, only 45.9% of candidates found tenure-track jobs. The recent report from the MLA Committee on Professional Employment projects similar figures for the foreseeable future. The fact that the number of graduate students with PhDs in English—especially those with concentrations in literary studies or creative …

Review Of The Dead Sea Scrolls And The Christian Faith, Ed. James H. Charlesworth And Walter P. Weaver, Sidnie White Crawford Dec 1998

Review Of The Dead Sea Scrolls And The Christian Faith, Ed. James H. Charlesworth And Walter P. Weaver, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

"Do the Dead Sea Scrolls hinder or undermine Christian faith?" James Charlesworth asks in the preface of this volume. The four essays that follow all answer with a resounding "No!" The annual Faith and Scholarship Colloquy at Florida Southern College serves to bring together leading scholars to address the most challenging topics in contemporary biblical studies in a way that speaks to a Christian lay audience. This volume, the fifth in a series, admirably meets that goal.

"The Most Important Scholarly Work": Reflections On Twenty Years Of Change In Historical Editing, Michael E. Stevens Dec 1998

"The Most Important Scholarly Work": Reflections On Twenty Years Of Change In Historical Editing, Michael E. Stevens

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Twenty years ago, at the first annual meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing in Princeton, New Jersey, Arthur Link stated that documentary editing is "the most important scholarly work being done in the United States, and, if well done, it will be the most enduring." Last year, the distinguished historian Edmund S. Morgan echoed Link when he wrote in the Wall Street Journal that the 154 volumes produced by the Founding Fathers editions "stand as the single most important achievement of American historical scholarship in this century."

Despite this high praise, Link's and Morgan's opinions are not universally held. …

Nothing Left To Lose: Of, Changes In Literary Editing And The Decline Of Civilization As We Know It, Joel Myerson Dec 1998

Nothing Left To Lose: Of, Changes In Literary Editing And The Decline Of Civilization As We Know It, Joel Myerson

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

My title is somewhat facetious, but not completely. There has been a profound shift in the direction and underlying assumptions of editorial theory and practice during the thirty years in which I have been practicing this craft, and my purpose here is to make some general observations on this topic. I start with a warning, though: most of my comments apply to textual or literary editing, not to documentary editing as it is practiced by literary editors.

The Art Of Editorial Decision Making: Review Of Editing Historical Documents: A Handbook Of Practice (Walnut Creek, Calif.: Altamira Press, 1997). Michael E. Stevens And Steven B. Burg., Beth Luey

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

In a paper presented at the 1998 annual meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing and published in this issue of Documentary Editing, Michael Stevens discussed advances in the craft, professionalism, and legacy of the field over the past twenty years. The book that he and Steven Burg have written is an example of the interconnections among these advances. For a craft to improve, its practitioners must become more professional and reflective about their practices. For professionalism to develop, a body of knowledge and some degree of consensus about the practice of a craft must be established. And for a …

Touring Colonial America: Review Of Edward Kimber, Itinerant Observation In America, Ed. Kevin J. Hayes., Darin E. Fields

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Traveling to the colonies in 1742 at age twenty-three, young Edward Kimber embarked on what was no doubt the adventure of his life. Son of Isaac Kimber, editor of the London Magazine from 1732 to 1755, Edward had grown up around the publishing industry and was keenly aware of the public appetite for reading material. Like nearly all literate travelers of his day, but perhaps more aware than many that his travels in the colonies would furnish material for later publication, Kimber dutifully kept a journal record of his observations and experiences. His American adventure yielded literary fruit from 1743 …

Cattle, Environment, And Economic Change: A History Of Cherry County, Nebraska’S Cattle Industry, From Earliest Times To 1940, Gail Lorna Didonato

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A modern cattle industry in Cherry County, Nebraska, developed as challenges of land use and pressures of economic change demanded new and flexible adaptation to the unique environment. Located in the Sandhills, a region only opened to legal white settlement after Indian removal in 1878, the area passed through phases of occupation. Open-range cattlemen drawn by lucrative local markets gave way to struggles over land use between farmers and ranchers. Early twentieth century legislation, the 1904 Kinkaid Act, designed to promote farm settlement, in the end, benefited ranchers the most. As the wedge to gain legal access to land ownership, …

Review Of Maurice Lee, Jr., The Heiresses Of Buccleuch: Marriage, Money And Politics In Seventeenth-Century Britain, Carole Levin Oct 1998

Review Of Maurice Lee, Jr., The Heiresses Of Buccleuch: Marriage, Money And Politics In Seventeenth-Century Britain, Carole Levin

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Maurice Lee has had a distinguished career as a historian of early modern Scotland and England, particularly focusing on the career of James VI and I. His most recent book, The Heiresses of Buccleuch, is rather a departure for him in a number of ways. It is set in the later seventeenth century, and for the most part focuses on interesting but much more minor characters of court politics. Francis Scott, 2nd Earl of Buccleuch, died young after entailing his estate on his two surviving daughters, Mary and Anna. Lee describes their marriages and their ultimate destinies. ... Lee's study …

Review Of David Loades, Ed., John Foxe And The English Reformation, Carole Levin Oct 1998

Review Of David Loades, Ed., John Foxe And The English Reformation, Carole Levin

Department of History: Faculty Publications

One of the most influential books of sixteenth century England was John Foxe's Acts and Monuments, commonly known as "The Book of Martyrs." For over a hundred years what has readily been available to students has been either Stephen Cattley's or Josiah Pratt's nineteenth century editions. In 1993 the British Academy agreed to produce a complete critical edition of the work, which will be of enormous value to scholars and students. Once a director, research assistant, and committee were selected, they began to identify scholars who were doing research on Foxe and his influence. They arranged a colloquia at Cambridge …

Review Of Jews In Germany After The Holocaust: Memory, Identity, And Jewish-German Relations By Lynn Rapaport, Alan E. Steinweis Oct 1998

Review Of Jews In Germany After The Holocaust: Memory, Identity, And Jewish-German Relations By Lynn Rapaport, Alan E. Steinweis

Department of History: Faculty Publications

This book is a major addition to the small, but growing, body of scholarship about Jewish life in post-World War II Germany. Rapaport presents a richly textured portrait of Jewish daily life, focusing primarily on the processes that produce and preserve a sense of Jewish identity. ... According to Rapaport, collective historical memory, not religion, has been the crucial factor in shaping the identity of these post-Holocaust Jews. The central event in that memory is the Holocaust. In response to critics who have argued that the attention of Jews in the contemporary world is excessively and unhealthily focused on the …

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko, 1853-1921, Radha Balasubramanian Sep 1998

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko, 1853-1921, Radha Balasubramanian

Russian Language and Literature Papers

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko is well known not only as a publicist and a humanitarian, but also as a writer. His voluminous publicistic writing, based on his service to the people, championed truth and justice. It ranges from exposing activities of the local gentry in their manipulation of the city’s bank, court, and local zemstvo, to condemning the revolutionaries openly, after they took over power, for not complying with the law and for forcing changes too rapidly. As a writer of fiction, Korolenko’s contribution to Russian narrative prose is in the form of short stories.

Lady Wisdom And Dame Folly At Qumran, Sidnie White Crawford Sep 1998

Lady Wisdom And Dame Folly At Qumran, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The female figures of Lady Wisdom and Dame Folly, found in the postexilic Wisdom literature, have always attracted much debate and speculation. The questions of who they are and what they stand for, particularly in the case of Lady Wisdom, have been hotly debated. Is she merely a literary creation, driven by the fact that the nouns for wisdom in Hebrew and Greek, חכמה and σοφία, are feminine in gender? Or is she an actual divine figure, a female hypostasis of Yahweh, the god of Israel, indicating a female divine presence in Israelite religion? These debates have yet to be …

So You Think You Need A Web Page? Designing World Wide Web Access To Documentary Editing Projects, Cathy Moran Hajo

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The World Wide Web is rapidly becoming the first place that researchers and the curious look when they are interested in a topic. For those with access, Internet searches using Web browsers can rapidly open a door to a vast storehouse of knowledge and information. Everyone and her brother seems to have a web page, whether for selling widgets, advertising a conference, or just telling you who they are and what they like to do. Wading through this virtual forest to find the gems can occupy hours, even days, with no guarantee that the information you find on the Web …

Exposing "Secrets Worth Knowing" In The Early Republic: Robert R. Henry's Papers As A Problem In Documentary Research, Robert Scott Davis Jr. Sep 1998

Exposing "Secrets Worth Knowing" In The Early Republic: Robert R. Henry's Papers As A Problem In Documentary Research, Robert Scott Davis Jr.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The "Journal of Archibald Clark" proved to be the papers of Robert R. Henry. They document Henry's 1820s political crusade in Georgia, New York, and Washington to replace Clark as the port master at St. Marys, Georgia. Henry meticulously recorded his thoughts and actions in what he eventually left as a memoir to his descendants. He even saw ammunition for his causes in documents critical of his efforts, which he copied without obvious prejudice. These papers provide an extremely rare documented case study of political activism of the period.

Churchill-Reves Correspondence : Review Of Winston Churchill And Emery Reves: Correspondence, 1937-1964, Ed. With An Introduction And Notes By Martin Gilbert., Roger Adelson

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Martin Gilbert, the official biographer of Winston Churchill and editor of his papers since 1968, has added another volume to his extraordinary documentation of the British statesman's life and career. In the mid-1990s, this historian at Merton College, Oxford, was knighted for completing the official biography, which was started by Churchill's son in the early 1960s. When Randolph Churchill died, the holder of the copyright asked Gilbert, then one of Randolph's research assistants, to continue the official biography along the lines that had already been established by the family and the British and U.S. publishers. The first two volumes, Youth, …

Future Mallarmé (Present Picasso): Portraiture And Self-Portraiture In Poetry And Art, Marshall C. Olds Jul 1998

Future Mallarmé (Present Picasso): Portraiture And Self-Portraiture In Poetry And Art, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Let us turn to what might at first seem the improbable encounter between Stéphane Mallarmé and Pablo Picasso. On the face of it, so much separates them: the one patiently mining a limited set of aesthetic notions, spending years perfecting some of his major works, the other incessantly exploring all possibilities of visual representation, moving through styles sometimes weekly, creating prodigiously in different media, living dozens of careers. In their separate ways, though, they both were extreme examples of creativity. Whether or not for that reason, Picasso turned toward (if not to) Mallarmé at two distinct points in his career: …
